What do you think of Cam Newton as a QB? He just signed a new contract extension for $103.8 million for 5 years. I know it's only $60 million guaranteed, but still. Is Cam Newton really worth over $20 million a year?
I read that his record as a starter is 30-31-1.
Can you win in the playoffs with Cam Newton as your QB or is that just the going rate for starting QBs who were drafted high and you feel that you have to resign them because what else is out there?
Kinda like when Garrard got paid. Didn't really set in how big of mistake it was until a year after the fact. They will feel the same in Carolina after this year more than likely.
That's just where QB contracts are going now. Is Newton better than Dalton, Kaepernick, and Tannehill? I would venture to say so. He deserves to be paid in their vicinity as well.
Tannehill just got a similar deal, and at this point I would take Cam Newton over him any day.
I think Newton is a good player. He has potential to be great but the Carolina front office has done him no favors. Surrounding him with aging, overpaid running backs, mediocre receivers and a bad offensive line.

That is the going rate for capable starting QB's in the league. They are not easy to find. That is why guys like Tannehill, Dalton and Newton are getting the money they are getting.
His receivers are horrible. Crazy they wouldn't surround him with more talent at the receiver position.
Newton is, I believe a very good QB. They haven't surrounded him with anything around him though to help.
edit: jt beat me to it.

And their first two picks this year, Shaq Thompson and Devin Funchess, were head scratchers.
Now cue the delusional Seattle fans who think they shouldn't pay Russel Wilson...
But....But....Butt it's to much fun floating down DeNile.

Agreed. They're basically setting the floor for guys like Luck or Wilson when their contract talks come up.

They're idiots if they take that position.

You'd be surprised. I remember reading the comments section on a Yahoo story and all the Seattle fans were convinced they could win another SB with just their defense and running game.
Wilsons agent is salivating
I don't think they should pay Wilson 25m+ a year. I think he should get a 20 a year deal, maybe 21 just for he makes more than the Daltons and Newtons of the world.
Wilson without that defense would be cut in a heartbeat after one miserable season at Newton numbers.

Well then who do they want as their QB?
Wilson has taken them to the Super Bowl in 2 of his 3 years in the league, won one of them and could very well be 2-0 in Super Bowls, except for that head-scratching goal line interception.
He has made the playoffs all 3 years in the league and is 6-2 in the playoffs and 36-12 in the regular season.
Yes, I know they have a great defense, but Wilson makes more plays then most people think.
His numbers might not jump out at you, but he wins games as a QB and that's what you want as a team, to win games.
He is way underpaid right now on his rookie deal and I do wonder what kind of deal he will sign when that time comes, which is soon.
One problem about paying him a whole lot of money is that there will be much less money for everyone else who wants to get paid also, which will lead to some very good players leaving and getting their money from another team.

What if he wants more? Let him walk? Never happening. The reality is Russel Wilson isn't going anywhere, and they are going to have to pay him at some point. I don't care how good he is, when you are a NFL QB with 2 superbowl appearances with 1 win and his track record in only 3 years your argument is REAL strong for getting paid. Then add to that the bargain price they got for all of that. In fact, look at what he's accomplished vs. the other QBs who are getting paid. You can argue defense, running game and salary cap all day, but in the end the stupidity of screwing up having a franchise quarterback while you're in win-now mode and when you have nothing remotely close to replace him trumps all other stupidity they could possibly accomplish by overpaying him.

Maybe. Maybe not. People used to say similar stuff about Roethlisberger. But when you get to two consecutive superbowls it isn't broke and there is no fix. What are they going to do, draft another 3rd round quarterback next year because they don't value the QB position?
