When Blackmon was across from him, a true number 1 receiver..it was much easier for Cecil to do well, hence is he a true number 2 receiver. We know he is not a #1, but he hasn't really had much time with a #1 across from him so he's been drawing the best coverage. He is a mini Victor Cruz to a tee..exact same player. No he is not good with Yards after contact, but he is definitely great at Yards after Catch. He gets injured cause he's not scared and he's a gamer. Getting a concussion to make a catch? Thats the type of #2 you need on your team to win.

People have been doubting Shorts since he got to Jax. He'll prove people wrong...again.

Quote:Go watch his first ever touchdown vs the Chargers and then tell me he doesn't go up and get the ball. Thanks.

He doesn't. He hardly ever challenges a DB for a 50/50 ball.

You're welcome.
Seems like a fair analysis. I think he can be an adequate #2, but it's clear he's not a #1. When he's getting the defense's true attention he can get shut down. Like most good players he can exploit a team that's undisciplined, but he's definitely not a #1.

If the Jaguars weren't seeing what they could get in trade for him last offseason and early in the season from WR hungry teams like the Patriots I'd be surprised.

He just doesn't have the body of a true #1 and he's not great as a possession guy. He's a good WR, but he looks better here than he is because we've been so horrible at the position for so long.

Good player.  If he is Derrick Mason which people have mentioned in this thread, then that would be great.  #22 on the all time receiving list.  Pretty impressive career if you ask me.

Exactly.  Good player.  Consistent.  Not a playmaker.  Very few 100+ yard games.  He'll get you 5 catches for 70 yards every game.

Actually, you have it kind of wrong.

Good player, a playmaker, but not consistent.

He can make big plays, win games, and take it to the house. Too many drops right now, but he is still young. Consistency is where he needs improvement.

I still think he can develop into a very good receiver.

Completely true.
Quote:I think he's a pretty solid 2.

Quote:Solid #2 easily IMO

...I've been saying Shorts is solid #2 for quite awhile, lol

If the Jags plan on letting Shorts walk in free agency next season, perhaps they should dangle him for a trade this draft.

Truth be told, you preferred Dillard to Shorts, who you called "C3PO"...

I think you missed the pun

Mea culpa.  I wouldn't have taken you for someone who buys his shorts at Dillards.
Quote:That was definitely a play.

Shorts is 'aight...

I do think he's replaceable and could be a candidate for trade this offseason, especially given where he stands at his current contract, combined with the depth in this draft at WR, also combined with the fact that I think a player already on this roster (Brown) can replace his role pretty easily.

He's consistently a solid #2 receiver.  He drops the ball on occasion.  He has mediocre hands.  He's very consistent in terms of production.

He rarely MAKES the big play.  He's only the receiving end of it.  Last year he only caught 2 balls thrown over 20 yards - and nobody disputes that he's no terror after the catch.  That's not a playmaker.

To make an analogy.  He's Matt Bonner or Kyle Korver in the NBA.  You run plays to get them open and they'll spot up and bury you.  They aren't stars, however, because they can't create their own shot.  Cecil Shorts is an NBA sharpshooter.

I wouldn't even say he's that good. He's been the beneficiary here of teams not taking anyone on the roster seriously for long stretches as well as being the only viable target much of the time.

I wouldn't say he's capable of burying anyone, just capable of contributing his fair share.

Thanks to the state of the roster aside from him he appears to be very good, but put him on a team like Denver of last year and he would have been the 4th or 5th option.
He's a decent receiver. I don't think the majority of this fanbase views Cecil as a World Beater though. Blackmon fits that mold. He just doesn't have the character (so far) to fully develop and tap into that ability during a full season. With that said, he does have respectable speed, and if he were on a team like PIT, NE, or DEN, he'd probably make more plays. He did beat Joe Haden for a GW TD last year in CLE though. 1-on-1.

1981

his feet and his route running outclass the wrs behind him on the depth chart. what we saw him do to Haden last year, he did to Revis his rookie year (gabbert didn't look his way). he just needs solid qb play.
I will say a major plus for CS3 is that it is clear he takes his job very seriously and I would count on him to continue to improve his craft.

He's the anti-Blackmon. I get the sense that he has a pretty good perspective on just how lucky he is to be where he is.

So true. He's no super special talent - but he is definitely a guy that knows he's just beneath top tier in natural athletic ability - yet he's willing to put the work in to compete with those athletes that were blessed that way.

.

The kid put up really respectable numbers despite some subpar QB play and desperate measures that made him the go to receiver when he shouldn't have been.

I agree, his drive to be as good as he can be is his strongest asset.
