Watching that game earlier really made me appreciate B. gabbert. At least he was so bad that it was a no brainer to can him (Masterful trade by Caldwell). With this Dalton guy, You got someone who can get you to the playoffs but never win in it. The very definition of QB purgatory which I think might be overall 10 times worse than drafting a complete bust.

Jags moved on in 3 years. The bengals might have to lose yet another playoff game before they realize Dalton can't bring them to the promise land.
Wow this is the first thread that I have seen that says "I'm glad we got Gabbert" EVER!!!!!!!!!!!

Dalton is incapable of throwing receivers open

At the rate these young QBs are turning out duds, We might not have gotten the worst end of the deal. Ours burnt out super fast, The rest of them are decent enough to keep fools clinging to false hope. If we win the big one with Bortles, Gabbert might turn out to be our best pick ever by a strange twist of fate. Any other QB would've probably derailed us from getting Bortles. (Russel Wilson withstanding)

The Bengals miss their top WR and top 2 TE

Two receivers. Marvin Jones too.
Irregardless, Bengals still lose that game with or without his two WR's and TE's. Dalton shrinks and Luck was plenty capable of putting up more points if he needed to.

Yeah, I just never got the feeling that Dalton could actually win the game today.

He had his chances when they were only down by 3, but Dalton is going to Dalton.

He makes a good point. Dalton is the very definition of a choke-artist. I guess it's do well all season, make the playoff but lose, or do poorly until you find a QB that can take you all the way. Both sides of this argument are justifiable.

Unfortunately when Luck was drafted by the colts, I think it really did start a new trend for teams. One that Caldwell was well aware of and even adapted himself. He admitted towards mailing in his first 2 seasons. The obvious benefit is having a high draft pick for who you think will be your franchise QB. Make no mistake, Caldwell did exactly what Indianapolis did to get Luck.

At this point, Its in a teams best interest to tank (by cutting the fat and playing rookies) until they find "their guy" and then build from there.

As a fan, This is sickening but I am glad to be on the right side of a trend for once.
It is the red hair...its proven science

You gotta have a soul to win in the playoffs
When everyone was blasting me for overusing the phrase QB purgatory during predraft last year, this is exactly why I did it. I too would take Gabbert every time over Dalton. You know he's got it or he doesn't fast, and if he doesn't you move on and try again. You get a Dalton and you're stuck for half a decade or more at least.

I will say that the Bengals did a great job with Dalton's extension, though. After next year they can cut him with no guaranteed money left, that was very wisely structured. However, it will also be very hard for them to just cut the QB who 'led' them to 5 straight playoff appearances (assuming they make it again next year), so we'll see.

I think getting to watch Luck go directly against Dalton shows to me pretty clearly the difference between having a good QB and having a mediocre QB...

I mean is that a real knock on Dalton?  He's mediocre.  He's OK.  He's a QB that a GM needs to build very good weapons around and build a very good O-Line.

With AJ Green in, and with a better O-Line, Dalton and the Bungles could have easily won that game.

But they didn't, and in essence, the game was over before it started.  Dalton is just not good enough to carry a team.  He's a mediocre QB that can get a team into the playoffs with a good team around him.

Is that so bad?  I'll tell you what, we had a mediocre QB in DG and if GS could have done a better job acquiring talent, we could have been a better playoff contender too...  Of course, then DG got hurt and we would have had to put in Gabbert, and the wheels would have fallen off anyways...

And we'd still be right back to where we are now...  It's almost as though our suck-i-tude has been fore-written by the football gods...

Dalton obviously didn't play great today, but that was pretty tough going every play his receivers were absolutely blanketed In the 2nd half. Luck probably would have struggled if he had Hilton, Wayne and Fleenee missing too.

I think Luck would have taken Nicks, Moncrief, and Dwayne Allen and still smashed the Bengals.

Even if they weren't ever open?
The Bengals gave Dalton a huge contract too right?

Yes and no, mostly no. It has no guaranteed money after next season so they can cut him scot free soon. I presume that's what will happen if Dalton once again "leads" them to a one and done playoff season. However, I could also see it being hard to sell it to the fans that a franchise known as the Bungles for so long are just going to cut the QB who, again, "led" them to the playoffs 5 straight years.

I think that Wilson is one of the most overrated QB's today. Take away the L.O.B. and Marshawn Lynch and what do you have? a QB that struggles in the pocket and can't handle pressure.
