I think we'd be playing with fire if they do 2 years and decide to make use of that time as an experiment with London full time. There would need to be a stipulation or clause in the contract then that prohibits this team from pursuing any long term desires of playing more than one home game in London per year over the next 30 years. Or, the 2 years they're not in Jacksonville they cannot play outside of the country more than the 2 trips that's going to be allowed starting this season. The "home" games need to be played in Gainesville or as much as I hate it, Orlando. "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? I'm not up to date on the numbers, but if true that seems like a relatively small amount over a 4 year period considering the stakes. Wouldn't 30+ local home games over the 4 years offset that amount a good bit? The team and the city haven't even begun negotiations and the team literally just announced today that there was a 4 year option to keep the home games in place. Why would they even bother if what you say has merit. Have the mayor and Shad Khan already issued statements on their preferences before the mayor is even sworn in?
Action News Jax is reporting the team will release renderings of the proposed stadium improvements at 10 am tomorrow (Wednesday).

I don't think they should put anything in writing essentially conceding a game to London for 30 years. If there is any negotiated concession to London, it should come with a much shorter timeline for winding down that commitment. For referenc the non-relocation clause in Buffalo's contract. It has some very interesting parts. Read @1 for instance.
The agreement directly states that the Bills shall not: (i) apply to the NFL for, or otherwise seek, approval to allow the Team to play any Games during the Non-Relocation Term anywhere other than the Stadium; (ii) relocate, transfer or otherwise move the Team (or attempt to relocate, transfer or otherwise move the Team…) to a location other than the Stadium; (iii) sell, assign or otherwise transfer the Team to any Person who, to the Bills’ knowledge, has an intention to relocate, transfer or otherwise move the Team during the Non-Relocation Term to a location other than the Stadium; (iv) (A) entertain any offer or proposal to relocate the Team to a location other than the Stadium, (B) solicit an offer or proposal from any Person to enter into discussions regarding moving the Team to a location other than the Stadium, © enter into negotiations or agreements with third parties concerning the relocation of the Team to a location other than the Stadium, or (D) otherwise attempt to cause the playing of Games at a location other than the Stadium. The Bills do, however, have the ability to explore relocation during the last five years of the lease (starting in 2050), so long as the relocation would not take place until after the conclusion of the agreement.

If a deal between the city and Shad is reached, are the odds Good that the NFL will approve it?

FYI, I have a copy of Buffalo's non-relocation agreement if anyone wants. The above was just a summary.

Why wouldn't they approve a ~ 1.5 billion dollar stadium and a 500 mil dollar adjacent sports district + lease extension for a team clearly on the rise in a rapidly growing market? Because we're obviously moving to London. Come on man, we know this. It's been in the works now for over two decades. They're finally pulling it off. If the team and the city both feel like they have the funds and the desire at $1.4 billion, why would they lose their appetite at $1.5 billion when the extra $0.1 billion avoids playing games in Orlando for 2 years?
That said, I really doubt it's anywhere near that much. Dolphin stadium was $500 million for the roof and the new bleachers and another $250 million for the other venues outside the stadium. That was 7 years ago. A comparable project in 2026 in Jacksonville should still be less than a billion.
My fellow southpaw Mark Brunell will probably always be my favorite Jaguar.

But, what is the amount of money the city would lose if the games are played somewhere else while the stadium is being renovated? Obviously, if the stadium was closed for a couple of years, they would lose rent on the stadium, in addition to the Ga/Fla game being played elsewhere. Plus all the other businesses that wouldn't make the usual game-day money while the team was out of town. So you'd have to subtract those amounts from the $100 million extra to do it without moving the team out. In addition to the fans not wanting to go to Gainesville to see the team play.

Not to mention our mayor-elect tweeted that she was committed to keeping games in Jax during renovation during her campaign/run-off election. I think they find a way to make that happen, but obviously there is a chance it swings the other way. Fingers crossed.
Problem I see is the Lot J replacement. Khan wants all the money from that. There is a reason he is only asking for 10-15% of that. He wants all ownership as it could bring in year round revenue while the stadium only gets him ~9 home games.
City needs to think about if they just want property and sales taxes or if they want profits. Then figure out if they think investing in it will be profitable without any infrastructure to get there without driving. Sent from my SM-T970 using Tapatalk
I can’t wait to see the initial renderings tomorrow.
Respect the game. Play with a sense of urgency.
1.) Take care of the ball. Win the turnover battle. 2.) It's all about 3rd down. Win on 3rd down to win the game. 3.) Playmakers make plays. The only reason that you put your uniform on is to make plays. In order to EARN your paycheck, you must make plays. Learn from the great collapse of 2023. |
