Quote:Regarding the "islamic flag".
every POTUS and first lady change the decor of the white house to suit their own personalities...I have never been to the Oval Office nor the white house so I can't say that their is or is not an Islamic flag...I should have said "I have heard" or "rumor has it" there is an Islamic flag

"I have heard" + Obama = false information that can be easily disproved by doing even the most rudimentary of fact checking. Seriously, it was like a 10 second Google search.

am im certain that as in every search there is both information for and against...I will choose to say...I have never seen with my own eyes the existance of an Islamic flag in the white house, but I have never been there to look either. so I can neither confirm nor deny the existance of an Islamic flag at the white house
wrong_box, no offense bud but saying "I heard" or "They say"... is a pretty good indicator that a story is false, or greatly exaggerated. Unless of course, it can be backed up with solid sources; of which there were none.

or it can be truth..."they say, Obama eats expensive dinners every night" and it be true (not saying it is, but it has been widely reported)...for every argument and information found on the interwebs there is an opposite argument...

Just because something can't or isn't yet proven to be false doesn't mean you can fills in the gaps with whatever fairy tale notion appeals to you.

I have corrected my statement(s)..try and keep up
I can choose to take whatever side I want to...I can side with the people who say there is an Islamic flag in the white house, I can side with the people who say that is incorrect, or I can say, I have heard there is but I've never seen it so I don't know for sure because I've never been there to look...Just because you have never seen one or read that it is a lie doesn't mean it's true! Oh wait! EVERYTHING on the internet is true!

You can certainly choose to pick the side that likes to make baseless and unsupported claims. Or you can choose the more rational and informed side that would like to see some real evidence for any claims made.
Quote:As a Veteran I dislike the current POTUS...I dislike him as an American Citizen as well...He keeps cutting the Veteran benefits to the point that the VA can't even take care of soldiers discharged due to injuries suffered during battle...He very rarely even salutes the soldiers when he walks past them getting of AF1 or M1... There were some pictures ( I guess they aren't called pictures anymore, they are called images) circulating showing a Marine standing arms length from him holding his umbrella during a rain storm while he held a press conference or something, while the other foreign leader held his own...Then there were images of other past POTUS holding their own umbrellas during press conferences and such... It's this kind of behaivior that gets under the skin of military personell past and present...Not to mention the cutting of the benefits on a regular basis while POTUS and congress increase their benefits and/or wages every single year...The current POTUS doesn't even hold his hand over his heart while the national anthem is being played, has an Islamic flag in the Oval Office, and shows very little respect for the military personell...
There is ONE thing that I respect that he has done, and that is sending the SPEC-OPS into Packistan to get Bin Laden without discussing the issue or even telling them our military was entering their country on a covert mission...That very well could have been career sucide...It took a lot of balls to make that decision and I can respect him for giving the order to go, other than that, I really don't have much good to say...
About this saluting business. The first 38 Presidents did not salute military personnel. Not even Eisenhower, the former 5 star General, saluted when he was President. It was Ronald Reagan that started saluting soldiers. When he found out that Presidents never saluted, he wrote the Commandant of the Marine Corps about it, and the answer he got back was, you're the President, salute if you want to. So that's how it got started.
But then, why in the world would a civilian salute a military person? It makes no sense. What's a civilian doing saluting?

That particular civilian is also CiC, so maybe it is appropriate.

Eisenhower didn't do it. Teddy Roosevelt didn't do it. Neither did any of the first 38 Presidents until Reagan decided he wanted to do it.

I just find it to be another in a long list of extremely petty things people choose to dislike Obama for. There are plenty of valid reasons to not like the guy but the saluting thing just seems incredibly low brow to me.

First of all, the President is the Leader of The Military. After taking the Oath of Office he theoretically is no longer a "civilian" in the way that an average citizen is. That being said, there is no written "rule" or law that says the President is required to render and/or return a salute.
Second, the military salute is a sign of respect for the position or rank that a person holds. Generally speaking, only officers are saluted and the junior ranking member (officer or enlisted) is the one that renders the salute. It is customary to acknowledge the salute by returning the salute. There are cases when this custom might be reversed such as a higher ranking person saluting a member that has been awarded The Medal of Honor.
Think of it in terms of saying "thank you" to someone. It is customary and polite to say "you're welcome".

Exactly. You aren't saluting the person, you are saluting the rank. It's military customs and courtesies. When he took that oath, he became the highest ranking person in our military. When someone renders that salute, and you fail to return it, it is disrespectful, a slap in the face if you will. Just the same as someone not rendering the salute to the higher ranking person. I'm assuming most haven't served, so they have no idea how this works.

It probably doesn't matter much to people who have never served in the military. However, those of us who have notice those kinds of things, and I for one see it as offensive and rude.
Also, this thread is all about Military Perception of The President.

Sort of like this?
I never saw a dog salute before!
