Gruden told all of you that Mack was stiff and un-instinctual.  He's just a guy at a small school that looked better than he is because he was surrounded by scrubs.  The clips I watched he didn't look that impressive.  I'm SO glad the Jaguars didn't go there.

I see Bortles as a potential Pro Bowl QB after a few years. I like the fact that Gus and David said he will not start day 1 and recognize that the best QBs need to be groomed. From other sources, they obviously had a graded draft list and took their top player. Gus and Dave have tied their future to Bortles, and I sincerely hope it pays off. They will either be here in 3 years or be gone.

 

But... I am old school (and just old) and have the expectations that a #3 pick should be able to immediately impact the team. For that reason I would have taken a player who could start day 1, then drafted a QB to groom in round 2 or 3 (I think they are there). I am wondering if the game has changed that much over 40 years and I don't see it.

If you're talking true "old school", then it was very common for all QBs to sit for a year and often 2 years before getting a chance to be "the guy".  So in that case you should look for Blake on the field maybe in 2016.

The pick was such a waste, we got zero value yet again... Barnwell sums it up perfectly.

I was speaking of draft picks at #3 in general. But if your are curious, review the history of QBs drafted in the top 7. Most don't sit 2 years.

You missed the point entirely. You could have pulled off the same thing even if it was Bortles you wanted. But all you got was a QB, unlike the Browns who got a QB, plus 3 more from a Buffalo team that often ends up with top 10 picks. 

 

Sure I hope for the Jags this turns out to be a good pick. But you could have gotten him later with a lot more picks to support him down the road. Cleveland thought outside the box and the Jags didn't.  That's the real bottom line here, not who went where.

If you think a player can be your franchise QB, you take him. It's really that simple.

That's somewhat a self-fulfilling prophecy.  As for most teams selecting that high (most but not all), the cupboard is likely bare at QB already which is why they are there in the first place.

 

Throwing a QB like Aikman to the wolves is not an ideal situation.  It worked for him, but it also took years off the end of his career.  Everything has its price (and benefit.)

We needed a Qb for the future so I cannot hate the pick.  I don't know enough about Bortles to form an opinion of the type of player he can be. Bortles has what you look for in a qb; Size, Toughness,Leadership ability,good arm, and mobility. This guy is built like a lb and ran the 40 under 5 seconds. Why not fast it is not slow by any means.  The guy is athletic.

 

There isn't a GM in the world that can 100% project how a rookie pans out.  I am just going to stay with the wait and see approach.

Unless you have seen the other teams' draft boards, you have no idea if or where we could have dropped down and still gotten Bortles.

 

There really isn't a point you can make when all you have to base it off of is speculation. For all you know Cleveland wanted Bortles at 4 which would mean Caldwell drafted his guy at exactly the right spot.

So, if I find an article that praises the pick, and I can, that cancels out what Barnwell says? And I like Barnwell. 

 

But he doesn't know, and you don't know. He's paid to have an opinion. As for yours, we get what we paid for.

My God there are some awful QB's on that list.

 

There's also a lot of them I don't even remember.

 

There's not many good ones on the 2nd half of any of those lists. Much more top heavy.
