Quote:nearly 10 YPA, TD/INt 1:1, Chunks of yardage, etc. Calm, Collected, and in command. The one thing that stood out was Bortles' ability to sell the run/play action. It was manning level good and fooled the defense three times. Two of them for chunks of run yardage. We saw Bortles throw INTs and then go right back the next series with more shots downfield.
What I really liked however was Jedd Fisch willing to do more tricks with Bortles in there as well as keep taking shots downfield. Was it really henne holding Fisch back? This could get it real interesting.
Bortles might not win alot this year but I am very certain hes gonna make games interesting to watch again. Thats all I ever wanted. A reason to watch.
How he reacted to the mistakes is what I was happy about. He didn't shy away from throwing the ball afterward, which is good. Of course, there was nothing really on the line there, so he can play loose. It'll be interesting to see his progression from here moving forward.
I think Bortles just fits with what Fisch wants to do more completely than Henne does. Having a QB who is mobile, but not a run first guy helps in Fisch's scheme. He wants to move his QB around to set plays up, and Bortles is exceptional at throwing while moving.
Even with throwing two interceptions one that was taken back for a touchdown, Blake still finished the game with an 85 rating.. A game he wasnt supposed to play in and didnt start or play the first half.
His 85 rating is already better than Chad Henne's whom averages 75 thru his career....
Quote:Yep, the guy is naturally aggressive, I love it. He has the arm talent to stretch the field horizontally and vertically, he reads hi to low as opposed low to hi, trust what he sees in rips the ball. Just wait until Jaguars get their run game going, play action is going to be lethal with a guy like Blake.
Blake will get the running game going. He ran for a first down. Toby ran for a first down. I think Denard ran for a first down too. We are going to see a lot more running plays because of Blake.

Actually he was supposed to play. Gus Bradley said afterward the plan was Henne the first half and Bortles the second half.

Blake should certainly help the run game, but I don't believe the run game truly gets fixed until next season.
Quote:Be specific, what plays are you talking about? Everyone was on Dirk Koetter while he was in Jax as well; he turned out to be a pretty good coordinator once he was paired with Matt Ryan. If you truly think Jedd Fisch, a coach that is obviously competent enough to land a job as an offensive coordinator in the NFL is inept; I don't know what to tell you.
I have to agree. Everyone thought Koetter sucked, but I think the lack of QB talent restricted a lot of plays, and how he ran them.

he was asked about his comment earlier in the week saying Chad is his QB period... hilarious...

It's why you see so much equivocation. When you take a stand people take glee in calling you out on it.
I thought his comments on Henne were dumb, but I understand why he made them. This is football, toward the media and the fans everyone is always unified, even if on the inside they're not really feeling it.

Of course, the QB competency determines everything. I don't think drawing up plays at the NFL level is rocket science; everyone runs the same concepts and plays for the most part. The difference is the teams that are good offensively have the QB and elite offensive personnel to execute those plays at a high level.

I've been saying it here over and over again, the QB is the guy that determines if the coaching is good or not.
There have been very few coaches good enough to actually get around having a guy at that position with severe limitations.
I just don't expect miracles from coordinators, we already knew Henne was a terrible gabbert level QB.
If you happen to miraculously get one of those Parcells/Gibbs/Harbaugh level coaches that makes bad QB play seem good then that's great, but for every other coach, they really are just a placeholder, Bortles is the real "coach" of the team now, just like Manning was the real "coach" of the colts and Brady is the real "coach" of the Patriots.

Koetter is the offensive coordinator for the Falcons.... He seems to be doing quite well.

While I comb through every play of this season and the last, I will say for now we has seen the same garbage over and over. 3rd and medium with a screen for a loss, 3rd and short short and letting Gabbne try and convert it through the air, saw a lot of playacting get sniffed out easily last year after failing to establish and sort of run game, even this year with the constant theme of getting Slowby to the edge for a loss, and at the end of the game yesterday trying to run Denard up the gut for no gain/loss (even after he's showed to ability to successfully get to the edge.)
These aren't byproducts of crappy QB play. As far as Koetter is concerned, is their offense really that much better than it was when Mularkey was there, statistically the total yardage and points are roughly the same.

I don't get it. What was funny about his answer?

Yep, and he got run out of town here in Jacksonville.
It's amazing how good a coach can look when he's got Matt Ryan instead of Leftwich and Garrard.

This is a candidate for the best Jaguars Message Board gif ever.
I think he will greatly improve. He threw several passes flat footed yesterday. I think once he gets a little more comfortable it'll be quite entertaining.

Blake can't be the real coach of the team as a rookie. He is still learning how to play in the NFL. But the time will come when he takes on more of a leadershp role and will be allowed to call his own plays.

I mean figuratively.
Gus is the coach, but if Bortles is as good as we think he will be then if the time comes that Bortles and Bradley don't see eye to eye then Bradley will be the guy getting a pink slip, because the QB is much more important than the coach.
I bet fisch is happy to have Bortles in.
