Quote:He claims to not play the smokescreen game and just stick to his word, and in the same interview he said Manziel was the most pro ready QB, but then told Blake it "has been him the whole time." Doesn't make any sense.
Being the most ready NFL QB NOW, doesn't mean that he will be the best QB in a few years. Manziel might be more ready to start in the NFL, but Bortles will be a better QB than Manziel in a few years, so when both are in their prime, Bortles will be better. It's another case of preparing for the future..Right now one QB is more ready to start than another QB, but in 3 years, the one who sits a year will be much better for longer
Why do people want the GM to be direct about who he wants to pick? Thats incredibly stupid.

Quote:What?  The draft is a poker match.  He wanted Houston to pick Manziel who will be out of this league in 4  3
years.
He'll be gone quicker than Tebow.  The only difference is we won't have to listen to all the idiots saying "Make him a tight end."
If it's of interest to anyone, you can watch the Patriots trading picks with the Jags here:

It's the second half of the video, the first half is them picking Garoppolo.

Interesting stuff.

Glad teams are letting this stuff be seen.
Quote:Watch his presser where he addresses these comments. It does make sense.

It's clear quite a few have no idea what "smokescreen" actually means.

AGREED WHOLEHEARTEDLY!!!

I don't get it.

This is big business. Its like they don't understand.

This isn't personal interaction with your social circle.

I've never seen or heard him say he doesn't play the smoke screen game, but even if he did, that's exactly the kind of thing someone playing the smoke screen game would say, now isn't it?

What I do remember him saying is that he doesn't like to be dishonest, and he learned that from his parents.  That he would rather just not answer a question, if he cannot do so truthfully, because he doesn't want to lie to you.

Having said that, it seems like you don't understand the differences there.  What he said about Manziel is truthful.  Bortles likely needs to sit a while, and Manziel can probably play earlier.  That doesn't mean Manziel is the guy we want.  If you (or others) chose to interpret it that way, I'd have to say that was the point.  You can smokescreen without lying to anyone.
Didn't want to start a separate thread for this, but saw the link to this on twitter and thought it'd be a good read for anyone thinking Caldwell went back on his word.. His evaluation method to select Bortles gives me complete faith in this pick.

I figured out how Caldwell works already. He's a lot like Gene Smith really. Says best available, but obviously targets certain guys at certain times. The main difference is Gene looked for diamonds in the rough. I expect us to go Pass Rush, DB, TE, RB. As far as DBs go, look for Bailey if we go the safety route. McGill or Desir if we decide to go with a developmental CB behind Alan Ball so early on day 3. Other than going safety there are no more positions that could actually start next season.

EDIT: It just occured to me that nickel corner could be considered a starter also, and LEO and DT may be targets not just pass rush from either.

So when he said "I don't play the smokescreen game," it was a smokescreen.

And that's how it's done.
It's not that hard to understand people, Manziel is the most pro ready but we did care about his readiness.

It would seem so.

No idea.  There is nothing to be gained by transparency with the intentions for our picks, any more than playing chess and telling the opponent exactly what your strategy will be.

*edit*

I'd like to just take a moment and acknowledge perhaps the first, and last, time I've every been able to multi-quote Pirk and TMD agreeing on anything.  Look at us, being agreeable.

I suspect that all you Johnny Football fans are going to be disappointed when he tries to pull some of his cutesie backfield maneuvers and someone like Brian Orakpo bends the corner and smears him all over the field.  He will then be 'NFL ready' on the DL.

I wish there was a crayon font that I could respond in to make sure you understand...  Mods, can this be added?
Quote:just saw the presser. makes more sense now. sorry i let you guys down.

Just read this.  Glad you came to your senses.  I retract my post above, but I'd still like to see a crayon font added.
David Caldwell said Manziel was most pro ready now. Jags are drafting players who are gonna get better and sustain success not a 1 year wonder. Gus Bradley Get Better!

People ran with it and came to the wrong conclusion.
Who cares we got a Franchise QB
