As a Bears fan suffering because of Mel Tucker's idiocy, can Jaguars fans tell me if he was always terrible or was he just becoming progressively worse as the seasons went on?

He was nothing special here. The Bears can definitely do better than him.

Tucker had one well ranked defense but didn't do much else. Although he never had any talent to work with here either.
Mel Tucker was ok here. Nothing extraordinary. But to be honest, I would take Tucker right now over your former defensive coordinator Babich.
We never really had the talent, but Tucker wasn't that good either.

Don't feel bad though.  We've got Babich as our D-Coordinator now.  We're not too happy with him either.

we called Babich--baboonich

guy was terrible as a DC for the Bears--he was strictly hired by Lovie out of nepotism.  always out-coached and he did have talent to work with

I think that's the only reason he got hired here too!  They were at North Dakota State together.   And our O-coordinator seems to have gotten his job the same way.

Of course I hope they were just the only guys Bradley could convince to come here, and he intends to upgrade the Defensive Coordinator position next year, and the Offensive Coordinator position if our offense continues to falter.

How did Fisch get the job the same way?
Fisch was QB Coach while Bradley was DC in Seattle.  They were both guys that he knew/

For one year. Big deal. Coaches hire guys they have worked with all the time.

So by that definition it was nepotism when Del Rio hired Mike Smith?
He wasnt horrible with what this team had at the time, I do wonder if he would be better with the talent we have now tho, But who knows...

Yes.

Quote:Nepotism has nothing to do with Bradley's coordinator hires. Nepotism is when someone hires a relative. Dictionaries still exist.

Anyway, what can possibly be wrong, in and of itself, with hiring someone with whom you've worked?

Yes, there are still dictionaries.

From the Oxford Dictionary:

Quote:

The practice among those with power or influence of favoring relatives or friends, especially by giving them jobs.

Quote:

The favoring of relatives or personal friends because of their relationship rather than because of their abilities.

There's nothing wrong with hiring friends as long as they're best qualified for the job.  Babich doesn't have a good track record.

Who's to say that Bradley and Fisch were personal friends. They were on the same coaching staff for one season, three years before he was hired here.

Or he considers Babich a mentor within his profession. And someone who shares a similar philosophy. Just because they worked together it doesn't mean they are friends.

I think Tucker would be a good D coordinator if it were 1979.   Alas….. it's not.

Yes. Sometimes nepotism works out. That doesn't change the fact that Mike Smith was [probably] hired mainly because he was JDR's friend.

Quote:Tucker had one well ranked defense but didn't do much else. Although he never had any talent to work with here either.

Tucker had a good defense in 2011 under JDR, and it collapsed when Musgrave took over, although the players were the same.

I wonder how much JDR contributed to the success that year.

You're one to talk....PLEASE take Babich back!!!!!

Well I guess Belichick is guilty of nepotism too. I mean he hired Weis and Crennel mainly because they were his friends right?

I said that about him sucking as Bears DC when we hired him, and the people around here gave me crap. Glad to see an actual Bears fan back up my take.
