We have a lot of money. If they cut him, however, they could use the money that they saved as a roster bonus (or something) for a potential FA. I wouldn't cut him before signing someone to replace him though.

Agree.  They must have a successor plan that involves actual replacement.  Not the false promise of addition by subtraction.

I don't 'think' they would let Lewis go if they didn't have someone in mind to replace him. The questions this raises though is who would that someone be and do they represent an upgrade at TE? Our cap situation is well documented; we've got plenty of room to play with so its simply not the biggest issue in discussing Lewis. I tend to think of it more as a distracter to the real issue; can we realistically hope to get a genuine upgrade at TE?

If we can then hooray! If we can't... then the whole thing about re-structuring Lewis's contract becomes a lot more important. If he won't re-structure, we should be able to sign on someone just as productive as Lewis has been for a whole lot less.

I'm not worried about paying his final year.  If so, it's just sunk money/cap only for a single season.

Regardless, to your question of can we - we certainly need an impact player moving forward not named Lewis, regardless of whether FA or draft.  I think that's certainly possible.  After all, we're replacing Lewis and not an elite producing TE.

If you look at Outsiders, they have him rated below Clay Harbor in receiving.  (As always, take it with a grain of salt...)

At the same time, I'm not going to wring my hands or soil my shorts if we don't bring in a "name" TE or some can't miss prospect in the draft.  I'm not settling for Harbor or think he's got the position locked up, but his production vs Marcedes tells me we can upgrade this position without having to drain resources or valuable draft picks to accomplish the feat.

Imo time to cut ties with...

Henne

No, Especially with a new offensive system. Henne is a decent backup, and has been good to have around with Bortles learning things. His experiences with Bortles last year might also help in any transitioning issues with terminology and mapping aspects of last year and this year. Why risk a different backup with no history and chemistry?

Posluszny

I love Poz's effort and attitude, but am not sure he is worth his salary. Still, with him I would definitely want to see a solid upgrade before we replace him. Seems a bit risky with some of the other changes we are bound to make. I would leave him overpaid rather than let him walk.

Gerhart

i think injuries really hurt him. He looked better toward the end of the year, and I would keep him around for one more year. If he doesn't show improvement by then let him go.

Lewis

I differ between him and Poz in that he has only really had 2 decent seasons for us, and I don't see the upside versus taking a risk on a few other bargain players. If we get a stud in free agency, he walks. If we don't, then get a few other guys and see if he will lower his contract. If not, he still gets shown the door.

Scobee

This is a joke , right?

Scobee
Scobee? We don't need to cut one of our best players. Makes zero sense
I certainly don't feel Scobee is a bad kicker

Here are some of my reasons...

age: 32

will be an UFA in 2016

has a cap hit of 4,387,500 this year

will save 3.45 mil if released

My belief is the Jags can find a younger, cheaper kicker that can do as well
Nothing wrong with keeping Lewis and also getting a pass catching move TE.

Henne

I don't really see a reason for us to be in a hurry to cut Henne. He 'is what he is', which is a workable backup.

Posluszny

A really well liked and respected guy... who's become 'long in the tooth' for his position. He never was that fast and with age he's gotten slower. Considering his injuries, it's time to move on.

Gerhart

An experiment that just simply hasn't worked out. We don't have the offensive line he needs to be consistently productive. He may not have a lot of mileage on his legs for his age, but time doesn't lie; he get's injured a lot as a result. Say good bye.

Lewis

He did good for one season years ago and managed to milk out ten years here based on it. We clearly need an upgrade at TE. Good bye.

Scobee

Why the Scobee hate? He's still a highly reliable kicker. The blocked field goals were in large part (though not completely) due to our pathetic line. Unless we've got someone who's legitimately better in our back pocket, then we need to hang with the Scobee a bit longer.

Now here's some names that need to hit the road that weren't on your list:

Ace Sanders

a non-productive waste of locker room space here. Send him on down the road.

Cecil Shorts

Too injury prone! Nothing more need be said. He ain't much help on the sidelines at the time. Good bye.

There are others, obviously. You don't have the kind of track record we've got here without some exceptionally poor production from your players and coaches.

Lewis should have been cut two years ago. It's a pass catching TE league. Pass catching. Nobody knows when Marcedes will catch it or drop it and his production has been pathetic since his contract renewal.

This is usually not a hard position to draft for in the middle rounds. Players taken much lower than Lewis have had much better careers.

He has really been a bust considering his draft, well considering everything.

The man was kept by JDR because he could block and Jack loved 2 yards a carry and punt for field position.

Those days are long gone.

Age is (largely) irrelevant to a kicker.

UFA is also irrelevant for this year. Especially for a kicker.

And money is irrelevant to the Jaguars for reasons explained earlier.

Finding kickers who can make 30 yard field goals is easy, finding guys who can reliably make 54 yard field goals is hard.
Lmao at trying to cut Scobee to "save" money this year lol.

If anything, we need to resign him for another 3 years.

Do we not remember how hard it was for us to find a kicker after Mike Hollis?
Marcedes Lewis' contract is right up there with Garrard's in the category of terrible contracts. Game was becoming pass heavy, yet we insisted on signing a TE who had only 1 decent year receiving-wise, and a quarterback whose best asset was his legs.

I think most people here aren't old enough to have remembered the likes of Seth Marler.

It's a fairly deep TE free agent pool that could give you an upgrade over Lewis (ie. Julius Thomas, Jordan Cameron, Charles Clay, Jermaine Gresham, Niles Paul, Rob Housler, and others).  Lewis is due to be paid about $6.7m in new money this year, primarily base salary.  I think most of these guys, other than Thomas, could be signed for this amount or less.  If you can spend a similar or less amount of funds, and get a better player, I would do it.

I don't mind the Jags paying high salaries to these guys, but jeez, at least pay the players who actually produce..

Marcedes wore out his welcome I think..
Three years ago says hi...and emphatically yes.
Quote:I think most people here aren't old enough to have remembered the likes of Seth Marler.
Or Hayden Epstein.

Or Tim "Short & Wide" Seder.

Or Richie "One Game" Cunningham

And, of course, Danny Boyd (the pipes, the pipes are calling).

...yeah, cutting Scobee would be asinine.
IF they get a FA top tier TE and they draft a TE then Lewis for sure will be gone.

IF they  get a FA top tier TE and they don't draft a TE then Lewis will most likely stay because they already have enough cap space so cutting him doesn't do us much.

But I want Lewis gone because regardless he will save 6.5 and that can be used for another TE.
