Quote:Looks like we got a swing and a miss with AluAlu coming back.
Alualu is a solid player...

people should get over the fact that a previous GM picked him in the top 10

How's his new contract look? 2 years and chump change? I think we can't make any splashes until free agency actually begins.

Letting a player like Alualu walk away in free agency wouldn't be a hit any more than signing a depth player to a depth contract is a miss.
It shouldn't go without saying, the Detroit Lions invested three first rounders (two in the top five) to build their defensive line over several years.  In two years Dave Caldwell used second tier free agency.  Last year with Suh, Ansah Fairly etc. Detroit had 42 sacks with an offense that gave them the lead late in games.  Last year the Jags had 45 sacks with an offense that not only didn't take the lead, but was near the top of the league in three and outs.  The Moneyball analogy is over used but in this case, don't focus on the emotional tingle you get hearing a certain players name, look at the production on the field.  In that vein, Suh while a dominant player isn't going to bring the dividends to justify, highest non quarterback in the history of history money, on this team.

Nah, I wouldn't get too down about AluAlu. Every team needs depth and Tyson is that if nothing else. He's bound to be better than if we just went out on the street there in front of the stadium and started bringing guys in. The disappointment in Tyson is that he was a top ten pick and he never lived up to it; still... we could certainly do worse I think.
Agree....he was drafted too high....that's not his fault.

some of the other guys just might inspire him this year.

Suh is very rare exception of a layer that hits FA that will actually make an impact, but the bidding war on him is going to make him very undesirable. I think the Lions were more than happy to get rid of him. I feel like they had more than enough methods of keeping him. I think the team who signs him will ultimately regret it.

I don't really care how much players get paid, however the contract that Suh is going to get this week is a cap killer and are the type of FA mistakes teams make every year. It's over the top and the football gods do not tolerate the sort of behavior and will likely punish the franchise that offends.
Quote:So what "top ten players" are available? Suh, Julius Thomas, McCourty?

Yes. Add Bulaga who was PFF's 3rd rated RT last year (although he has an injury history). At this point in time it looks like the Jags are the favorites to sign Thomas, and Bulaga is in play. Getting two is about the most we can expect, although the Jags have the cap room to sign all four.

I'm rather disappointed to hear that Caldwell is going after Murray. Murray was the #1 RB last year, but the number of carries and receptions (many of which are essentially just long handoffs) most likely destroyed him for the future. Murray's a top ten player who IMO would be a mistake to sign.

Signing Alualu instead of going after Suh was also a disappointment. "One of these things is not like the other."

Instead of?

Yeah, I am sure the Jags lost all interest in Suh once the ink dried on that 2 year deal for Alualu.

Seriously. I'm giddy they didn't sign Suh if the numbers are correct.
