Houston Texans sign 2014 #1 overall draft pick to rookie deal almost $23 million dollars. Clowney will also be converted to outside linebacker from defensive end.
Bortles will be signed soon.

What was the contract language regarding his lack of motor?
The one good thing to come from the new CBA is that rookies are slotted, so there's not a lot of discussion required about what the contract is going to look like.

He's gonna play OLB?

Seems like a waste to me.  Hopefully he's not a good scheme fit for them.

^he isn't.

I believe it read something like "fully guaranteed"

The Texans will be in nickel and dime almost 70-80% of the time. Meaning that the defensive alignment will probably be:

LDE: Whitney Mercilus

DT: Louis Nix/Jared Crick

DT: JJ Watt

RDE: Jadeveon Clowney

LB: Brian Cushing

LB: Brooks Reed

CB: Jonathan Joseph

CB: Kareem Jackson

Slot CB: Andre Hal

SS: DJ Swearinger

FS: Chris Clemons
Good. That woukd be smart of them to put watt in a position he doesn't thrive as well in. Classic tinhorn.

Interesting so they really hope he is the next Lawrence Taylor of course Clowney weighs 30lbs more and is 2 inches taller of course they almost had the exact same 40 time.

I think that really ends the comparison because LT was dedicated he wanted nothing more than to win at every aspect of the game, while Clowney they question if he's a Randy Moss type of personallity.

Hold on a second there. In David Halberstrom's "The Education of a Coach" Taylor is painted in quite a different light.

While it's a good idea, I'm not sure that's something you can easily define or quantify.
Clowney is a star in the sight of the Texans so far!

Lol don't worry, Watt will still get plenty of sacks on your man Bortles. I don't blame Bradley for not starting him immediately, probably scared of how much he'd get knocked around against the Texans.

Yep such a waste of talent at 3-4 OLBer

The poor guy's skills will just rot on this team and he'll never ever be put into position to make plays with this defensive scheme.. Rolleyes

So a practice video and two plays where guys comepletely whiffed on him? That's all ya got?

I think the Clowney/Watt duo will be dangerous, but come on man. Let's see it when he gets double teamed and schemed against.

Did you watch the first game..

He was double teamed which is what sprung Watt loose for a sack.  The entire reason why he was drafted was so you can't scheme against the line.  Who are going to double team?  Watt or Clowney.. you can't do both at the same time. It will be a "pick your poison." scenerio

Fact remains though...  Those who tried to act like this guy couldn't make plays within this defensive scheme (Or as a 3-4 backer was being misused) didn't know what the heck they were talking about.  I mean have they been in a coma during DeMarcus Ware's entire HOF career? Clowney was born to attack and rush QBs..  and as a 3-4 Linebacker that is exactly what he'll be asked to do 90% of the time.  I never understood the criticism over him being moved to that position.. it simply didn't make any sense.

Yep, one decent game against arguably the worst tackle in the league makes up for the fact that he looked completely lost the previous week.

After two preseason games?

But lets just ignore the fact that he was a ghost against Arizona outside of the one time they dropped him back into coverage and he got torched deep by a slow TE.

He's playing out of position. The only reason the Texans haven't switched to a 4-3 is because Crennell is historically stubborn, so much that he's nearly ruined every defense he has gone to since he left New England.

I'm not sure where you're getting this "fact remains" thing though, because the opinion on Clowney as a 3-4 OLB is not exclusive to this board, and you can ask anyone here how I felt about Clowney before the draft, thinking Houston would do the logical thing by forcing Crennell to go to a 4-3. I was terrified of that.

Not so much in the 3-4, thankfully.

I'm sorry, stopped reading after  you posted "the fact that he looked completely lost the previous week", because that never happened (the guy played great in that game too)..

"Playing outside linebacker for the first time in his career, it was evident that Clowney was very comfortable rushing the passer. During his brief playing time in the first quarter ,he was consistently in the backfield. On one play when the Cardinals foollishly tried to block him with a tight end, Clowney drilled Cardinals running back Stepfan Taylor for a 5-yard loss.

"The Cardinals' combo of Carson Palmer and backup quarterback Drew Stanton torched the Texans' first-team defense. However, the Clowney-J.J. Watt combo was Houston's one bright spot. The first time Watt lined up next to Clowney on the right side, Watt ended up with a sack. Clowney wans't far behind on the play. Teams trying to man-block the duo are going to find that plan faulty.

"The rookie also performed well against the run, diagnosing plays and driving ferociously to the ball.

Just more wishful thinking on your part and you trying to skew and distort what actually did take place in order to fit your narrative that Clowney will suck as a 3-4 backer and will be ineffective in this defense.. Laughing

The 1st preseason game... guess who drew more double teams.  Hint, the players' name was not Watt.
