Quote:Baffles me people want to trade away what talent we might have, it's not like where going into a rebuild, where coming out of a rebuild where supposed to be keeping talent at this point!
You would think.  Unfortunately, some folks are constantly looking for ways to trade away anything of value.

How valuable is a player who possibly won't make the team due to a log jam at the position?

If the player is capable of putting up stats when he's on the field, plenty to this team.  In trade?  Very little.

There's no log jam at any particular position.  We're not a team that's drowning in depth anywhere, even at LEO.

I have to disagree with you there. Branch, Clemons, DFJ, Ryan Davis, and Chris Smith sure looks like a log jam to me.

You honestly think we carry 5 LEO's on the opening day roster? I surely don't.

Not one of them is going to command anything of significant value in trade. At the end of the day, if we don't carry 5, it's because we've released the weakest link.  Trading talent that can be productive doesn't help your team.  Cutting the weakest player at a position does.

Even a 7th round pick would represent significant value vs outright releasing the player.

We've been on the other end of the spectrum before. We traded a 6th round draft pick for Dwight Lowery from the Jets due to them having a log jam in the secondary. He would've been released but to avoid having to bid for his services on the open market we gave up a pick instead. I don't see why the same couldn't be applied to a semi-productive pass rusher. If Caldwell likes the upside of Davis and Smith instead he could opt to do just that.
At the DE/Leo position, there are 5 players now, Fowler, Clemons, Branch, Davis, and Smith.  The weakest player is probably Smith, and I don't see Caldwell keeping 5.  Smith had 3 sacks last year in limited snaps, which may give him some value in a trade scenario.  Why would you just cut him when you could potentially receive value?  Teams at the back end of the waiver wire order, in need of depth, may be candidates.  However, I would not trade him or any Leo until you can sort out the best 4 keepers in camp.

Smith would probably be considered more valuable to the team considering he's entering the 2nd year of his rookie contract and the fact that he was able to produce even with the least number of snaps in the rotation. He's the ideal candidate to keep around for developmental purposes.

As to the bolded, I couldn't have said it better myself.

I simply don't think the team is going to trade away a player who they feel can provide value on the field, and the guy(s) released wouldn't garner much in trade if other teams anticipate they'll hit the street.  The reason even teams on the back end of the waiver wire would more than likely wait is because you're still talking about a team that's won how many games in the last 2 years?  Any talent being cut is going to be considered marginal.
By the time they determine who is at the bottom of the depth chat, roster cuts will be due. No one is interested in trading for those players.
Mike Thomas and Blaine Gabbert come to quick mind as players that were going to be cut, and received trade compensation.  FBT....assume for the moment that the 5 Leos all are determined to be productive or have value on the field.  Do you think they'll keep all 5 players?

Gabbert is a QB and Mike Thomas was traded midseason.

So the position and timing are completely different from trading someone before they are given a chance to determine the pecking order during camp.

If some youg player develops and displaces one of our vets midseason and another team has a pressing midseason need, then yeah, a trade may happen.
Memory isn't great anymore....thanks and yes, Thomas was a mid-season trade.

You lost me at "Gabbert is a QB"....

Well he plays one on TV

I have to admit, he's kinda fun to watch playing for someone else.

It lacks that sense of dread.

Kinda like watching someone wind a jack-in-the-box.  You know at some point all the praise in preseason is going to explode in their face.  It's like Jacksonville never happened.
I'll have to agree... Watching him pay for someone else does take away that feeling of misery we experienced when he was here and replaces it with laughter.   Well done, Dave... Well done.....

Or like watching the train wreck build for that guy who swoops in on your crazy ex girlfriend, "It wasn't you baby, it was him. You're wonderful."
