Quote:The local idiots labeled him as "captain check down" but Garrard was a decent QB.  He never had a #1 receiver and maybe not even a #2.  In 2007, if it weren't for Dennis Northcutt dropping 2 key balls in the endzone it may have been a superbowl team.

How good do you think the current team could be with a QB of Garrard's stature?  Average is much much better than we have now.

Garrard = Russell Wilson without the #1 defense.
He could do more with Thomas than Bortles ever had.  All the talk about him being a bad deep ball thrower forgets how good he was finding the TE up the seem deep.  He gets a pass for having to throw to Matt Jones, Reggie Williams and so on.   Without the strong running game his teams had I would say he would equal what he did and nothing more.

Quote:Garrard was similiar to Alex Smith. Athletic tough qb with an average arm.

He had a great arm, he just couldn't tame the thing.  The one season he did he went 18:3 td:int
Garrard wouldve won the division. He threw some check downs, but I don't remember as many "what the hell" throws in a season as Blake throws in one game. Dave was tough and didnt have the quality receivers we have now.

Id trade ARob and Lee for the 07 Taylor and MJD

Boselli, Naeole, Linder, Manuwai, Searcy with MJD/Fred in their primes....oof.

Throw 6 yard passes to JT and Lewis.
Garrard would do the same thing with the team Henne would.

Nooooo way. Absolutely not. Taylor and MJD were the reason we got to where we were. North cut, Jones, and Reggie W seemed to suffice, but when it counted they didn't pull through. 2007 Taylor and MJD are one of the best duos in NFL history

Which is why I said I would trade A Rob and Lee for them.  Minus the QBs, give me that 07 Jags offense.
Garrard>>>>>Henne and not even close. Henne would have still sucked even on the exact 2007 roster.

That said Garrard wouldn't have the running game but his WRs would be way better and he actually would hit Thomas on the seam routes. Also the D is arguably better and more talented now. Both Bortles and Garrard had legs so that's a push but Garrard could actually throw catchable spirals and knew how to actually read a defense.

We wouldn't have had so many game killing pic-6s that's for sure and that could account for 2-3 wins alone.

DG had a good running game that he depended and leaned on, doubt he would be successful with this roster, which is pretty obvious and that's why this thread is so dumb.

Not a lot our run game is awful
Garrard had junk to work with after the 2007 season and was limited by a conservative game plan that wanted him to play under wraps. He would easily win nine or ten games with this roster. Most underrated player ever here in Jax and wayyyyy better than Bortles ever dreamed of being which is why this is actually a pretty smart thread.
10-6, division winner or wild card.  However, inconsistent defense would prevent a playoff win.

I'm starting to think it's better to find a serviceable QB in the mid-rounds (like Garrard) then swing for the fences and try and get a 'great' QB with the first pick. First pick QB busts are franchise killers, and you're far more likely to go bust than strike gold. With a first round QB, you've invested so much, you're almost obligated to give them two to three years as a starter. With mid round QB, you've got a little more leeway.

I'm getting there.  Build a great Defense and you're competitive for the long term.

Also, a great OL.
Garrard was the man. 2nd best QB we've ever had here easily. People can complain about him all they want but the dude got the job done with garbage around him almost the entire time.

It's a shame he had back problems and garbage at wide receiver. Dang though Taylor and MJD what a heck of a punch.
