Quote:I think if they get the right tackle position figured out, and Linder gets bigger and better at run blocking we'll might be pleasantly surprised with what Gerhardt is able to do. He showed it at the end of the season that once he gets into the secondary that it takes 3 guys to bring him down. Just get him past the HUGE guys and we'll be able to power run him into the ground like they did in Stanford given that he stays healthy..

I think this is a very good point. None of our running backs were able to make much headway up the middle this season, but at least Gerhart showed he could break a few tackles once lanes opened up for him (when he was healthy).

I would be very surprised if they let him go.
Why wouldn't you keep him?  He's cheap and it's not like everybody else was burning it up last season.

Sure if we wants to change his position to fullback.

And yet another poster judging the guy by his complexion.  Aren't we past that yet?

Brilliant
I think Gerhart is going to be cut.  It's a matter of time.  It's supposed to be a good draft for running backs.  I think we draft our running back of the future in the second or third round.  It leaves our running backs as:

1.  Draft Pick

2.  Denard Robinson - He'll get some carries as a complimentary back and will also back up the draft pick.  I don't he's good enough to be the main back, at least not on a good team, which is what eventually want to be.

3.  Jordan Todman - Primarily kick returner, but would also be our third backup.  I like him as a running back better than Gerhart.

4.  Storm Johnson - He would be a bubble player.  I wasn't impressed with him, but if he can convince the coaches that he's a guy that can be developed or can contribute on special teams, he might make the roster.

There's no place for Gerhart.  He's just not that good and he's not a possible developmental guy like Storm Johnson.  We pretty much know what we got with him -- a mediocre backup running back.  I think he's gone.

Quote:What exactly did Storm Johnson do?

While he didn't get many carries as a rookie, I was encouraged with those he did get and feel that down the road he very well may take over as our feature back. Watching him he has a natural running style where I can see him developing into a guy like DeMarco Murray.

Quote:In the off season, making room on the roster isn't an issue. There are more than enough roster spots to keep him and bring in players who could potentially replace him.

Toby is due a $500,000 roster bonus which is the only cap savings if he is cut early, which is pretty much considered chump change as far as the cap and it would allow us to have him here for the full off season and pre season.

If they find a better guy during camp and then cut him, so be it, but there really isn't a point to preemptive cut him from the roster.

Good point. I don't see Gerhart going anywhere at least early on. If nothing else he's a fine short-yardage situation pounder.
