"The House that Johnny built?" Way to dispel the rumors you put football first instead of your ego. I like so much about this kid, but stuff like this is just dumb. Get drafted, then you can brand yourself all you want. Maybe Mr. Mince can hook you up with his energy drink guy. But to trademark phrases about himself when he should be focused on transitioning to the pros makes people question how committed he is to the craft. He has so much more to lose than to gain at this point. The smart move would have been to sit on these til after the draft if they are vital to maintaining the self image.

I love posts like this.

You think Johnny is staying up all night working on a marketing plan? Yeah, right. He pays people to do that.

This is the American way - maximizing your opportunities to make money.

If Peyton Manning would stop making all those commercials and concentrate on football he might get pretty good.
Sounds like a guy who's fully committed to being the best football player he can be, without the off-field distractions.  Rolleyes

He may not come up with these "brilliant ideas," but he still needs to sign off on them. And as CEO of his brand, he should know the timing on this sucks. Was he really worried someone else was gonna steal this trademark? I wonder if Drake is behind this..

And it's not as if Manning came into the league having accomplished nothing and started with the commercials. He proved himself first.
Yeah this kind of stuff turns me off of wanting Manziel.

What sucks about his timing?

If he doesn't do it now someone else will and he will lose out.

Make as much money as you can, when you can. Its the American way.

I've never understood why people try to connect business and art.

Manziel can have his business people doing all kinds of things - it doesn't change objective reality. He's going to be whatever type of football player he turns out to be. I guess some think that if someone would just bare down more they'd be that much better.

I just take all the off the field stuff as entertainment. Take it with a grain of salt. You can be a good businessman and parent at the same time, as an example. My opinion of Manziel will be based on what he does on the field, not whether he endorses the kind of burger I like.

I do kind of like the whole Johnny Football persona, though. Isn't all this supposed to be fun on some level?
Not a fan of manziel the player but I don't care about this. Get your money.

He is still working his butt off.

I have strong doubts there was a gold rush on getting the trademark for "The House that Johnny Built" Seeing how Johnny hasn't proven or built a damn thing, I also don't see that there is a market for this as yet. The knock on him is that he is too wrapped up in the Hollywood aspect of his fame. A lot of coaches and GMs will look at this as evidence his ego and need for attention could be a distraction. To say you're 100% focused on football at the pro day and to do this days later makes it hard to take him at his word. He doesn't need to 'get that money.' He was born into it. If his ego needs such feeding, he could have easily applied for this trademark after the draft as this surely does not help his draft stock. I like his game and feel it can translate to the next level, but I also only feel this is possible if he gets rid of some of the distractions. I always want a QB who feels he is the best. But the NFL is unforgiving and has a short attention span. This move convinces me less that he has the mental capacity to cash those checks his mouth is writing. He may prove me wrong, but I just don't get why he needed to do this before he was drafted or has even seen what he can actually do on the next level.
Johnny ego being Johnny ego.
I dont really care about trademarks because if he didnt someone else would.  However this is just more to add to the sideshow that is Johnny Manziel.

How long did it take Manziel to go 'ok' and the sign some papers? Less time than it takes to do an NFLN interview or a car commercial.

I hate this 100% attention on football thing. Forget TV and Hollywood, should players not have families? They take focus and time.

Nobody should have 100% of their attention on work. Does he work hard in practice, in the film room, in the weight room and in the locker room? If the answer is yes then as far as I am concerned he is focused on football. What he does outside of football, as long as its within the law is his own business and if that's using his name to make money, more power to him. Nobody ever says guys who do charity work, or who invest in sports bars or who have 10 illegitimate kids by 8 different women in 6 different states are allowing themselves to be distracted from football. Why is what Manziel doing different?

I'm a pretty normal guy from a really small town, and I'd absolutely trademark everything I could.
If he didn't do it then someone else would? Who?  It's just dumb all around.  Yea he was a good player, but what did he do for that team that's so great that he should get The House That Johnny Built?  And it's in insult to Ruth who actually helped his team win championships.  This is just obnoxious.

I like the kid as a player but man he irks me.

Word is Dominos wants to compete with papa johns so they will hire Johnny and give away millions of pizzas

I dont get how giving away your product in mass helps your business.

I'll be the first one to say I don't like Manziel. He's not the guy I want us to draft but if we do I'll support. With that being said I hate when an athlete does something like this and people say "He should be focusing on getting better." So you think because he trademarked a phase he's not working hard to become better? So he's not committed to his craft because he took a whopping 5 secs to trademark a phase? He probably said to his agent hey trademark this and that was it.

Like I said I'm no Manziel fan at all but I'm sick of hearing he's "not committed" cuz he does a commercial or a picture is taken of him at a party.

<div style="font-size:12px;">After MAnziel's first year as starter, Texas A&M's athletic department raked in $120 million in revenue, sixth-highest of any school in the country.
A&M has never been that high in its entire history.

Quote:<div>The university recently retained the services of a renowned sports and sponsorship evaluation company to measure the media exposure generated by the football team’s historic finish and quarterback Johnny Manziel winning the 2012 Heisman Trophy. Research conducted by Joyce Julius & Associates (www.joycejulius.com) shows that the redshirt freshman winning the prestigious trophy produced more than 1.8 million media impressions, which translates into $37 million in media exposure for Texas A&M.

Manziel will see none of that money, never will.
The Aggies football staff, however, did. Head football coach Kevin Sumlin got a $1.1 million per season raise thanks to Manziel's strong rookie season. The rest of the coaching staff was handed an extra $700,000 to share between them.

Quote:<div>Texas A&M University raised a record-breaking $740 million in donations and pledges over the last fiscal year, potentially the most ever raised by a public university, the Bryan Eagle reports.
For comparison, A&M's fundraising haul is over $300 million more than its previous record year, and close to $600 million more than the university raised in 2012.
Officials boast it is the highest amount ever raised by a Texas university.

Quote:<div>Texas A&M Foundation President Ed Davis said the giving was one of the greatest hauls he had seen in his 20 years with the Texas A&M Foundation.
"I think it's noteworthy," Davis said. "Normally, we don't spend a lot of time beating our chest with things like this, but this year has been rather spectacular."
He, too, credited much of the overall fundraising success to Texas A&M football and Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel.

Quote:<div>As for the house he built?...That comes next year as part of the unprecedented $450 million upgrade to A&M's football stadium.
As part of Kyle Field’s renovation, the Aggies will have the largest SEC football stadium when construction is complete in 2015. And, now, they’ll also have the largest scoreboard for any college team in the country.
More importantly, the giant scoreboard will surpass Texas’ by 291 square feet, which is currently the largest in the country.
