How about Neal Shipley and Carter Pitcairn's weekend?  Shipley was low amateur with his long-time golfing buddy Pitcairn as his caddy, made the cut, and on Sunday their playing partner was Tiger Woods. 

What a weekend!

Its hard to watch Tiger in his current state. If this is his ceiling moving forward, then its probably time to hang it up and assume his upcoming role as celebratory golfer. Lets be real: he's never going to even come close to achieving the many records of the mighty Jack Nicklaus.  Better to stop now than to tarnish his legacy.

The article (rightly, IMO) ranks Jack the best ever at the Majors. This was, and still is IMO, the measuring stick of greatness in golf. I would bet that a high percentage of past and present golfers and golf fans feel the same.

The article (rightly, IMO) ranks Jack the best ever at the Majors. This was, and still is IMO, the measuring stick of greatness in golf. I would bet that a high percentage of past and present golfers and golf fans feel the same.

Jacks’s greatness is not in doubt. What I questioned was your assertion that Tiger never even came close to achieving Nicklaus’s record. Not only has he come close, he’s surpassed some of Jack’s records.

I also don’t fully agree with majors wins as a definitive measuring stick of greatness. If so, Brooks Koepka should already be a Hall of Famer.

Assuming a typical par-4, with the pros making par, then the question would be, can we mere mortals 3-putt from 60 feet at Augusta National?  That's a valid question.   I think I might be able to 3-putt those greens if I had a month of practice on them.

He further emphasized how golf has become increasingly focused on money.

"Basically, it's the PGA Tour saying, "Here's a s**t load of money from us for not taking a s**t load of money from them." It's madness, man. Everything has just become about rewarding the top end of the game, and it's come about because of the divide. It is so damaging for our sport," Johnston added.

Adding to the statement, Andrew "Beef" Johnston also criticized the Signature Events of the PGA Tour. The circuit has introduced limited-field, no-cut events with enhanced purses in the series. This is similar to the LIV Golf events, which also feature limited-field, no-cut events, and increased purses.

"The Signature Events are limited field, no-cut events with these enormous purses. Sound familiar? The PGA Tour claimed they took away the cut to guarantee the big names would be there for the whole tournament but that's bullsh*t. How often does Rory miss a cut anyway? It's all about money and the sponsors, not the fans," Johnston added...

The following is the extent of any knowledge of or experience I have with golf. Nothing exciting but things are ramping up here thanks to the sport coming to town so I thought I'd share.

Folks here in the Pinehurst/Moore County, NC area are already feeling the pain of the US Open coming. Roads are being resurfaced, trees being pruned, landscaping being dialed in, stores and restaurants sprucing themselves up. This makes everything us locals need to get done take much longer and it will be even worse the week of the event. Now that the US Open is headquartered here it might even be crazier. 

We can always tell when the networks and rich folks are coming by all the busy work being done to look good on television and impress the elites. 

With Tiger Woods coming to town people who care about such things have their pants in a bunch. It's kind of funny. I honestly wouldn't even think about it if I passed him in a restaurant. He's just another guy IMO. I probably wouldn't even recognize him since we're not a locale that's known for celebrity watching. Except for when the Open is here. 

There is a local doctor who bought a very large field on a back country road around 2011 and turns it into a parking lot when the Open comes to town. A bus or two is charterted to take people from there to Pinehurst Village for all the golf events. We're pretty sure he paid his loan off in one fell swoop from the last Open in 2014 because that lot was packed every single day. If not, he will surely do so at this one. 

There are rabid golf fans but at least golf doesn't bring the hype that Formula 1 does. I can't imagine the area turning into Miami, Vegas or Austin when F1 comes to those cities. Thank goodness for the small things.

Golf is unique and uncancelable. 99% of its following play the game themselves, and it will always be that way.

Hes too young at the moment. But he will be a HOFer. If not, then they need to throw out Nick Price, Vijay, Payne Stewart, Ernie Els, Byron Nelson, Seve and a whole bunch of others who are currently at 5 majors or below.
