NGAKOUE: Yay or Nay?

#1

This has been tossed around a lot, so here's a thread for it.

Yannick is a free agent. A slice of the fanbase thinks he's not a good guy, or a bad teammate or something because he wanted out of a bad situation here and had a chip on his shoulder about money.

Outside of a ill-advised twitter feud with Tony K, he really did nothing wrong. All reports were that he worked hard and was a good teammate.

He's not a perfect pass rush candidate because he'd be used more situationally than some guys given his run defense issues.

For those that go on about him not sticking with a team for 3 years, here's a breakdown on that I posted in another thread:

I've hashed this out a few times for the resident nonsensical Ngakoue-haturz club over the past year or two.

I think it's simple.

Teams constantly manage cap and positional roster expense.
Yan is not an every down pass rusher. So he can become a luxury to teams with roster management inflexibility.
So when a team finds an opportunity to draft a prospect who will be cheaper and play every down - they will replace him. They may also seek a more affordable situation in free agency.

MOST IMPORTANTLY HOWEVER:
There are also the clear situations of coaching changes and/or scheme fits at various stops.

2020 vikings brought in Ngakoue because they lost Danielle Hunter to a neck injury for a whole season. They also had a struggling and under fire Mike Zimmer apparently at odds with a "threatening to retire" Gary Kubiak about what scheme to run defensively. Hunter came back and they drafted a 3rd round DE as well, so Ngakoue was out.
2021 Vikes had a new DC.

2020/21 Ravens - Ravens moved a third rounder picked in 2020 into the lineup for 2021 and selected a DE in the first round. Clearly looking to man the spot affordably.

2022 Raiders - They went from a Gus Bradley 4-3 to a Patrick Graham 3-4. Bradley clearly was part of bringing Ngakoue in as he had him as a rookie in Jax. Bradley was out, Ngakoue was replaced as well.

2022 colts - Well lookie here, who was the coordinator? Bingo, Gus Bradley. Now, do I really need to break down the debacle of the colts 2022 season and explain any roster fallout as a result of that regime change?

Anyway, it may be weird to turn into to a one year per team journeyman, and you may be tempted to say he followed Bradley around the past two years, but he also gave Gus Bradley 19.5 sacks over the past two years, and the team situations laid out above explain roster changes on defense that may otherwise not occur.

I did not like how Ngakoue forced his way out. Really came off as a bad attitude guy. On the other hand, for the right price, he could be a situational pass rusher that we could use.

At the right price? Yes. He would also have to understand his role. He's a situational pass rusher/ pass rush specialist. He's not going to start and he's going to have to take less money than what he is asking for. Rumor is he wants to start and is asking for to much money. Pretty much the same issue last time he was here lol

I think he was corrupted by Ramsey and Fowler while he was here. I'd bring him back, as others have mentioned, at the right price. He's recently outperformed what we currently have in place, and for multiple teams/coaches.

I agree with that.  It depends on the price.

This line in particular bears noting - Does Yan fit in a 3-4? Would we be paying him to play a miscast role, or require modifications to the scheme to fit his talent?

There's no denying the dude is productive. I wouldn't be looking to punch the GM in the face if he does sign him for a second tour, but I do have reservations.

I'd have much rather we spent a little bit of our darft capital (especially late) on another guy or two that may have similar traits (great at pass rush, more liability in run D), but that ship has sailed.

Boils down to price tag. I still like Clark and Houston a little more.

All 3 including our lost boy should be one year deals and on our terms.

We still need a veteran pass rusher, so I say yay.

I don't have a problem with him as a player or as a person, but I suspect his right price is still too rich for our cap situation.
If we are going to go all the way to the edge of the cap to pick up one of these remaining free agents, I would rather use those last dollars on O line.

I voted "yes" if the price is right. Their failure to find an answer to their terrible pass rush last season was not addressed in the draft unless one considers an undersized 5th round pick the answer to their problems. I'd love it if Abdullah becomes a clone of Elvis Dumervill or even Reddick, but the odds are against it. Don't care whether they sign Yan, Floyd, Houston or another veteran pass rusher who still has something "left in the tank."

Odds are no, for this to happen the stars need to align.

Sometime during training camp the Jags will need to identify the NEED. They have already said they are waiting to evaluate their needs during that time.
The Jags need to confident there are no health issues.
Our Defensive coordinator will need to assure he can scheme around Ngakque's weakness against the run. (reason he is available)
The "hachet" must be buried between the Jags and Ngakque with assurances no matter what happens this will not occur again.
Ngakque is 28, he would need to accept a 1 year deal much like Arden Key. (4 million) He is coming off a 2 year 26 mill contract.

I've seen Yannick out at the club a few times. He's openly homophobic. I don't believe he will sign here with Maxen in the building.

Is he? I wouldn't be surprised. Wasn't he a teammate to some dude with the Raiders who came out as gay?

It's a Ngay from me, sorry. Now that Smoot is back all spare funds must be dedicated to pass blocking.
