This pick was one of my favorites from the draft.  After talking to several friends who are FSU fans, checking out the highlight reels, and then seeing some of the intangibles above, I really liked this pick.  Steal of the draft?  Let's hope so!

The guy tackles.  After watching some of the lousy tackling in 2012, and early on in 2013, this team can use sound tacklers.  Being a leader?  That's a bonus.

That's what I noticed on the highlight reel too, FBT. Lots of open-field, solo tackles. Drives me nuts when defensive guys try to block somebody down rather than tackle him. Smith's highlights are terrific all the way around. I hope he brings those kind of plays to the Jaguars. I'm wait and see on putting faith in him though because of the astonishing stupidity he demonstrated by failing a drug test - Jags have been hurt by that problem too many times to ignore. But while I'm guarded about his maturity and common sense, I'm really excited about his potential.

The one thing that sticks to me is his coverage in the "no mans land" behind the line and under the safeties. He actually roams his zone and looks for WRs/TE and RBs to attack much like a Seattle linebacker. This should create more of the "bang bang" 50/50 defensive tips and big hits on Wrs leading to more fumbles and INts off tipped passes.

I would get so pissed in the JDR/Mularkey days (and even some last year like the San Diego game) when TEs would eat us alive with simple stop routes over the middle as our LBs just stood there waiting on the pass to be throw to try and move.

Telvin Smith is very aware in coverage and shows a sick break on underneath passes. Im saying this now if he starts all 16 as our starting OLB he will end the season with no less than 3 ints and 8 more pass breakups as i expect some Qbs to try and pick on him being a rookie only to find him doing the picking.

Yea he's hard not to like..
Great speed.  Amazing instincts and ball skills.  This kid has one important trait that we are lacking...he is a playmaker!  With him and Cyprien, the defense should have a couple of young vocal leaders who will bring the pain.  The arrow is finally beginning to look up for this team.

Telvin Smith is the one rookie I think starts from Day 1. He can cover Tight Ends, make open field tackles, and play with confidence. Gene Smith wouldn't have made this pick

Obviously since he wouldn't have been on Gene's Big Board..

Imagine that.  Drafting quick athletic athletes that grew up in the Southeast.   And there I was thinking we had to go to Wyoming on Day 3 to get key players for our defense.
Gus lovin some Telvin on 1010XL
He made a good point about drafting philosophy.  You're looking for under valued assets at that point in the draft with weaknesses that can be improved on.   You take a player who might fall in the draft because he doesn't have one particular measurable, in Telvin's case weight,  and you see if you can shore up his weaknesses to make him more like players that we taken highly in the draft.   In Telvin's case, you take a year in a professional style training program and put 10-15 lbs. of good weight on him so he doesn't lose any speed, and you have a 1st-2nd round caliber prospect.

Thanks for this, at the 2 minute mark you can see him miss a tackle and get back up and hustle to make the play.  Awesome pick.
My Favorite Pick, because of style of play, and the value of the pick. Not to mention the attitude and leadership!
at 2:40 he gets the INT and then outruns the WR who was the intended target............

at 2:57 he looks like a TE juking out a defender..........

*Nods head mafia style*

I was stoked when we drafted Telvin.  Hell, I would have been happy if we drafted him in the 3rd, that's how good I think he'll be.

I do think in his first year he'll be more of a special teams demon and situational player in obvious passing situations.

I think he can bulk up to 230 next season and still have the speed, giving him enough power.

Remember, in our defense he would probably be playing right behind a huge guy like Red Bryant ... Smith is just supposed to be able to fly, cover, tackle, blitz etc.

Did you guys see the passion telvin had in the rookie interviews jp and john did today? He has so much energy and that juice for the game!
Much like a lot of FSU fans, I've been watching TS for a while now. Dude's mega vicious. Fits a Bradley defense to a T..
