Haha exactly
Quote:lol, no

ODrick had 1 sack... go lol somewhere else

I wonder if the front office even tried to renegotiate a smaller salary instead of just outright cutting Bryant?

Odrick is the better player, but there is no such thing as having too much depth or experience.
Sad but I doubt he'll be the only suprise released before the start of the season.

I liked having Red Bryant there for depth and in case of injuries (which WILL happen)
You do realize that there's a pretty good chance he doesn't make a roster this year, in which case he would be there in case of injury, right?

Quote:That is wasted money that could have brought other players in.  Example.  We spend $4 million less than we have to according to that 89%.  We are forced to pay it to the players on the roster as a bonus.  We could have brought in a $4 million player and cut the 53rd man on the roster.....which is a more prudent way to spend the money?  That's why you MUST hit the 89%, otherwise you are using it incredibly unwisely.
At some point, the numbers game and respect for the player become considerations. The team is not going to keep three expensive players at one position, so the old guy who was envisioned as a stopgap anyway loses the numbers game. By releasing him now instead of waiting until training camp, they're showing respect in enabling him to go out and get a new job early, rather than dumping him at a time when it would be difficult to do so.

I don't really need an explanation for why it happened.  I'm smart enough to figure it out on my own.  That doesn't mean I have to agree with it.

Red Bryant was one of our better run stoppers last year.  But now that we cut him, "OH HE BAD"

And your complaint about Odrick is that he only had one sack. Can't have it both ways.

Butt hurt
This is starting to make me think Williams may be availble in the draft. Titans may trade with the eagles and Williams falls to us.

Caldwell has an uncanny ability to predict certain situations for the future e.g. this free agent period. This points me to that idea.

I never said Red Bryant was an all-star, which everybody seems to think of Odrick now that he got paid.  They had similar production.  I go by what I see on the field, not by what other people tell me.

Red Bryant was stout against the run, ODrick got pushed around by Luke Joeckel (that was my main complaint), and you couple that with his poor production... He's overrated.  However, I would have liked to keep both guys on the roster to be run stoppers.  Now we have one less run stopper and if ODrick gets injured, what's plan B?  Alualu.  God help us.

The team had 12 DL's on the roster prior to the move and 11 of them were veterans with at least a couple years of experience. Lots of bodies. Only so many spaces. No dead money, which is fantastic. At least this gives Big Red some time to find another job. Classy guy and he can still play. I wish him the best.

Odrick averaged 5 sacks a season prior to last season...

In our defense scheme, he'll have more opportunities probably...

He's not a pass rush specialist. If he's able to get 5+ sacks and play the run well while splitting time between filling in for Marks (until he's back to 100%), and playing some 5-tech, that's a productive season.

Exactly, and likely more than Red would have offered.

Caldwell has said as much, his versatility - an ability to play 3 spots on the Dline - is what shines the most. He wasn't asked to rush the passer, so he doesn't have a lot of sacks, but can get there in the right scheme.

He's also much younger in football years.
I would not be surprised to see Clemons go if we get a stud LEO (Hardy or high draft pick)

I would not be surprised to see Ziggy Hood go either if we draft Williams.

But we haven't been forced into a "either or" situation.  Red Bryant and ODrick could have been on the field at the same time in short yardage situations.

They could have, I suppose...

Caldwell feels if that is the package, he'll get the same results as having AluAlu and Odrick on at the same time...

Gotta let go of the older guys... they've done their part in the rebuild...

$500k bonus due on Sunday.  The team should have just paid that out because they've got money to spend even if they knew he wasn't part of the long-term plan?  Do you think it might be remotely possible that the team has a plan here, and he simply doesn't fit what they want moving forward?  You are acting like we've lost a critical component to the defense here, and I'm not seeing it.  He was a role player.
It could be a situation where the team released him knowing that it would avoid having to pay out the bonus, and that there is a possibility that if things don't go the way they want with free agency or the draft, they could bring him back.  I'm doubtful he'll be a hot commodity in free agency.

No I made it clear I liked him as a run stopper (role player). He wasn't critical but an asset nonetheless.

Everybody has a plan. Doesn't mean I have to agree with it.

If they plan on resigning him after the draft I'll be happy about it. Until then, not happy.
