Quote:Well I doubt this goes into action but there is a petition in Jax Beach to make a small strip "nude-friendly" - so this might be enticing to you.

I doubt it will be what you think it should be - but hey, you never know...

Also, what kind of research do you take part in? I do some bio-medical research here in Jacksonville and I have been to some national conferences to present for. Last year, I was at New Orleans and the year before that I was in San Francisco - also went down to UF for a statewide conference.
where you at the neuroscience conference in New Orleans? My degree is in psychology but most of my lab experience is in plant genetics and marine biology. i'd prefer to do neuroscience or psychological research though. Know of any job openings for lab techs/assistants?
Quote:Transportation is awesome...if you have your own car. And there are plenty of ladies at the beach! I go by bchbunnie (beach Bunnie) for a reason!
I don't have a car at the moment. Probably gonna be relying on the bus at first but I'd still like to make it to a few jag games.

Pics or it didn't happen!

If you don't have a car, and you plan on relying on buses to get around, don't move to Jacksonville.

is the bus system that bad? I don't plan on being without a car for long.

It's not good.

Jacksonville is the largest city by land mass in the contiguous 48.  It's massive, and it's spread out.  Unless you plan on living on a bus route, and having a job on that same bus route, you're going to be spending a lot of time hoofing it to a bus stop, then going through the multiple transfers required to get from point A to point B.

If you don't have a car or some other form of transportation in Jacksonville, the public transportation is ill equipped to serve your needs.  You're better off buying an old beater of a car that you can rely on to get around town.

I will keep that in mind.

What FBT said is accurate. A coworker of mine who moved to Jax said it took him almost 2 hours just to get from the downtown terminal to his apartment in the southside (which would otherwise only take 20 min by car). Unless you can settle on a part of town that suits all your needs within walking/biking distance, I'd avoid the bus.

Compared to what? For a city of this size, it is below average unless you live within a very specific area. Compared to mass transit in most cities in general it stinks. It's almost impossible to figure out transfers, they need a trip planning tool.

good read. I have experience working with cotton genetics. It's interesting but also kind of boring work.

I remember that from our previous convo

Not to get too Confucius on you but I'll throw out some advice...

Often your first job isn't the the job you want, it's the job that will get you the job you want.

If you can get your foot in the door in anything at all related to the field you want to be in, I'd jump all over it personally. But then again, maybe those fields aren't all that related. Anyway, just something to consider.

For a few jobs at the Jacksonville zoo. I'm fairly flexible and until grad school probably won't do exactly what I want to do.

You have a good outlook then. If you polled some of the older degree holders here, I'd bet not many got our degree in something we actually loved and not many of us made our career in what we actually got our degree in.

Double whammy for me.

. I think a lot of that comes down to not settling. You want somethin you gotta go out and get it. You might fail 20 times but you'll never get where you want to go if you quit. A lot of these jobs are just stepping stones. Now, having said that.. Keep this perspective can be challenging at times.
Any avid bikers here? How are the bike lanes? I used to ride 6 miles a day.

You'll get killed. My mountain bike has been sitting in the garage for years. The only time it comes out is if I'm going to a trail. And I used to ride A LOT before I moved down here.

Not me.   But there are tons of bike riders all around Riverside area.
