Quote:Going for it successfully didn't mean winning the game though, it only meant a fresh set of downs, still with 70 yards to go.
Going for it unsuccessfully meant game over.
That's the time/field position/timeouts variable. Two minutes on the clock with no timeouts, you have to go for it regardless of position. 5 minutes, you punt and let your defense try to make a stop. 5 minutes from their 25, sure, you go for it because a punt probably wont help you.
I like Gus, but I think it was a terrible coaching call.
You have to take risks if you want to win. At that point a touchdown would have only tied the game. Punt it, and they run down the clock, and maybe get a field goal (or even a TD). They take 4:00+ off the clock, and get a field goal, suddenly you have 2:00 to get two scores. That means more than likely making an onside kick. (FTR Even from their field position, they took 4:00 off the clock, so it's not unreasonable to suppose with worse field position they take off 4:30 and get that field goal. At which point you're left with 1:30 to get two scores)

Agreed. It was a gamble Gus made that was necessary. Young team. The offense was struggling. They had to go for it. Henne rushed the throw and just missed making the play. Even if he had, there was still no guarantee they drive it down the field.
I don't get all of the need to place blame at one player or coach's feet. Seems so childish.
- The defense wasn't able to sustain the QB pressure they applied in the first half.
- The defense tackled very poorly in the second half.
- Henne made more bad throws in the second half.
- Receivers dropped more catchable balls in the second half.
- Jags didn't benefit from as many turnovers in the second half.
- O-line allowed the RBs to be hit in the backfield WAY too many times
----------------------------
These things ^ seem to be where blame is distributed to my eye.
For the "half-time" adjustment crowd: When you have a young, inexperienced roster in need of help at numerous spots, what half time adjustments can be realistically made? They've already dumbed down the scheme to milk what they can out of the roster. They were scheming the game just fine in the first half. They were actually dominating. (with lots of turnover help) What were they supposed to change?? They just needed to hang on and not suddenly suck. They weren't able to do that.
This team played over it's own head in the first half - then crash landed back into reality. (actually a step below reality)

Are you trying to imply it was a team loss? That's sacrilege around here. There needs to be someone held accountable. Teams don't lose games. Individual players do. Bring us someone's head on a stick for this loss! Harrumph!

This guy gets it. Not to mention the defense completely blew a coverage and gave up a easy TD.
No single person "squandered" this game. Everybody gets to share in the blame. Hopefully a good learning experience like Gus mentioned post game.

We looked like a completely different team without cyp in the game
Loosing him meant we moved guy to strong safety which weakened both positions leading to big plays not to mention loosing a leader and big talker on defense
Therefore as we are appointing blame I blame the earth and helmet technology... Yeah
Gus had that stoic but dumbfounded classic Jack Del Rio look about him when the game slipped away.
Scary
good ol Gus......same old results.
This is not what getting better looks like.
Bradley, "I just want them to compete."
1 game in and I'm already tired of competing... I want Bradley to demand "wins" from this team.. if you let them "just compete"... they will "just compete" and never care about winning.... winning is everything in this league. Get with it Gus.... no more going for it in the 4th qtr down a score inside your own 30 yard line with almost 7 minutes remaining... reminds me of JDR
Funny how your first two comments are about Gerhardt (whoever that is) and Lewis instead of Bradley.
Well, after having almost a whole day to calm down, and looking for the silver lining as I always do, we took a very young team on the road against a powerhouse team in their home opener and we beat the hell out of them in the first half. Last year, they would have beat the hell out of us in the first half.
So if you turn your head slightly, squint real hard, hold your tongue just right, swing a dead cat, and ignore a few things that happened in the second half, you can see some positives.

Seems to be some truth in both of these comments.

You can always see some positives when you "ignore some things".
But I do see what you mean.
It must be Bradley! BRADLEY!!! MAKE ADJUSTMENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ADJUST!!!!!!!!
Quote:When the line isn't creating lanes for the running game, this is what you get. When the Eagles are loading up the box and forcing us to throw it, and we've got nothing but rookies out there, it's not good.
Quit making excuses.
Our halftime adjustment is telling the other team what plays we're going to run and how to stop them.

Can't have that. Must continue to show that rah rah, enthusastic, high energy spirit. The players feed off that and it wins games.
We gave up some big plays in the second half because of mental errors. The only real personnel problem was the lack of run blocking.
It's a young, inexperienced team. Watching them grow, if they grow, is going to be painful. Sometimes, very painful.
Quote:Quit making excuses.
You're right. Pointing out the offensive line wasn't helping the running game is just making excuses. Dropped passes are just making excuses. Lousy clock management is just making excuses. Lapses in judgment on the field is just making excuses. Questionable play calling in certain instances is just making excuses.
So, all that being accepted now, is saying Henne made some boneheaded plays just another excuse? I mean, we want to be consistent here, or would you prefer looking like a hypocrite. I'm fine either way. Just let me know which you prefer. If it's an excuse, quit making it because if all of the above is "making excuses" so is singling out Henne.
