FBT said it --- Players go where the $$$ is.

$$$ + Florida + Gus is very appealing.

Here's a site that lists next year's free agents:

http://nfltraderumors.co/2015-nfl-free-agents-list/

If there's ever a year where the Jaguars land a marquee free agent, it will be next year.  Teams will use the franchise tag next year on several of the names on that list, so we won't have an opportunity with all of them.  There are two interesting situations I see that may end up being beneficial for us, however.  Both Denver and Dallas have at least two big name guys going into free agency next year.  They can each only franchise tag one of them.  If the player that isn't franchised is smart, he'll want to test free agency and I don't think anyone will beat us when it comes to money next year.

The two players in Denver are Demaryius Thomas and Julius Thomas.  I can't imagine them not tagging Demaryius, so it's quite possible Julius is going to have an opportunity to test free agency next year unless one of these guys wants to stay in Denver so bad that he takes a below market deal.

The two players in Dallas are Dez Bryant and Demarco Murray.  I can't imagine them not tagging Dez, so it's quite possible Demarco is going to have an opportunity to test free agency unless either one of these guys wants to remain in Dallas so bad that he takes a below market deal.

We do need a true power back, but I'd be leery on Demarco, who will be 28 next year and has been injury prone and who Dallas is running into the ground this year.  I'd rather take my chances in the draft at RB.  I'd love to have a true weapon at TE in Julius Thomas, though.

Here's the NFLPA's cap report which shows us having the most room at $29 million followed by Cleveland at just under $25 million.  No one else has over $20 million:

The number for the Jags will almost certainly exceed $50M when they likely cut Lewis, Poz, and possibly a few others.  We need a superstar - maybe Suh??

Stop it. Tell me one guy who won't take the best deal. It's professional football.
Quote:There should be some impact WR's available - we really need someone veteran leadership.  Possibly someone like Avril or Suh on the D-line, may also be a good year for impact LBers.

I thought Blackmon would be back to provide that "veteran leadership".
Quote:If you look at the Seahawks as a free agent source again in 2015, 3 are worthy to mention....

DE Cliff Avril

OG James Carpenter

LB KJ Wright

Byron Maxwell too, I think.

Sub seems like a player who will go on vacation after cashing in on his FA check. I think we've had enough of those types around here. Not to mention he's a bad fit in our scheme. He would essentially replace Marks, who's without a doubt our best player on the line.

Instead sign me up on the McCourty/Wright/Avril bandwagon, the Julius or Demaryius bandwagon and/or the Gresham/Cameron/Clay bandwagon. And just for good measure the Murray/Bryant bandwagon.
With our current cap, we could bring in some top name players. This will probably make some people think I was playing Madden, but I assure you I am not.

Positions of Need: Hybrid TE, NT, FS, and OLB

Positions of Interest: MLB, CB, LG, OT, WR, DE

Free Agent Targets:

Jermaine Gresham, he is a versatile TE. He can block and catch. He could also be a playmaker when he has the ball.

Damon Harrison, is a NT that plays for the Jets currently. He could be a target if we don't sign Roy Miller.

Jeremy Maclin, yes a WR. I don't want a WR that much as I want our group to develop, but Maclin provides us with someone who can go deep and is a play maker. Its not just this year either, in the past I felt he was better than Jackson. He could help develop Bortles by providing another solid option.

I would also like for us to sign Alan Ball again.

Gresham - 8 Mil per year

Harrison - 3.5 Mil per year

Maclin - 9 Mil per year

Ball - 3 Mil per year

Those were guesses at what it would take to get the players. I haven't paid as much attention to competitive pay.
Omg maclin would be amazing...

Blackmon and maclin

Fix the oline

Wow?
There are a lot of players we can go after. The Watson,Gehardt and Hood signings have not been good. In fact no one from last year except Clemons and maybe Bryant have been worth the money. Also look how much Scobee is making? Over 4,000,000 which can be upgraded with a younger leg and tons less money.

TE-LG-LEO-S-LB should be tops on our list.

I don't see them going after  LG after signing Beadles to a huge contract last year.

Cliff Avril would be an upgrade over Chris Clemons.

Safety is probably the area that is most in need of upgrades.

LB is one of the deeper positions in the draft so you can probably fill a hole that way.
Considering we've had oodles of money going into FA every year and haven't spent it, what confidence is there that we will actually spend this year.  The argument that we have heard for not spending much is that we are saving it to be able to re-sign our own guys when they come up for new contracts.  Are we going to continue saving our money in the hopes that these new draft picks are good enough to re-sign, or will we actually go out there and get some talent.

Sorry, consider me jaded.

This should have zero credibility when Rex Ryan is behind Gus Bradley.  Also, [BLEEP] is Jason Garrett doing on the list?  Is that just because he works for Jerry Jones?

If you know the history of this team, they actually have and will spend money. The only reason we have money now is because all the bad contracts Caldwell cut last year and the fact we have no one to resign this off season.

Then the fact that the new CBA says you have to spend up I think 95% of the cap by 2015-2016 is why people are saying this. We have to spend money by the rules and the only people who we could acquire that are worth these dollar amounts are free agents.

We'll see what happens. It would be nice to get top tier free agents, but for fans to be skeptical is not unfounded. I'm hoping for the best. I still have faith in Caldwell, it's our coaches that have the inability to develop talent, in my opinion

Our existing pass rushers are more than adequate. Our future PR Specialist should come via the draft...

We actually don't know this. The last regime that truly truly signed marquee free-agents was Coughlin/Huygue when this was a fresh and brand new franchise. Shack/Gene and JDR eras focused more on a mix of B-level free-agents (some with potential for breakout like Peterson/Heyward, and Sessions/Robinson for Gene)

The only thing we have to go by in believing that this team will sign free-agents is that it needs to because of:

a) CBA requirements

b) it needs to be competitive in year 3 for Dave/Gus to survive

That said, really elite players will rarely hit free-agency. So more than likely, we will be using most of that cap space for 2nd tier players like we have done in the past. Which is OK. This team needs solid veteran/experience starters. The key will be, and always be...will Caldwell's 2013 (Luke, Cyp, Denard) and 2014 class (Blake, Lee, Arob) step up their game and be the cornerstones of this franchise that they were drafted to be?
The words of Khan:

Quote:*The Jaguars, under the Caldwell/Bradley leadership, have pinpointed March 2015 as a big free agent year and Khan said the team will be “very active.”

“We were active this year – look at our defensive line, which is pretty good and they’re mostly free agents,” he said. “We’re going to be very active for a number of reasons. Other teams don’t have the luxury we have – they have constraints and can’t sign everyone. We’ll be on the flip side.”

I'm not sure about you but Khan has done everything he has said he was going to do. I don't see any reason to start doubting him now.

You can never have enough proven pass rushers!  The draft isn't a guarantee.
If Justin Houston somehow hits free agency, I hope we just hand him a blank check and tell him to write whatever number he wants.
