Quote:Things werent going well. Your defense had already given up 2 quick scores. Strong likelihood that SD was gonna score when they got the ball to start the second half

Trailing by only 3 at halftime is doing well. So what if we gave up two quick scores? That is much better than trailing by 30 a week earlier.
Quote:Watched the game again, took some notes. Here's what I got:

Other than a few big plays here and there, the defense didnt play all that bad, particularly up front. Lots of tackles for a loss. Branch actually seemed to get a fair amount of pressure at times, and it looked like he may have been held a fair amount. I think it's becoming obvious why Poz has so many tackles: it's because he's never close enough to a receiver to break up a pass :/

Boy, the offense was tough to watch at times. Bortles, Robinson, and Hurns were all bright spots. Joeckel gave up too much pressure again for a top pick tackle. Beadles saved his [BAD WORD REMOVED] on one play by picking up a block that let bortles run free. Idk why we are paying toby so much money to be the third and one guy. Also, if he's gonna be the "third and one guy", why all the qb sneaks, and the draw play to denard? Cecil also shoulda come off the field before that pick. He literally did NOTHING to even impede the defender the slightest bit.

But my biggest beef? Playcalling. In the first half it was good for the most part. However, with a minute to go and one timeout, down 3, we try one throw and then decide to run the clock out, knowing full well that SD got the ball to start the second half. Then in the second half, our script changed. We started playing the short game offensively. I didnt count a single PA bootleg in the second half. Then on a big 3rd and 2 we call a play that has nobody running a route beyond 3 yards (why not spread them out a bit and take what comes free underneath? Dumb.)

It just seemed like we got away from what was working in the first half (a more downfield, PA based attack). I actually came away more frustrated with the 2nd half offensive playcalling than with the defense.

Watched the film on Jaguars.com and that throw from Philips to Floyd in the endzone was a great play by the chargers.  Probably one of Phillips better passes in his career, but you cant give a QB that good that kind of time especially when you are blitzing..
adjustments, adjustments, adjustments....They just aren't there during halftime.  Some if this may be coaching but I believe most of it is just this team is so young at prime positions

So as long as we only lose by a little bit the rest of the season you'll be happy?  Got it.

No I won't be happy. I am just saying it could be worse.
Quote:The last minute of the half was probably them not wanting a turnover and giving SD a chance to score again before the half ended.
I understand what you mean, but if that's what was going through the coach's mind then that is a losing mentality...
Fisch goes full on hands around ankles after the first half, it's nothing new.

Quote:They wouldnt have had enough time to do anything anyway. Had we missed on 2 more passes, they pry only get the ball back with 30 seconds in their own territory

Not enough time? Heck, we had already been burned by 2 long passes for TDs in the quarter, I am pretty sure our coaches knew our great defense was capable of giving up another one real quick.

But they were likely to score to start the second half anyway, effectively ending the game. At that point we needed points to stay in it
I found it inexcusable to run out the clock before half time.

This team needs to develop a winning culture, and you don't get that playing not to lose.

Losing is losing whether it's by 3 points or 30 points. Gus should have had some balls and at least tried to move the ball. We need to dictate what we do instead of letting the other team dictate it.

The coaching staff got scared and reverted back to their shell before half time and never came out of it.  I like Gus, and was happy with the hire, but he has me questioning a lot of things lately.

Like, if they were worried about giving the chargers a short field so much, and wanted to be conservative, why were they going for it on 4th down so much? Some consistency in philosophy would be nice

It was fourth and inches. We had some catching up to do. If we had made the first down every time, you would not complain about it.

So when teams with this mystical "winning culture" let the clock run out at the half even if they're behind, it's okay?

Let's get serious here.  The likelihood of something good happening on that drive was highly unlikely, but there was absolutely the potential for something bad happening by trying to force the ball down the field with less than a minute to go and a rookie QB under center.

You're more than welcome to be outraged that they would perpetuate this "culture" by going with the odds there if it helps keep that anger stoked.  Personally, I think it's wasted energy.  It was the right call in that situation.
We had some catching up to do at the end of the half, and plenty of time to march down and get the field goal. Going for it on 4th is just as, if not more risky

They went for it on 4th and short because they felt they had a situation where they could convert.  On one of the plays, they said it was a mental error by Bortles on the keeper that prevented it from happening.  On the one with Gerhart, it was just a good defensive stand that prevented the conversion.  Is this really rocket science?

We were down by 3 at the half.  Hardly a time to go into panic mode.
And there is such a thing as telling your qb to take care of the ball. But running it twice was conceding

They made the right call.  Throwing a pick 6 in that situation would have had luminaries like you howling from the rafters that they should have just run the clock out.

When your defense was playing that badly, you knew you needed points. Trying to get a field goal with 50 seconds and a timeout isnt rocket science. People have been doing it forever. If the defense inspired any confidence id agree with you. But you knew you needed and had an opportunity to get points, and you passed it up

But they knew San Diego would get the ball first in the third quarter and that could put them down by 10.
