Well in Denver's case they have to sign both Demaryius Thomas and Julius Thomas and because of Peyton's salary they can't keep them both even with the franchise tag.

I'd keep JT over DT. Much harder to find that dominant TE. Peyton makes all receivers look awesome.

That being said. I've always been a fan of Marcedes and I do think he does a lot more than people give him credit for. I'd be fine with Lewis, Harbor, and a rookie going into next year.
Quote:A lot of people give Marcedes Lewis flack because he makes a lot of money and doesn't play to that number. But what I'm not getting is why it matters? We have the money and he is so valuable as a red zone target and a blocker. Not only that, but Lewis is a leader in the locker room and the players love him. He was balling last year towards the end of the year. It's a noticable difference with him out of the line-up. Lewis is the man!

Im sorry. I cant agree with you here. He is valuable as trade bait.
Quote:Jimmy Graham is also a free agent.
No he's not, he already got his nice contract
Quote:We tried to lowball him and if everything is even acourse he's going to go to a place where his earning potential in the future is greater by playing with a certain qb. Let me ask you this who in the hell is going to take less money to play with chad henne? lol. By the time he finish with his 3 year 15 million dollar deal he's going to get a huge payday because of peyton manning throwing to him so in our case we got to overpay for a player from the beginning until we become competitive as a franchise.

How do you know what we offered? My point is that its not all just about the money. There are other deciding factors. I can bet most WRs would be willing to take a pay cut to have an opportunity to start and play with Manning vs any QB the Jags trot out, including Bortles.
I think/hope he will be a nice addition for Bortles this season when he gets back.

Wow how I missed that I dunno
Quote:Huh?  Marcedes is NOT a valuable target in the red zone, and he's constantly hurt. His $7 M is a waste regardless of whether we have the cap room or not.

The best ability is availability.  Marcedes can't stay healthy.  Same as CS III - if you can't stay on the field, nothing else matters.

I guess we are just going to have to disagree, man. Nothing wrong with that. I like him as a target and love him as a blocker. That's his real value. And we start to blur the lines of subjectivity when we say red zone target, but I'd rather have him out there on a 3rd and goal situation than Clay Harbor, Nic Jacobs, and more than most of the receivers. Again, not a bad thing to disagree.

I agree with this. That said, I like both players. Let's see if they can make the big plays we know they are capable of and survive the rest of the season. Yea, they stay, nay, they go. And, Harbor has been terrific.. so there's that too.

They give him flack because as a big TE target, there's just way too many games that he's either invisible in or puts up very pedestrian numbers, especially at his salary.

Look around the league and you see the better TEs helping/bailing out their QB in a lot of situations and we just don't get enough of that from ML.

Now maybe some of that is on coaching, but ML needs to make himself an offensive presence/weapon on the field, especially as big as he is, compared to the guys who are trying to cover him.

Simply put, he is way overpaid for what the Jags get from him and that's why ML gets a lot of flack.
I do like Lewis, He has done very well blocking for us and he has showed he can be a target in the passing game. Im hoping him nad Bortles can mesh together. As far as JT coming here from Denver, Im still not sold on him over all as he has manning throwing to him and the money to bring him here might be crazy.

Yes he is. He caught 5 Redzone TDs in very few games last year. You can't name 3 other TE's that are better blockers either.

JB isnt costing the jaguars a roster spot or one single dime.

what about the wins he's costed us?
Still say the money could be better used elsewhere.. Jordan Cameron is a no-go due to injury concerns (even though, if he could stay healthy I'd love to have him), Julius Thomas is almost untouchable (the Broncos won't let him get away), and Jermaine Gresham is too inconsistent. I would say, however, I wouldn't mind taking a flyer on Rob Housler. Otherwise, give me Ben Koyack in the draft and let's move along.

No one's trading for that player with that contract, ever.
For what it's worth, he was doing well in the game he got injured

I run hot and hold on Marcedes.  The biggest concern for me since gabbert has left is his inability to stay on the field.  He's been lost to injury this year and last year.

Yes the drops when BG was our QB were frustrating to say the least.  But last year, he came on pretty well when he played.  It's just that he's not getting a lot of reps because he's been getting injured.  Obviously, injuries are part of the game...  But I wonder how our offense would have looked with Marcedes playing every game this season.

Now with that said, if the coaching staff continues to only target TEs only 4 times a game, it really won't matter if Lewis in healthy or not.

TEs are a big part of the offense for teams that are successful.  Look at NO, NE, and Denver...  But our OC doesn't really seem to be moving our offense towards that.

Having a TE run up the middle might relieve some of the pressure, but we just haven't really been utilizing that aspect.  I hope Marcedes comes back and shines, but really, if he's not in the game plan, it won't matter, will it?

I see this tossed around frequently when E. Sanders is brought up. I think Sanders is really good and is playing in a better offense that utilizes his speed better.  Sure Manning helps - but I don't think "he makes all receivers look awesome."

Welker looked much better with Brady.

on topic:  I think Marcedes will give the offense a bit of a boost. He played well last year and looked good briefly this year before the injury.

Just bring in a playmaker at the position.

Marcedes is a good blocker but a below average pass catcher. Even though he is very tall and big, he has poor agility and ball skills.

He plays much better along the LOS than he does in space.
