Quote:Yea I don't like the idea of him having to sit and they know that already? Who was the last QB taken this high not expected to be the man for day one?
Carson Palmer : drafted #1 overall,, sat a whole year behind Kitna. Ot actually worked out pretty well for the Bengals. At the time, Palmer was one of the best in the league.
If we sit Bortles for a year and Manziel comes out and does what all of his fans expect him to do, which is play well, then what.  Because he could've sat for a year too and with that sitting Bortles better come out light years ahead of every QB in this draft if we spent that high of a pick on him.  No other team took a QB until Cle. so maybe maybe not.  Time will definitely tell and i pray im wrong because i've been right about the Jags through too many bad drafts and picks panning out badly.

Caldwell already said that Manziel could play in year one. He also said in a backhanded way (and I suppose we now know that this was a backhanded compliment) that Manziel won't improve much between year one and year two. Take that as you will. I'd rather have Bortles riding the pine for a year than Manziel plateauing, assuming that Bortles is a solid pro when he comes off the bench.

Thats true which is why im behind the Blake pick.  I stated before i was a Manziel fan but i am not delusional to the NFL.  Who we pick is the best available player in our minds and as a Jags fan im included in that mindset whether i make the final call or not.  I support Blake and approve his messages but if DC is right then it shouldn't be any concern in the next 2-3 years who the better QB will be without a doubt.  Lets see how this pans out and i really really really hope it does.
He will get playing time when the season is in the stinker. Just to add some flare. From what I gather is Caldwell thought Bortles would be the best pro QB not only in this draft but next year's draft based on this pick. We need a play making WR and the only one left is Marquise Lee.

Quote:Find me the last top 5 QB that didn't start day one he shouldn't need to be developed we drafted him that high to be an impact play someone to build around not develop?

I'm ok with the pick but have real concern if the plan is to sit him for a year

Last year at this time, Dave Caldwell was talking about how important it was to have a RT and LT.  Everyone was sure that Luke would be our RT and Monroe would be our LT.  We all saw what happened there.
I'm looking forward to seeing Bortles in the preseason and I imagine if he does fairly well in at least one of those games he'll get a crack at some playing time late in the regular season as well.

Not fretting about the rook riding pine for awhile.

Didn't realize Jordan Matthews was gone.
He should ride the pine for the entire year.  He may be forced into action due to injury or another 0-8 start.  I think the front office is taking a real long term outlook and knows that we will be in contention for the top overall pick in the 2015 draft.

Best possible situation is to let Chad take the beating while our Offensive LIne is gelling, and while Blackmon is out.

When Blackmon returns, you begin inserting Bortles as the guy.  O-line should play better by then, and he'll have a legit weapon.

Otherwise, just let him sit.

In my personal opinion, if he performs extremely well in the preseason this plan might change.

Here are my issues with this pick:

1. Even the Jags and the talking heads keeps saying he can be a starting quarterback for a decade. There is a difference between a starting quarterback and a Superbowl winning quarterback.  A top 5 QB should be expected to have that ceiling, and I have hear NO one say that about Bortles. They say he has talent and high ceiling. A few people have mentioned maybe like Big Ben but that is it.

2. How often do QB's win a Superbowl after their huge big payday? How many dynasty that have won Super Bowls have QB's who are on their first contract vs their second/third contract. There is a reason for this. It is easier to win when you are paying him nickels and getting back production of dollars. By drafting "your" QB now when this team is years away, you are making that window short or expecting to good faster than expected. Basically you are handcuffing yourself with this move.

3. They keep saying he is their QB for the next decade. So what that basically means is that they did NOT think it would be right to different position now and drafting a QB in 2014 and 2015. In other words, you are not only saying Bortles is better than all the QB prospects in 2014, but also in 2015/2016 when you could have still drafted a QB at the beginning of your competition window. They even said as much in the pressing. Does everyone here think Bortles has higher ceiling/better outlook than every college QB that can come out in the next 2 years?

And the meltdown/butthurt begins.
Quote:Congrats, Jags. 3rd and 4th round picks are who you sit for a year. NOT the third stinking pick in the first round.

Thanks for nothing. See you next May.....

I can only imagine your comments if I had made a post like the above....

Hypocrite.

Now just to address the post. I actually agree with the content.

Its fair to question the worthiness of picking a player in the top 3, when he's clearly a project. Project in this sense meaning not ready to start likely for a year.

I'm willing to give this pick a chance, but can't deny that I had a sinking feeling in my stomach when it was made.

Caldwell is now on the clock after this pick - not meaning any imminent firing or anything, but once a GM picks a QB, his neck is pretty much on the line and his future is tied to that QB's success.

Risky choice, but I guess that also means Caldwell's got some stones...as this could easily blow up.
I think he starts way sooner. Henne sure as hell isn't keeping him off the field. Once Bortles learns the offense Henne is going to the bench.

Also lol.

1. So Bortles is a bust already because no one's come out (that I know of) from the Jaguars organization and said that he alone will win them Super Bowls? A lot goes into winning the big one, not just a QB. Surround the quarterback with enough talent, and even Trent Dilfer can win a title.

2. So the Jaguars are a worse team because they found their QB of the future? Do I have that right?

3. As I discussed in another thread, you don't pass on a QB you love today because you like a couple of QBs eligible for next year's draft. One arrest, one injury, one bad postseason game and that QB that you were willing to bet the farm on a year ago is suddenly Teddy Bridgewater. You're also assuming with this logic that the Jaguars will lose enough games next year to be in position to draft Mariota, or someone else at his level. I don't know of too many GMs who draft this year under the assumption that they'll be in the top three again next season. Not any employed ones, anyway.
