Quote:I think that stems in large part from the lack of a running attack. When we get in the red zone, and the field is compressed, coverage is a lot easier if the defense isn't worried about our running game.

So why don't we have more rushing touchdowns?

We don't have more rushing touchdowns because we don't have a very good offensive line or running back right now.   They may develop, but right now, they are not very good.

Is that what you were asking?

My point was, Blake Bortles would have more passing TDs if we had a better running game.  The reason is, as we get closer to the opponent's goal line, the defensive backs and linebackers have less field to cover.  Without a good running game, it's easy for the linebackers and defensive backs to drop into coverage without any worry of getting gashed by a running back.  So we wind up settling for field goals.  A quarterback's best friend (well, one of them) is a good running game to threaten the defense and draw them forward so WRs have a lot more space to get open, and sometimes fewer defenders back there.

It's amazing Blake Bortles is doing as well as he is without a running game to help him.   A lot of us (myself included) used to make excuses for Blaine Gabbert, saying it's not fair to judge him without him having a decent supporting cast.  Well Bortles has taken a supporting cast arguably as bad as Gabbert had and he (Bortles) is looking like an all star quarterback.  It's pretty surprising.
Quote:One amazing point I got from that article was that Bortles leads the NFL in 3rd down conversions? Not just leads all rookie QB but the NFL?? Thats pretty damned impressive!

I disagree with the tone of the article underselling our rookie WR, though. I think our 3 rookie WR are good.
This is why Chad Henne needed to be benched dude was a 3 and out waiting to happen, Bortles is playing with the same OL and the same crappy running game, but yet is moving the chains

As bad as Gabberts, no my friend, Bortles supporting cast is worse. MJD lead the league in rushing yards Gabberts rookie year. He was the reason we one five games. If MJD of 2011 was on this years team, we would be a 8-8 possible borserline playoff team between him and Bortles. But thats fantasyland, its too bad tho...
