Quote:Chargers considering a run at Marcus Mariota?
Marcus Mariota | CLG
(March 17, 2015 6:42 PM EDT)
According to the Union-Tribune San Diego, there's been league-wide speculation that the Chargers "could be serious" about going after Oregon QB Marcus Mariota.
Reporter Kevin Acee's report cites "numerous people in and around the league." The Bolts have scheduled a private workout with Mariota next month. It's unlikely Mariota would fall to the Chargers at No. 17, so a trade up would likely be necessary to secure his services. Per Acee, the speculation comes as Philip Rivers' Chargers future is up in the air. Rivers intends to play out the final year of his deal without an extension, while GM Tom Telesco wouldn't offer a blanket denial that Rivers could eventually be traded.

For those that don't know, Kevin Acee is one of the most tied-in team beat writers around the league. If true then we have yet another entrant in the Mariota derby.
The Redskins or Jets come to mind as a potential trade partner with the Chargers if a two way trade takes place.
Mariota met with the Bucs yesterday. If the interview with Winston didnt go so well or the have questions about the risk of drafting Winston, Mariota could be the pick at 1

Either way we will be in a good position come draft day. I just hope one of the QBs are on the board when we pick and get a nice trade back offer.

The Jets are who teams need to jump over for Marcus Mariota.

A trade of this magnitude involving Philip Rivers AND Marcus Mariota wouldn't happen prior to the point that it's known Mariota is available in the draft. Whether Mariota is taken before pick # 6 remains to be seen.

I'll highlight why the trade would make the most sense for both the tacks and the Chargers.
Quote:Now that quarterback Philip Rivers has told Kevin Acee of U-T San Diego that the fourth pick in the 2004 draft won’t sign a new contract before his current one expires after the 2015 season and may not sign a new contract at all (especially if the team moves to L.A.), the Chargers have to consider their options. With G.M. Tom Telesco declining (per Acee) to rule out a trade, the most obvious outcome would be Rivers to Tennessee for the second overall pick in the draft, and Mariota.
When the Rivers news emerged late Tuesday, it didn’t generate much buzz. Perhaps that’s because franchise quarterbacks rarely change teams, except when they’re seriously injured (Drew Brees and Peyton Manning) or when they’ve been nudged into retirement and later decide to come back (Brett Favre). For others, talk of a franchise quarterback leaving is always just talk, a prelude to a new contract being signed.
Still, the evidence in this case makes it impossible to rule out a trade. The Titans, burned by reaching four years ago for Jake Locker, may be skittish about taking Mariota. Coach Ken Whisenhunt, burned by trading for Kevin Kolb four years ago with the Cardinals, may be more interested in getting a veteran that Whisenhunt has worked with. In 2013, Whisenhunt worked with Rivers as San Diego’s offensive coordinator.

If something were to happen I would expect it to be closer to the draft. This may also explain why Chip Kelly acquired a veteran QB so he could be used as a bargaining chip with the tacks as well.
The Chargers have been a 8-8/9-7 team with Rivers and a better supporting cast than what Tennessee has.

Who ever said the reason Chip Kelly wanted Sam Bradford was to use him in a trade for Marcus Mariota? So far I have only seen that suggested here on the board, not reported as a fact.
The only time I know about a team getting a player just to trade him is when the Chargers picked Eli Manning, the Giants picked Philip Rivers, and the teams swapped quarterbacks. When has a veteran been used for trade bait like that?

It's not just speculation from this board. This was said by Mike Freeman today:
Quote:"Eagles Still in Play for Mariota?
I continue to hear it. Not rumors. People who would know are saying Chip Kelly is still in the mix to try to get Marcus Mariota.
I still cannot find anyone in the NFL who believes Kelly is satisfied with Sam Bradford. I still cannot find anyone in the NFL who believes Kelly when he says he will not make a play for Mariota. Not a single person. I'm sure there are people who do believe Kelly. I just can't find them."

I never heard of this Mike Freeman guy. That quote looks 100% like a fan stating an opinion. Show me a quote that cannot be interpreted as anything but a proven fact.

Freeman used to be here in Jax, worked for CBS and I believe is with NFL.com now. He's legit and usually pretty reserved (meaning he doesn't throw stuff out there hoping it will stick)

You must be new to town. Freeman was one of the better T-U Jags writers, and tended to be pretty conservative when it came to what he wrote. He was pretty meticulous about making sure he was publishing something that he felt was the truth or close to it, not something that was little more than wild speculation or a tip from the hot dog vendor in section 135.
I wouldn't be shocked at all to see the Eagles flip Bradford to the Browns for 19 (or Bradford and, say, a third-round pick for twelve), then package those picks for a move high into the top ten to grab Mariota.
I'm really starting to see this as a no-lose draft for the Jaguars. Either the Titans trade out with someone who wants Mariota/take Mariota themselves and Leonard Williams is sitting there for us, or the Titans take Leonard Williams and we get to scoop up some extra selections by sliding back and letting someone have Mariota.
I'm of the opinion (and this may not be a popular one) that there are three elite players in this draft: Winston, Mariota, Williams. In the Jaguars' case, if Williams is gone, pick three might as well be pick twelve because of the glut of players in there that all feel pretty similar in terms of grade.

I never got the Times-Union. The only times I was ever in Duval County were the three days I went to Jaguars home games. So I am not new to town; I am out of town.
Did you really think Gainesville was five minutes away from Jacksonville?
I'm not saying that I think it's going to happen or anything like that, but if the Chargers called you and wanted to move up to 3, what would you accept as compensation?

Did you really think Mike Freeman was merely some "fan?"
You're certainly in no position to be calling out other people for making assumptions.

thats a big drop. would need to be substantial and i wouldnt want rivers as part of the deal. this might be somewhere we could see a 3 team trade. someone like the titans could get rivers and we would get an extra 2nd round pick from them on top of something like a 1st, 2nd, and 4th from san diego.
pick 17 is really around the area where the jaguars could take mckinney and not be reaching. i really want to see that guy in teal and that could also give us the ammo to get shane ray if he slips. the other second could be used for a guy like prewitt.
so we could, under the right scenario, parlay pick 3 into
bernardrick mckinney
shane ray
and
cody prewitt

Nothing less than next year's first round pick for dropping out of the top 10.

Even if the Chargers were willing to make this trade, I don't think that the Chargers # 1 in 2015 and # 1 in 2016 would be enough to satisfy the Jaguars. The Chargers probably would have to add a 2nd Round pick in the trade, with the possibility they would get back a Day 3 pick.
I would hate this deal if it happened.

I would expect any deal for Marcus Mariota to include the 2015 second round pick no matter who trades up. Not sure how a third day pick would be included in the deal.
