Wouldn't be opposed to cutting him. He is as much a liability in blitz pickup as all the other RBs on the roster. We need a complete back, and we don't currently have room for one on the depth chart. Someone's gotta go. May as well be the highest paid, slowest RB on the roster.
He looked better when he got healthy toward the end of the year. That said, I really don't want to use a roster spot on him and would rather take the risk of someone with real potential. There's going to be a RB that slips in the draft so why not release him and see what happens. I know that no other team is going to pay him $3m-$4m per year. Duke Johnson, Ameer Abdullah, insert name here, would an upgrade at a much lower price. Heck, the Ravens paid Justin Forsett $730,000
I'd like to see he and Robinson on the field together
Quote:This is kinda like the argument about if we should cut justin blackmon, there's literally no reason to do it.
Then again JB isn't collecting checks, nor does he count against the roster, and he's actually talented or was, who knows at this point.
we're 60 million under the cap with his roster taken into account what difference is it going to make?
Quote:Fullback or cut him.
He's not going to be a fullback. He isn't an upgrade over what we have there either.

I'm just point out JB is like a non entity until he comes back, there is zero reason to cut him, where as toby does at least take up a roster spot and collects a salary.
Can't we just take him out behind the shed and call it a day? Let storm Johnson get more carries along with todman and Robinson. That's a serviceable trio there.

Difference is Blackmon is GOOD and Gerhart SUCKS.
Our worst back is our highest paid and we could toss a 3rd or 4th round pick at a RB in the draft and likely find someone more talented....
Cut him. Yes theres no reason to cut him due to cap true but other then that theres no reason to keep him. He adds nothing we cant find for cheaper and takes a roster spot for nothing.
Quote:Cutting him to make room for players who have played better than him or to make room for more talented runners. I'm not saying I think we should cut him but depending on how things shape up, it wouldn't shock me to see him cut.
We have room...

Storm Johnson is the worst RB on this team, and Gerhart the best RB catching out of the backfield. He's the best blocking RB too. I wouldn't say he offers "nothing".
The position can certainly be upgraded. All this "we invested money in him" is kind of irrelevant. We invested money in Dekoda Watson and cut him mid season. If we can upgrade the position I think we should.
With that said I wouldn't mind having him back to see if he can prove himself because I saw some flashes.
people are acting like he has no blocking skills, yet that's why he's in on third downs instead of other players.
As the point 5 million is not my money there is no harm in taking him to camp to compete
if anyone gets cut i think its storm Johnson who simply has no clue where the hole is
hopefully he makes a d rob jump which makes Gerhart or todman expendable but if not what Gerhart showed towards the end if the year makes it worth another look at him.healthy
Quote:As long as he isn't starting I don't care.
This... D Rob will start. Toby, Storm, rookie and todman battle for the rest. I think D Rob will have a great season. He was looking legit before he got hurt.

Maybe he'll get cut but don't cut him before you have someone better to replace him. Especially considering the team has plenty of cap space. Don't forget that there are no proven running backs on the team. Robinson has skill but he got banged up which isn't a surprise considering he's a converted QB.
In the off season, making room on the roster isn't an issue. There are more than enough roster spots to keep him and bring in players who could potentially replace him.
Toby is due a $500,000 roster bonus which is the only cap savings if he is cut early, which is pretty much considered chump change as far as the cap and it would allow us to have him here for the full off season and pre season.
If they find a better guy during camp and then cut him, so be it, but there really isn't a point to preemptive cut him from the roster.
I think we need to consider as well that we haven't had a starting running back stay healthy since MJD won the rushing title..... They aren't going to cut him and DRob hasn't exactly showed he has been the most durable or reliable RB in the past. DRob is also a liability in pass protection as he doesn't have the size to be a blocker yet. now if he comes in next season massively improved then we might have something.
No, do not cut Toby Gerhart. If he's healthy and our offensive line improves, he will have a big year next year.
