Today, a local radio station in New Orleans reported that the Saints are shopping Strong Side OLB,
Junior Gallette
62' 258 Lbs
27 Yrs old on March 27th, 2015
Gallette was recently in the news due to some domestic violence charge which has been subsequently been dismissed by the local police due to a lack of evidence
Junior Gallette is of interest because he had 10 sacks in 2014, and 12 sacks in 2013.
He is under contract through 2018 (4 years) and has a very favorable contract except for the 2015 season.
His 2015 salary is 12.5 Mil
His 2016 salary is 5.8 Mil
His 2017 salary is 6.5 Mil
His 2018 salary is 8.2 Mil
It should be noted that the Saints are 22 Mil OVER the 2015 Cap and the loss of Gallette would go along way to balancing the books.
The Saints want to trade him but due to their salary cap situation they may have to release him.
Given his contract and the Jags need for an Otto LB, Gallette could be an attractive option.
The Jags might be able to trade for him for a 4th or 5th Rd pick.
I think this is a player that can help the Jags.
Your thoughts?
Henne would not like it
^ you win the interwebz today
ehhh, someone that gets taken down by our backup Qb?Either that or we got henne at the wrong position.

I freaking love this lol
The Saints are clearly desperate to clear cap so I might wait it out to see if they will just outright release him and save us a draft pick.
Would the Saints take a Rd 7 pick in lieu of cutting the guy?
His 2015 salary at 12.5 Mil is high, but his other years are reasonable and we are talking about 22 sacks in the past two years.
Think Jerry Hughes, but plays the SLB (Otto) for the Saints.
The Saints are looking to reduce their cap hit and so this is a limited time offer.
On Tuesday the Saints will be under the cap and either Gallette is cut or has had his contract reworked.

What are you opinions of him as a player. Would he be a significant upgrade? It sounds like it from the number of sacks he's compiled. It would allow us more freedom in the draft of not having to sign a LB early. If we can move JT to middle linebacker, Telvin on the week side and Galette on the strong/otto, would appear to sound pretty promising. Young, strong group. I like JT and think he'll be good as a Poz replacement.
The saints in general are a team to keep an eye on. With their money in such a bad place who knows what kind of talent gets out of there.

No way I am trading for that salary
Honestly, I do not know a lot about him as a player. I try to keep track of players but I am not a big Fantasy Football guy.
I just try to keep my eye out for players that could help the Jags and positionally Gallette mans the SLB OLB position.
I do not know enough of the Saints defensive scheme to know if he is a good fit for the Otto LB spot, but from afar he appears to be someone who might.
I broach these topics to stimulate conversation, not to show off myself as some sort of authority.

Its not like we don't have the money. Sign him and then re-work it to a team friendly deal
Before you comment about the 12.5 Mil salary in 2015, look at his salaries for the next 4 years.
His salary averages 8.25 Mil over the next 4 years and then think about what Jerry Hughes may get on the open market in the next week, which in my mind will be close to 10+ Mil per year for the next 4 years.
Junior Gallette = 22 sacks in 2013 and 2014
Jerry Hughes = 20 sacks in 2013 and 2014
The market pays big for pass rushers

Agreed. Isn't front loading a contract what we've been wanting to do anyway? The move makes sense to me.
Lets wait for him to be cut unless its a 6th or 7th rounder. They might as well do it for that instead of releasing him. I don't like his 12.5 mill cap hit for 2015, maybe restructure his contract. But for OTTO I would love him, great track record of getting to the QB.

Which is probably why they are likely to draft one with the third pick.

I swear Henne was going for an arm lock and submission.
I like Galette, but I think he's more of a LEO than an OTTO.
My initial thought was no, but after thinking about it for a little while I think it could be a shrewd move if Galette fits the scheme. I wouldn't give up anything more than a late round pick because he's likely to be cut if they can't trade him. However, his contract is fair and I think Galette would get something similar on the open market. I'm not sure if he fits the OTTO spot since I don't recall him going into coverage all that much, but I think he could be a good LEO candidate since we still don't have a long term solution there.
