Yup, I am.  Blackmon sure does get a ton of blown coverages, it's uncanny.

Must be the contact high defenders get when they're in proximity to him.

Now that's good stuff!
This is an unfair question for Blackmon since he hasn't had time to prove it and his off field issues.

Obviously at this point, Jimmy.  A clean/sober Justin Blackmon thats focused would be hard to pass up.

Jimmy easily in his prime. Hope JB gets his head on straight. We are behind him because we know our jags need a big time WR and he seems to fit the hole with how good he can really be when his head is on straight...

Quote:Smith had the one thing that Defenses truly fear and in a quantity that Blackmon doesn't quite have; speed. Smith threatened to take the top off of the Defense on just about every play whereas Blackmon threatens to plow through the Secondary on every play. I am still convinced that in the NFL speed kills. If you have it, teams will fear you. While Blackmon probably has a better skill set at the same point in his career as Smith, he can't touch JImmy's speed.

The way he caught up with Freddy on his 90-yard run against the Dolphins was insane. The man was fast.
I would take a receiver of Gene Smith's choosing from the smallest college in the country over Blackmon right now.  THE GUY IS SUSPENDED - HE CAN'T EVEN COME TO THE STADIUM!  What good is a player who can't play?

I think he has the potential to be better than Smith, but unless he gets a brain transplant it's not happening.

Quote:Blackmon has the potential to be even better, but that doesn't mean he's there yet. Simply put, Jimmy would catch the ball and then find the quickest route to the sideline. Blackmon catches the ball and then looks for the surest route to the end zone.
Wrong.  Smith was a burner.  He beat his corners deep.  McCardell was more of the possession receiver. Smith had that deep rare speed that most corners were scared off.
They are 2 totally different players:

Jimmy Smith was a burner who beat the secondary deep.  Smith burned corners with his speed forcing them to play soft.

Justin Blackmon just overpowers his defender. Blackmon attacks the ball in the air and then runs through defenders. I would love to see a physical battle between Blackmon and Sherman.

Apples to oranges. The one thing I worry with Blackmon is how long he can play like that.  His physical game will put wear on his body.

Fred was running sideways (corner to corner) whereas Jimmy was running straight (center to center)... it appeared that Jimmy was MUCH faster than Fred on that play, but Fred covered more yards so it's tough to compare.

But the point still stands, Jimmy was very fast.  Just don't like that example because one was running diagonally across the field (somewhat) while Jimmy was just running straight ahead, which allowed him to catch up to Fred.
I mean obviously Jimmy proved it over a longer period of time but I think Blackmon potential is to be one of the best in the game.  If he can stay of the drugs...

True but it wasn't that much of a difference. Maybe it isn't the best example, but Freddy was practically running down the hash marks when Jimmy came out of nowhere.

Fredy hits the 50 when he turns at an angle. He goes 20 yards and only moved a couple yards from the sideline to the numbers. My point here is that Jimmy was the only person on that field that could catch Fred, and it wouldn't have been difficult.

Regardless, it was nice to have TWO guys on offense that no one could catch.

I used to enjoy it most when a DB did catch up to Freddy.  It was like a dog chasing a car.  He might catch it, but there was no way he was going to stop it.
Jimmy of course.  Bring back thunder and lightning (Jimmy and Keenan).

Alchohol not drugs.
Justin Blackmon can be a slower, more physical prime Chad Johnson if he pulls his head out of his rear.

That's a really big if.

Granted J-Smooth had the speed, but Blackmon has the moves coupled with the desire to make huge game-winning TD plays. Jimmy was about catching his passes and then getting out of bounds if not already on the sideline. If Blackmon can stay healthy and out of trouble in order to play as long, I'm convinced he'll break many of Jimmy's stats.

Jimmy was certainly among the best downfield run-blockers (as was Kyle Brady).
