Found this to be an interesting article. Spoke on historical issues with childcare, schooling, etc.

I'm not a parent so I have no clue what parents have to deal with on this subject but I can tell you it's a two-fold problem as demonstrated by the following from the article;

And in a landscape shaped by scarcity and competition, parents have grown reluctant to let their children find their own forms of enrichment, lest someone report them to Child Protective Services. A recent paper in the Journal of Pediatrics found that a primary cause of the rise in mental-health disorders was "a decline over decades in opportunities for children and teens to play, roam, and engage in other activities independent of direct oversight and control by adults." We not only have no one to take care of our children — but also do not afford them the opportunity to learn how to take care of themselves.

Helicopter parents are ruining their kids by not allowing them to go and do what kids do. My mom rarely knew where I was specifically. I was somewhere on our property but she didn't have eyeballs on me all the time. Or I was at the library, a friend's house, or riding my bike around. She had a general idea of my whereabouts. I had to be home by a certain time or else. 

These days parents are spending tens of thousands of dollars on their houses to have open floor plans so they can see their kids at all times. They hover and smother their kids who end up having no self identity or personality. They probably lack intestinal fortitude. 

Then you have the kids who grow up in single parent homes who have no one to look after them. They are susceptible to being taken advantage of by gangs or predators. 

It's a terrible thing and there's no easy answer.

I’ve watched shows like this plenty and still have never heard it. Most people just want bigger kitchens and their kids playroom is in the basement. Out of eye sight.

I do agree there are helicopter parents but I just disagree with the notion that this generation wants open floor plans to watch their kids more. Maybe some parents but those are very minimal.

It's not very often that I've heard it, usually it's just an innocuous statement like "it will also help us keep an eye on the kids" so more an added bonus.

I'm not one to speak though I'm a helicopter parent out of necessity

You must not watch home renovation shows. Even the homeowners on This Old House want open floor plans to be able to see their kids from the kitchen or wherever. 

I've had friends with young kids get their homes renovated or their buying a new house and they also wanted the open plan for the same reason.

That series was hard to watch and stomach. I grew up in the 90's watching a lot of them and when they started going off the rails as I grew up on them I always figured they were just spoiled, entitled brats that had let a little bit of fortune and fame get to their heads. 

Not realizing that these kids were working like full time adults, being pressured by [BLEEP] parents, [BLEEP] talent agencies and then having to finish school while dealing with a bunch of sick [BLEEP] with the casting couch. 

Start to feel really sorry now for some of them that are mentally off the rails. Amanda in particular. She was always funny as a kid. She always lit up the screen on weekends and had really fun characters. It was sad to see the light in her eyes die over the years. 

Hollywood is a cesspool. Good on Maher for calling out the double standards and the absurdity of being woke and dragging the left down with them.
