Quote:So it's impossible that the LB position could still be improved?
Player evaluation on a ridiculously young team doesn't just stop because your defense has four good games (only two from the linebackers).
I don't get the concerns surrounding this team trying to improve the linebacker spot. So what if Goerge gets some snaps at MLB or OTTO this week or next? The Jags poached a fifth rounder from another team's PS and they want to see what he's got to offer. I'm all for it. It's not like they have to leave him out there if he sucks.
I don't disagree, especially if the staff has determined the Otto position is under-performing. But there's also an argument for gaining some continuity when things are going well.

Absolutely. I hope we are nearly to the point where that can happen more. We've gotten there along the D-line. The LB position may be close - at least until the offseason when at least one upgrade is likely coming.
If Thomas or George can actually turn into a quality starter, we're suddenly in a better place at LB and with the salary cap.
In terms of continuity - the secondary has the longest road ahead before that happens IMO. I like the fact the we'll likely get the chance to evaluate Colvin some this year at least. Being able to know where McCray, Gratz and Colvin fit moving forward will be good entering the offseason.
One good thing coming from all of this is that we know that even if none become long-term starters we have some quality depth/rotation in low-cost players like Thomas and George at LB, McCray at corner and Abry Jones/ Ryan Davis along the line. Caldwell is looking pretty darn good on the value front.

The DB positions are settled/not in question...
The LB position IS in question since Poz's absence...
NH3...
I personally feel this is more of the Otto position under performing. JT Thomas showed he was a good Otto before Poz's injury. Could it be that the staff believes Thomas at the Otto and George at MLB is a better combination than Thomas at MLB and Reynolds/Watson at Otto.

Very possible. The "finding the best three" comments from Gus would support this being the reasoning to some degree.
Quote:The DB positions are settled/not in question...
Not true, NH3. They are still evaluating Gratz. He's been hot and cold. They have yet to evaluate Colvin, and we are 'starting' a back-up free safety at nickel in a few days.
The only thing really set is that McCray will
likely be one of our corners moving forward and Cyp will be SS.

Obviously you missed the news about Alan Ball being put on IR and Aaron Colvin practicing. Those two facts leave the door wide open at cornerback and nickel back.
It's only because Reynolds Nd Watson śüćk snd they want to see what they have in George

Not surprised at all if true,
Had the opportunity to watch George a lot in college at Iowa state. Multiple 150 tackle seasons, good in coverage too. Kid is a baller, all over the field multiple years there at Mike backer. Very athletic and great instincts. Originally from Florida, Thought whoever drafted this kid would be getting a big time steal. glad to see he fell in our laps. This could be two LB steals drafted in the fifth round.
On a side note another really good lLB on a not very good team I have seen a lot is Ben Heney (sp?) from Kansas. This kid like George is all over the place with a bit more size than George. Could be a great steal for whoever drafts him next year.
Quote:They liked him before the draft, snagged him off the Jets PS when they had a spot.
For anyone wondering why change now that the D is playing well, there is always room for improvement on a 1-7 team, especially when a young player shows promise.
We most likely wouldnt be 1-7 if the quarterback quit throwing all these damn picks. That's the only improvement this team needs to move forward and start winning at this point. The defense has been on point for a good minute now.

The loss at Tennessee was caused by a special teams error that allowed a field goal attempt to get blocked. Blake Bortles threw more interceptions in the win against the Browns than he did there. He also was not the starter in our first three losses, when the biggest problem was third down, not turning the ball over.

this has nothing to do with thomas playing badly
Bradley said last week before thomas even got a snap that george might get a look
Its obvious george is someone they have been interested in since the draft considering they snapped him off the jets practice squad
if you have three players practicing well you try and fit them all in your team
luckily thomas can play the otto so moving him along the line to let george get reps has no harm and suddenly makes our lb core a very speedy mobile unit
if it works your onto a winner if not its easy to revert back to plan a
though one good game is certainly not enough to annoint him as a solution thomas did have a good game and i hope it continues and improves

This sounds like an Rectal Exam (Me No Like)...
If replacing J.T. w/George is the best combination, regardless, did we Take A Step Backwards?

probably not, they could both be a step forward. We are just replacing Poz. One of the main players that caused our defense to be last in the league the first 3 games of the season and the guy that gives up multiple pass plays through out the game. Our defense is looking up

Poz played great vs. squealers, browns, and tacks after he settled down and quit trying to do everyone else's job around him. Gus commented on it in two different pressers and it was obvious on the field as well.
The guy is a bit of a dinosaur skill-set-wise and hurt us in coverage early in the season, but he was playing
very good football in the three games before his injury.

I know the facts are old news, but for someone who has not been paying attention, they would be news to him.

Looks like they're exploring life without Poz. If George shows some promise, at the very least, it gives the team some bargaining power in asking Poz to take a fairly significant pay cut. It's a cruel business at times, but it is what it is.
