Quote:Derek Cox was always overrated by this board and could never pass the eye test. He wasnt nearly as competive or physical as McCray has been. McCray gets out there and competes, Derek Cox would get beat and then surprise you by picking pass off every now and then. McCray just plays a much different style then Cox, and I dont think its fair to compare a guy who is going out there and fighting with a guy who didnt put near the same effort into competing.
Derek Cox was considered elite on this board for some odd reason.
The only elite CB that would give up multiple 200+ yard games a season.

Don't get me started on Derek Cox.
I wasted 2 years of my life on this board arguing the fact that this dude was overrated by Jag fans.
2nd team All Colonial Athletic Association
I think Cox had like one really really good game as a rookie, which caused a lot of fans, including myself, to jump on his bandwagon.
That combined with the fact that we had few really good players, Smith traded picks for him, we just wanted him to be worth it lol

Cox was bad. I would assume because we traded up for him and drafted him in the third, there was much expectation ( as expected). The truth is, we don't know who good he could of been. He was never healthy. I don't think he has ever played 16 regular season games and with the Jags his injuries would just pile up. I would assume some of that had to come into play with him not playing well. But i agree, he was way over hyped and just never panned out.
Denard is one of the boldest moves for Dave to work out, so I understand that pick. Not far behind are Telvin and McCray. Linder and Bowanko obviously offer great value. Robinson and Lee were bold back to back choices that have room to grow with Bortles.
Worst move is definitely Joeckel because of his high draft pick and missed time/inconsistency. Is he a bust? Right now sentiment is high for yes but he has time to become an key member on the line. Cyprien has under performed too but he has time too.

LOL... wut?!?!
If there's anyone who is universally overrated by the board, it's McCray. He's not a bad player, but neither was Cox (Cox problem is that he couldn't stay healthy, like Durant.)

McCray is not overrated. He was one of our best players defensively last year and we found him in the 7th. From his first year to his second, he has improved significantly. He has become a starting caliber player and he has not even hit his ceiling. Was he Richard Sherman? No, but the guy can cover, tackle and best of all, stay healthy. Cant say the same for Cox. Cox struggled in almost every aspect of the game. But i blame a lot of that on his injuries. Its a shame because i think he had a chance to be good, but we never saw that. He was injured all the time.
However, Demetrius McCray has already shown way more than Cox ever did. He at the very least is a solid number 2 corner.

I almost feel bad for him after reading that...
Best is Telvin smith
Worst is Ace Sanders
Joeckel is undoubtedly the worst. It was a bad pick at the time, and he has vastly underperformed. But DRob as the best? Ehh... I'm not so sure. I would lean towards someone like Telvin Smith, McCray, Linder, or maybe even Allen Robinson.

That's overstating it a bit, which illustrates my opinion. Yes, he's well outplayed his 7th round status. Yes, he's a good player. But he's got zero playmaking ability. And no, he hasn't shown "way more" than Cox. Cox looked special at times when healthy. He showed flashes (albeit very few and far between) of greatness. OTOH, McCray has never looked like a special player. Colvin has looked like a better, more special player in much less playing time.
Inaccurate. Even though I am from Canada and support the score.
Best: Telvin
Worst: Technically you could say Joeckel but he was injured for year so it's not entirely set in stone with him. Only because he was picked so high. You could put either Gratz or Ace sanders instead.

Cox had a few good games in 2011, between his injuries, with the Ravens game being his best. I'd say McCray looked special covering Dez Bryant, just to pick one game, and I don't remember McCray having a bad game last year.
I was skeptical of the praise for McCray after the 2013 season. In 2014 he made me a believer. He was rated highly by PFF, and while their ratings at some positions are questionable (LB and S being the worst), it's usually because they can only guess at assignments. With CB it's pretty easy to figure out the assignments.
McCray or Telvin Smith for best Caldwell pick so far. Joeckel is the worst so far, with Cyprien and Sanders in contention. Of course this could all change after this season, and I hope it does for Joeckel.
Ultimately, Bortles could easily end up as either the best or the worst.
Quote:For me....
Best pick: (tie)
Demetrius McCray (7th round, pick 210)- quickly developing into a top tier CB.
Telvin Smith (5th round, pick 144)- showing ability to be an impact player.
Worst:
Luke Joeckel (1st round, pick 2)- has vastly under-performed draft position to date.
McCray sure has turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Great move getting two 7th round CBs figuring one or the other would pan out.
As for Luke I still have plenty of hope, but we are talking about a second overall pick. We should be going into this year thinking he's a shoe-in for the Pro Bowl, but instead we're wondering if he'll even hang onto his starting position. I tell you what... the Eagles sure made out getting Lane Johnson. If it wasn't for him having to start the season with a suspension, I wonder if he'd have been a candidate for the Jaguars.
If Marquis Lee doesn't get better in a hurry, he might deserve the worst overall pick award. At least Ace was a 4th round pick. Lee was taken early in the second round where there's always plenty of talent to choose from. I'd also say the jury is still out on Cyprien and Gratz taken in the 2nd and 3rd rounds respectively.
As for best overall pick, I'll have to rank my top several...
1. Telvin Smith - 5th round
2. Demetrius McCray - 7th round
3. Aaron Colvin - 4th round
4. Allen Robinson - 2nd round
5. Brandon Linder - 3rd round

6. Blake Bortles - 1st round <--I do think he has what it takes to win a Super Bowl with good talent surrounding him, but I see him as a somewhat obvious need pick, and I fear he'll end up on IR one day from accidentally biting off his tongue.
7. Luke Bowanko - 6th round
8. Denard Robinson - 5th round
<--hopefully he learns to block this offseason
If you count undrafted players, you could put Allen Hurns in there right near the top.
Quote:DRob has the following Career stats (2 years):
648 Rushing Yards
124 Receiving Yards
88 Return Yards
By Comparison -- when we drafted Cyprien at the beginning of round 2 .... Le'Veon Bell (mid 2nd round) has the following:
2,221 Rushing Yards
1,253 Receiving Yards
I think people tend to overstate DRod's past performance and perhaps future value to this team.
I feel the same way Denard has done okay as a late round contributor on a bad team and he's still not what I think of as a great pick. Telvin smith is deffinitely better right now.

I think he had a pick from Maning back when he was a rookie and it made him seem better than he was.

I don't remember that being the case. I remember him being called "good." Never remember anyone labeling him "elite" and I was involved in many of those debates.

He actually had about 6 or 7 good games over his first two years. I think Derek Cox was a talented athlete who wasn't willing to put in the work it took to remain competitive on the NFL level. The injuries didn't help either. He didn't seem to get along well with coaches either. Seemed like his own worst enemy. Just my opinion.
I'm just glad we can talk about McCray, Davon House and Colvin these days instead of Cox.
