Taking the time to develop a QB before throwing him to the wolves is the right approach. Financial -and fan - pressures prevent most teams from doing it.

In his article today, Dan Pompei agrees...

http://www.sportsonearth.com/article/749...ke-bortles#

"It is rare for an owner to have the patience to wait for fruit to ripen. It is unusual that a head coach would be on board with passing up the potential of an immediate impact player, like pass rusher Khalil Mack or wide receiver Sammy Watkins. What enables the pick of Bortles is Khan's long-term vision. The organizational stability in Jacksonville, in stark contrast to the organizational instability that awaits Manziel in Cleveland, leads them to Bortles."

You mean to tell me that we just totally wasted the number three pick in the draft on a guy that doesn't have all of the NFL quarterback qualities absolutely expected of him right away?

You do NOT draft a quarterback at number three to develop him.

The talent doesn't match the pick value, find another player that does.

Caldwell has just diluted the value of pick three.

What a terrible job of assets management.

This calls for David Caldwell's resignation. Bradley, too.
things have changed jungle kitty.. These rookies aren't getting paid $60'million anymore and it's really not a big deal if they sit and learn. Even at #3 it dosent mean he has to start right away and your calling for Bradley and Caldwells resignation? Are you dumb?
He hasn't gotten the play book, or taken a practice snap.  I'm not sure how anyone can vote "yes" or "no" at this point.

If there is one consistent theme driven by the leadership of the team, it's competition.  Let him come in and compete.  But he needs to flat out beat Henne to take the job this year, as they've already expressed a desire to let him come into things slowly.  But at the same time, if he shows way better acclimation than expected and is clearly better than Henne, I wouldn't limit him artificially.

Henne now has more weapons. When Henne is good, he's good.  If the addition of a couple more WRs can smooth out his inconsistencies then let Bortles sit and develop.  If we can get by without him playing a snap this season, I'm all for it.

Quote:I'd sit him for half a season, assuming Blackmon is back. I just can't fathom letting the #3 overall pick rot on the bench for a full year.

If Blackmon is out for the year, I'd sit him all year.
he's not rottin he's ripining and learning. Worked out well for Rivers, McNabb, Rodgers.

I feel like Henne will put up some decent numbers and we will improve a good deal from last year.

I agree.
If he's ready and he clearly out plays Chad in training camp and pre season than I say you start him.

If he's not quite there, then you sit him. No need to rush him.
Henne is the starter, but that doesn't mean Blake won't play. Its Henne's job to lose and I bet it doesn't take him long to fold like a camping tent.
Worms and Infiltrates into the national media.  Easy tiger, its football.

You start the guy who the coach believes will give you the best chance of winning the game.  It's that simple.

At any other position, the #3 overall should start and be a significant upgrade on day 1.  QB obviously has a much steeper learning curve, but, if he can't win the job by mid-season, you probably made a mistake taking him that high.

You start him when he's ready...and no one can know when that will be. Could be 2016.  Chad Henne, for the first time with this team, is entering a season already knowing he's the starter, knows the playbook,  has the same HC and OC.  You can't overestimate the importance of continuity and consistency. People forget that Chad was the guy behind center at the end of last season.  I think he could surprise a few people this year ...and Bortles will be all the better for sitting,  watching and learning the system with no pressure.

Guess that's what preseason is for, I sure don't want to turn him into Lame 2.0.

But if he's comfortable, play him.

If he isn't....well I don't really want to go there.

NFL moves way faster than college.
If he outplays henne in preseason, the competition motto should be in effect

All of the indications (scouts, coaches, HC and GM) pointed directly to BB#5. Let him play from day one and grow w/the team. Don't allow the OL to gell w/Henne then switch QBs. If he plays/grows w/the team it'll make for much needed experiences...

Maybe but after he takes an NFL snap.

If he goes into camp and looks ready and clearly out plays Chad, yes.  If he goes in there and the two look even, no.

Henne plays this season. He will be a decent starter but he'll make an even better backup once Bortles is ready.
