Quote:I had an opportunity to watch the rest of the video. Here's my thoughts on Martin:

2:30 - He gets killed by Nix. This isn't necessarily unexpected as Nix looks to have at least 35 pounds on him, but it did happen.

3:00 - Nice Combo block with his Guard where he climbs to the next level.

4:00 - Chases on a looping DL and gets caught in traffic. It happens, but that's another concern

4:50 - Another nice job of climbing and this time he cuts the LB. Very nice to see him throw in a little diversity with his moves.

6:30 - He seals the backside of the play and did a nice job of being patient and waiting for the LB to show. If he had been overeager, the LB may have run the play down in pursuit.

7:00 - He combo blocked to the LB, but he didn't hold the block. Looks like he was starting to wear a bit at this point. Make no mistake, blocking a LB in space is tough.

7:55 - Nix gets him again.

8:05 - He does not chase the looping DL this time. He can learn in-game from his mistakes. Nice quality to have!

I looked at RIchberg highlights as well, and he looked much worse than Martin to me.

I don't think Richburg is going to have the power that Martin has. Honestly, when I saw Nix lining up across from him, I figured Martin was going to have a long night. He proved me wrong though! Nix got him a few times but that's understandable. Martin held his own against what may be the best Nose Tackle in the NCAA. That speaks well for him.

For some reason, I get the feeling that if Richburg was on that field, he would have needed constant help with Nix. I can't really back that up, it's just a feeling that I have.

Agreed... there were times when Martin was beaten, but not really badly... but he also makes quite a few really good plays.

Watching Richberg I see him doing a solid job but almost never does he impress me.
I dont know if anyone seen this but ill post anyway, here is Richburg against Ala. It looks like he is faster and moves better but dont have the power of Martin like yall said. I wonder if Richburg will be better suited for the ZBS

This is why I like Richburg, the man is darn quick, gets to the 2nd level in a flash and can block in space, perfect for a ZBS.

He could do with getting stronger, but a good NFL weight and nutritional program should do that.

Yeah I have to agree, Richburg is my top C for this team. I hope we can get him in the 3rd
I want Richburg or Swanson hopefully Dave can get one of those guys.

1. Richburg

2. Swanson

3. Martin

So what skillset do you prefer your man at the pivot to have; athleticism and quickness or strength / power? Granted, you'd like for a guy to have both but Mike Webster's only come around so often. To me, I'd rather my Center have power and stoutness and let the Guards be the quick ones. Just my thing though.

In a ZBS, speed wins every time. Back in the days when guards would pull, it made sense for them to have speed, but in a ZBS they all need to be able to get on a defender who might be not be lined up in their gap and that takes quickness. Realistically, you don't even need to be able to drive block down field, just get on a guy, redirect him and let the RB find the hole.

Also, you can't teach speed, he can hit the weights, get stronger, but its unlikely he will ever get significantly faster. If youre going to pick a player with a deficiency (not that I think Richburg is totally lacking in this area), pick strength.

For run blocking yes, and I guess if you're going pure ZBS, which this team is not, you can always just pass out of a play action set where you essentially run block anyway. But nothing kills a QB more than pressure in his face. I get your "can't coach speed" philosophy and I agree completely, but give me a guy who can hold his ground versus the Vince Wilforks of the League. That's a little higher priority to me.

The Jaguars reportedly see Center as the 3rd most important offensive position (I don't get that one) so I'd imagine they'd really really prioritize a guy that has both attributes.

FWIW, give me the quick guy.
