I don't think it changes any thoughts about the first round pick.  This team has too many needs, to alter the 'right' selection to try and counter a Texans draft pick.  There are 14 other games to play besides the Texans.

Quote:this, worst case scenario is Manziel and Clowney go 1 and 2

Worst Case Scenario is Clowney/Watkins go 1 and 2...

The two that teams would seem to trade up for and make the "most immediate" impact for Jacksonville would be gone.

Bingo. And while I'm not normally a Debbie downer, that's pretty much how I see the top of the draft going.

"Yeah, we get to pick third; but the best two players are already gone."

I caught some flack about 3 weeks back basically guaranteeing that Clowney/Watkins will be gone by 3 but the OT depth is too deep to think St. Louis will go OT @ #2.

Our best bet is to hope Texans go QB or take the scheme fit in Mack over the more talented Clowney.

That or hope that Minnesota or some QB needy team wants to jump Cleveland/Oakland and offers us a trade back.

I don't know a lot about the Houston Front Office, but I just can't imagine them taking a one-season wonder Quarterback at #1 overall with Clowney staring them in the face. It just doesn't make a lot of sense. And Mayock's endorsement aside, I don't know that I could justify taking Mack over Clowney.

St. Louis has tried to get themselves a bona fide #1 WR several times in the past and while they really, really need OT help, I don't see them letting their WR walk past them.

To me, the best case scenario is that Bill O'Brien gets all cocky and decides that he wants a QB to fix Houston. He stands on the table in the War Room and screams at Rick Smith until he says "Bortles" into the phone. Oakland puts together a deal with St. Louis to nab Robinson at #2 and then we get the delightful dilemma of choosing between Clowney, Watkins, and Mack. At which point I will find something to complain about no matter who they pick.

"Yeah, Caldwell drafted Clowney. But now Watkins is gonna go play for someone else."
I would def consider one of the OT in the draft or try my best to trade down and gather another #2. With a trade down I would still draft an OT with the first pick and skilled players with my two 2nd round picks, (especially in this draft, QB, WR, TE or LB).

Is there a reason to believe that Pasztor isn't going to a solid starting RT? I don't think its a smoke screen that Caldwell has said that he really likes him.

For real. They just wrote a freaking article on the website about him. I don't think he'll get replaced soon.
You don't alter your draft strategy based on being afraid of a player selected by another team that is silly, you draft the guy that helps your team the most.  That scary player could turn out to be a total bust.

Although I don't necessarily disagree regarding AP, it's not as if David Caldwell is writing articles for the website.
Watkins in round one, Mettenberger in round two.

I wouldn't hate that idea. It's 3 weeks away. Once we are 1 week out, we will basically know who the Texans are drafting and then we can get a better guess for us.

The first 2 picks gone could equal the following:

Clowney and Watkins gone = Mack

Bortles and Watkins = Clowney

Bortles and Clowney = Watkins
I'm not afraid of Clowney on the Texans.

I'm just not afraid of Clowney primarily playing out of the 3-4 period.

This is why I partly believe they won't take him.
Interesting blurb from rotoworld:

Quote:Schefter: Texans unlikely to take QB at No. 1

Jadeveon Clowney | CLG

(April 17, 2014 4:15 PM EDT)

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on NFL LiveThursday that the "prevailing thought around the league" is the Texans will "take a defensive player or look to trade out" at the No. 1 overall pick.

Per Schefter, Houston is unlikely to draft a quarterback first. There have been increased signs the Texans have already settled on South Carolina DE/OLB Jadeveon Clowney, not the least of which was Clowney's decision to end his private-workout schedule on the pre-draft circuit. We suspect the Texans may have already informed Clowney he'll be their pick. Look for Houston to draft Clowney at No. 1 and select a quarterback 33rd overall. Signal callers are going to fall on draft day, quite possibly further than anyone expects.
If Clowney indeed plays up to his potential and is drafted by the Texans we're in trouble.

No we aren't. Did the Giants go undefeated every season with Lawrence Taylor.
"Prevailing thought around the league"

That means he doesnt really know
From the tape and sources, Mack loves football more than Clowney and possibly has more upside as well. I hope whatever the tinhorns do, it ends up being a bad decision in the longrun.

I don't think he has more upside, nor a higher floor, but he would be a good pick at 3 also.
