Quote:First, they brought in former head coach Doug Marrone to be "Assistant Head Coach". Next, they bring in former GM John Idzik to be front office "Consultant".
You couldn't be set up any better if you decided to "clean house".
It may not be turned on yet, but it sure looks like the hot seat is being set up.
You seriously can't be this stupid?
Idzik is a cap specialist. He's not a GM and clearly showed that in NY.
We're going to be big spenders in F/A, and it doesn't hurt to have more experience, (someone who was a GM nonetheless, there is only 32 positions like that in the world, mind you). He did great in Seattle managing the cap which led him to a GM gig.

With Seattle, Idzik was in charge of overseeing player negotiations, the team's compliance with the NFL salary cap, player personnel transactions, all football operations budgets, staff and team contracts, and most aspects of the day-to-day football operations while also remaining active in player evaluations. During this time, he also served as the club's primary liaison to the NFL Office and represented the club at league meetings.
Yeah, they were saying on 1010XL this morning that he was hired to assist with managing the salary cap. They do a pretty good job already. We'll see if he makes a difference.
Quote:Most people don't realize this guy was a key figure in constructing the Warren Sapp led Bucs and the dominant Seahawks team we see today. Oh, but wait, he didn't turn around a horribly cap strapped horrible Jets team in two years so we'll butcher him!?! For what he's being hired to consult in, nice move Jaguars. Seriously.
Bingo
OK Joking aside.
This dude went to school at Dartmouth (undergrad) and Duke as a grad student.
It's obvious this guy is intelligent. That said, if this hire is specific to managing the cap, I can see how that will benefit the Jags. We can only hope that our young players and free agent acquisitions do so well that we're one day talking about the difficult decisions on which of our pro bowlers we need to keep and which of our pro bowlers we need to let go.
I'm fine with the hire. People have to realize he did something right to get a GM job. He may have failed in that role with that much responsibility but it does not mean in a reduced role he will fail. This may be his niche in the league. He can also learn and enhance his weaknesses.
To me it makes sense to load up on all this previous coaches and executives. The connections and experienced gained for the future is priceless.
Quote:The Glacier comes from the Around the NFL podcast. They had a Jets fan on the team and that was his nickname for Mr Idzik. It was based on how slowly he performed his duties on the talent side of the GM Responsibilities. The Jets fans were happy when they let him go but did acknowledge the rock solid job he did in cap management.
Basically, great cap management does not a talent evaluator make.
Oh ok, thanks for the insight. I thought it was a play on how Idzik is pronounced, but i guess the z would have to come before the d

Being born into the right family helps. His dad used to be an assistance coach with the Jets.

I'm just pointing something out.
A stupid person would be the one who didn't have enough sense to realize that.

Duke?!!!!
Neeeeeeeeerd!

It's Khan's money. If he wants to spend it on a cap consultant/guy to help work out contract structures - what's the big deal?
Because if someone does not understand a hire, it must be a bad one.
Quote:WTH! That source is high, man why would you want anything to do with Idzik after the crap he caused up in NJ. Its like hiring Gene Smith back...
He's the reason the Jets are out of cap hell. Why wouldn't you want him as a cap guy?

Getting out of Cap Hell and getting our of Cap Hell and remaining competitive are 2 different things.

could be an indication that were seriously spending money on FA market

Maybe Kahn wants to totally move away from Weaver's habit of overpaying for spurts of production...

Definitely.
He already has to a large degree. With more FA activity looming this year, this move might help keep that trend headed the right way.
It seems like this FO believes in the Peter Principle, and uses other teams' missteps for its own gain.
In addition to managing the contracts of offseason acquisitions, he also plans to steal the Declaration of Independence.
