His agent said it was just a diluted sample
Does that mean there was more drug than pee?

Quote:Mettenberger's agents Joe Linta and Seth Katz told FOX Sports that the diluted sample was caused by extra water his client was drinking on the advice of his doctor. Linta said Mettenberger had begun to suffer from cramping while rehabilitating from a torn anterior cruciate ligament. But that's what they all say...

If it's proven you can really fail a test by drinking water, something is a bit wrong though. I know I drink a lot more water than most. Would I fail?

The good news is that this may help push another QB down the draft boards if teams take the failed test seriously.

In the article it states Timmy Jernigan, Telvin Smith, and Christian Jones all failed drug tests. Three FSU players.

In the working world its pretty much understood in most HR departments that a diluted sample usually means that the testee is attempting to flush their system. Most employers will request a 2nd sample from the testee the next day and ask him to not drink any water after 10 pm. If the 2nd sample comes back diluted as well the testee will most likely not be offered the job or will be terminated if already employed there.

Just like Dan Marino.
(queue the "you think Mettenberger = Marino" nonsense, somebody always says it)
Some folks will be happy to hear this if they'd like him to drop, others will reinforce their looking elsewhere.

What is diluted? Like how does that happen?

the urine sample is diluted.
people do it on purpose when they know they have drugs in their system.. they basically overhydrate for a few days by a LOT and dilute their urine.
The standard deviation is very high though, so to get a "diluted sample" it's considered a failed test, because it doesn't just happen by accident.
It would be similar to you drinking 20x as much water as you usually do for a week, for example, knowing that you will have a drug test next week.
It's clearly a sign that the person is hiding something.

So do the jags shy away from these guys not wanting to take a guy who comes into the league with one strike already? Seems we might be gun shy with Drink Drank Drunk already suspended.

If this causes him to drop to the 4th he's the best 2nd qb to draft.
