So long as he is dealing strictly with the cap, this is good. Hopefully, he doesn't help any former jets staff in landing a job in Jacksonville.
We have the most staff who used to have more responsibility but weren't very good in the NFL.  Championship!

Did he work with Lamping?

First, they brought in former head coach Doug Marrone to be "Assistant Head Coach". Next, they bring in former GM John Idzik to be front office "Consultant".

You couldn't be set up any better if you decided to "clean house".

It may not be turned on yet, but it sure looks like the hot seat is being set up.

Or Caldwell just needs a little help dishing out some contracts this offseason, some smart ones. Maybe Suh, Cobb, Thomas...etc so many players out there so we will be aggressive and they just need consultant. Thats my guess.

Don't understand the hire.

Does this mean we weren't capable of putting together and/or managing the cap without Idzik?

I swear, it just looks like the NFL is a good-ol-boys' league, if someone gets fired but needs a job - just call one of your contacts and you'll get hired doing something completely unnecessary.. and get a few hundred k$

This tells me they're making all preparations to spend some serious money. Which I like.

I see it as a young GM that believes in the old adage "two heads are better than one"   -   and an owner that's committed to doing whatever he can to get some wind in the sails.

It's Khan's money.  If he wants to spend it on a cap consultant/guy to help work out contract structures  - what's the big deal?
honest and mature move

Stop with logic. Deep dark conspiracy theories are what thrive on here!
Just another move where I blindly put faith in Dave and the front office.

Quote:Good thing the "Glacier" is not good for the talent side of things. For cap management this should be a win.

Oh, that's how you pronounce his name?

Oh, word!!! Wow! That's a wild thought. I hadn't even thought of that.

On a side note:

Though he may not specialize in scouting talent, he may be able to provide some positive insight on which Jets' free agents might make sense for the Jags. Maybe even any trade ideas
Most people don't realize this guy was a key figure in constructing the Warren Sapp led Bucs and the dominant Seahawks team we see today. Oh, but wait, he didn't turn around a horribly cap strapped horrible Jets team in two years so we'll butcher him!?! For what he's being hired to consult in, nice move Jaguars. Seriously.

The Glacier comes from the Around the NFL podcast.  They had a Jets fan on the team and that was his nickname for Mr Idzik.  It was based on how slowly he performed his duties on the talent side of the GM Responsibilities.  The Jets fans were happy when they let him go but did acknowledge the rock solid job he did in cap management.

Basically, great cap management does not a talent evaluator make.
Well this situation with the Jets and the Jag is like swapping junk items on Ebay.

Shad: Hey Woody how's the weather up there?

Woody: I hate you Shad but what do you want?

Shad: I have a business proposition for you I'll give your team my Gene Smith junk if you give me whatever's left of John Idzik junk.

Woody Johnson: Deal

Shad: Sucker (lol)

The hire can be a good one if Jags take the OPPOSITE action that Idzik recommends.

Yes, as bad as Idzik is, Gene Smith is 2x worse.

Idzik's biggest mistake was completely ignoring the WR position.  Of course it looks like QB Geno Smith was a bad move but given it was a 2nd round pick (#39 overall), it's better than our trading up to #10 to get Gabbert (just ahead of JJ Watt).

Who cares. Just win or get out.
