Quote:Not saying that Shorts is a "bad"player, or that this group overall is not good, but this WR corps would be better with Blackmon without question.

In the very short time he's been here and not suspended, he's already put up two of the highest single game yardage totals in team history/  That wasn't a fluke. Shorts has been here longer and hasn't been suspended, and he can't come close to claiming that.

That said, the chances of Blackmon ever playing another down for the Jaguars are miniscule.

Exactly.  It's really unfortunate for the team, and for Blackmon that the situation is what it is.
Why doesn't Blackmon outright retire already if his heart is not in it? If he's not returning texts from coaches and teammates, it tells me that he's obviously trying to be away from football. This helps explain why there has been absolutely no progress in terms of him applying for re-instatement.

Another question: are all of Blackmon's suspensions linked to alcohol? The team/league have been pretty quiet on what actually did him in IIRC.

Also, wasn't Blackmon in a car accident in Jacksonville a few weeks before the draft? If he doesn't want to play, why would he be here and not his home state of Oklahoma?

What I'm getting at is that nothing seems to add up with this guy. For all we know, he could have been advised to clear his mind and re-evaluate his career in the NFL. Taking a step back could help him with his alcoholism and help him get on track as a person, then work on himself a player if he chooses.

If you have a player who consistently demonstrates poor judgement, it's almost impossible to tell what his issues are.   He could be an outright addict, or he could just be run of the mill overly immature and disorganized kid.     Once you're in the substance abuse program, you  basically have to be ready to pee in a cup anytime, anywhere, anyplace at a moment's notice.  Not following procedure counts the same as a violation for a failed test.   So who knows if he's been failing tests, or if he just hasn't been following procedures.   If you get busted for DUI, like Blackmon,  you're immediately put into the program and often mandated to pass an immediate drug test.  For players not in the system, the league doesn't test players until the preseason.  The players who knows this party in the offseason and clean up right before training camp (the league only conducts urine samples, hair and blood samples are still a no-no in the CBA).      You could see how an unplanned for drug test in May or June could open up a Pandora's Box of issues.

Quote:If this is some ploy to get the Jags to release him so he can play somewhere else and that they can get a player of Blackmon's caliber for nothing, well, I hope we never release him out of his deal.

He still owes us 2 years service, correct???

Or is it 3 (if you don't count suspended time as years of service)

He can't be released while he's under suspension.
He said this exact same thing on NFL network a couple weeks ago..

Well, now he's said it twice then.
Quote:I think people ignore/don't appreciate the fact that a receiver corp of Lee/Robinson/Shorts/Sanders is still VERY good and if both Robinson and Lee pan out it could be elite in itself, without Blackmon. lol at the guy saying he doesn't care about Shorts and acting like the corps would be in a vastly lower tier without Blackmon. Since when did Shorts become a bad player? If Lee and Robinson can both develop into 1000 yard receivers and Shorts can get 800 or so and Sanders continues to be a good fourth option there wouldn't be any difference if Blackmon were a part of the group, his name would just make it look crazy on paper.
I think it is more that people realize Lee and Robinson haven't played a snap in the league yet and are nothing more than potential at this point.  While water under the bridge, blackmon showed in game that he could play at a high level even with marginal QB talent.
Blackmon has played in 20 games and has been suspended for 12.  If he were to be reinstated before the season, he would likely still be suspended for the first 8 games.  That would be 20 games played and 20 games missed due to suspension.  My opinion is he's done.

He just doesn't want to play football anymore!

sigh....we know this.

I still don't want him merely "released" after any potential re-instatement.

I want him playing NFL football here or nowhere.

The vibe I get from reading some of these posts is some of these people want him released after a re-instatement, and to that I say "dumb", just moronically stupid, impulsive and failure to see the whole picture.

I don't see him being released upon re-reinstatement. "IF and WHEN" he get's reinstated. But, I do see him on double secret probation..

Is it possible that he has a beef with the organization given the draconian contract he signed after his arrest?

What does that have to do with Shorts?

Well he shouldn't. Any well run NFL team would have done the same thing.

You mean the "Draconian Contract" that was set to pay him tens of millions of dollars over a few years?
Draconian contract?  That's funny stuff right there.

I think it really depends on when he gets back, if that happens.  If he misses the entire 2014 season, I think it's highly unlikely we see him ever get back on the field for any team.

If he gets reinstated, it's quite possible Caldwell would opt to release him because the organization has moved on.  It's not dumb if you look at the track record of the player.  Odds that he'll remain clean if/when he comes back are almost non-existent.

I still attest that he will never play 16 games in a season.  Don't forget he had a groin injury as well early in his career.

His issues go far deeper than injuries.  He may not play a single game more in his career.
