It seems like everybody expects David Caldwell to pick a pass rusher if he does not trade down. I think there is a 100% chance we have other options in the first round because players move up and down the draft boards for all 32 teams through the end of April. The combine, pro days, and private workouts will change everything except team needs. So let's see who is not a pass rusher, can fill a need in Jacksonville, and has a good chance of being a top 10 pick.
For the purpose of this thread, do not make any assumptions about free agency. Like the draft, there is no way to know before March 10 whicb veterans Caldwell will sign to fill needs. Also, sometimes it is a good idea to fix something in both free agency and the draft. We did that to get running backs and linebackers last year.
Now don't get me wrong; I am not saying we should stay away from all pass rushers. I just think board members should open their minds to other possibilities.
So you're saying that at the third overall pick, there's a 100% chance that players at a position other than defensive end will be available, correct?
Given that any player other than a pass rusher looks to be a huge reach at the third pick (and this early in the process--that can change), I'd say that Amari Cooper becomes the best option available. I really hope we don't draft Amari Cooper.

Because he is a wide receiver? With mock drafts slotting him at #4, he certainly would not be a reach if we pick him.

It is a reach as he would be a luxury. We have young WR's capable of doing their job. Our defensive line is getting old, so there is a need to get younger and get talent.
Leonard Williams - run stopper.

Luxury does not mean reach. Luxury speaks to need. Reach speaks to player rankings.
Leonard Williams. If Tenn. takes Williams a QB will be available and give a great opportunity to trade down.
DT - Danny Shelton?
CB - Trae Waynes?
Good question MJF.
I don't think we have enough need at CB, WR or RB to justify taking one of those players.
There is no way we'll take another QB, one year after drafting Bortles.
And the tight ends and safeties this year simply aren't top-ten-pick material (even though these are areas of need for us.
That leaves linebackers and offensive line.
I can see us maybe picking a DE/LB pass rusher, but are the other linebackers like McKinney and Perryman worth a top pick this year ? Again I don't think so.
So that leaves RT. I would love us to pick Scherff. Strong, physical, brutal - he's the dominant force we are badly missing on out OLine. But I wonder if he fits the model of the agile zone blocker. (And I know we're not supposed to mention free agency in this thread, but I would be amazed if we don't land a RT in free agency)
But assuming we are just talking about possible top pick-talent.. How about... Shaq Thompson.
The guy can play LB, Safety and RB. And most importantly, he makes things happen. He could be a real superstar if he realises his potential and I would love to see him in a Jaguars uniform.
Thats the dread scenario we face. If one of the edge rushers (for me its between Gregory and Fowler) dont really make a case for the #3 slot- then yes a tradedown would be nice, but that aside, it seems like Amari Cooper is BAP.
I don't see any options at 3 other than D-Line/OLB. We're not grabbing a WR, QB, or OL at 3. DB/S is out of the question. Not really sure what else there is.
Anything other than pass rusher or trade down would shock and anger me.
To me you gotta go with Danny Shelton. I realize DT isnt the biggest need but the dude is huge with great feet. Those guys are rare. With him though he isnt just a space eater, the guy had double digit tackles for a loss and 9 sacks as a senior. This guy has the potential to be Haloti Ngata but a better pass rusher. And as far as I know the guy isnt a thug. And was an academic all american. A lot going for him as a prospect.
If Leonard Williams isnt there, I may consider Shelton over Ray, Fowler, or Gregory. It depends on what we learn about those other guys as the process moves on. Is Ray as big as listed and as athletic as they say? Is Gregory injury prone? Is Fowler more versatile instead of being great at one thing?

You totally missed the entire point of this thread: to talk about players who are
not defensive linemen or pass-rushing linebackers.
If there were no pass rushers in the draft, who would you want?

you didnt say not a defensive lineman. all you said was not a pass rusher. You dont draft Danny Shelton to be a pass rusher. You draft him to be Haloti Ngata or Vince Wilfork.
Aside from QB, there arent any non-defensive lineman worth taking at 3.

You obviously know and love the team. You are clearly very knowledgeable and ask great questions and make great points.
So respectfully I am kinda going to put you on the spot ....
Tampa takes a QB
Tennessee takes Leonard Williams
Jags are unable to trade down
who is your pick at #3 and why?
Others please feel free to answer as well
Landon Collins
He would improve either safety position
He's one of the freak athletes of the draft
He's got a good name
SEC

Nice choice. Fills a big need.
But a bit of a reach at #3 perhaps ?

The answer depends on whether moving Landon Collins to free safety or drafting a natural free safety later would be a bigger upgrade. I like the idea of having someone who is good at both safety positions if necessary.
