Quote:  Hmmm... Get QB or build roster... I'm gonna have to say "Yes" on both counts.

I'm wondering when QBs were excluded from rosters.

The pick a QB just because you need one approach is for fanboys and GMs who run their teams like fanboys.
Look at Idzik's Jets. Geno Smith was the "top" QB available in a dreadful class. He's now competing with a washed-up Michael Vick. I say keep building until you find a QB worth drafting. If not, take flyers on lower-round QBs, like a team would do for a LB, until the right fit comes along. It worked for the Eagles/Nick Foles and the Seahawks/Russell Wilson, and it could work for the Jags.
*sarcasm font*

Stop being scared to draft a QB! The QB fear is real!

Lol not saying they were, but I can't go into a section of this board without it being discussed so I decided to ask the question myself to see why everyone thinks the way they do.
Roster.  Defense specifically.

You need an Elite QB or an Elite Defense.  History proves this to be true.

Quote:We all KNOW who the answer is. He took the Gators to TWO national championships and then the Broncos to the PLAYOFFS. He provides LEADERSHIP on the field and in the locker room. With HIS GUIDANCE, Justin Blackmon can become the man he needs to be. Come one Shad Khan, don't listen to that FOOL David Caldwell. The key to the SUCCESS of your team is waiting for you to have the COURAGE to make the right call.

Just had to do it. B)

Urban Meyer?

1. Do not listen to these people who say take the QB.  The QB gets you the glory but Defense wins championships. In recent History you had Tom Brady who broke the season td mark and peyton manning who also broke the record lose to the superior defense.

2. At #3 the jags should pick their 3rd best player they ranked in the draft.  If we stay at 3 we are guaranteed to get one of the best players.

The last four QB's who broke the Single Season TD passing record - Marino, Manning, Brady, and Manning - did not win the Title in the years they did it. None of them.

Now, that's just a statistic and you can take it as you will but I felt like it needed to be stated.

Miami Dolphins - Wildcat Offense.

I would imagine taking a QB has dominated the discussion because:

1)  It is the position of biggest need;

2)  It is the most important position in football-and also the most polarizing;

3)  There are guys in this draft that have been perceived throughout most of this offseason as potential franchise QBs;

4)  There are other guys later on that may be able to develop into a good QB; and

5)  The team is actually in position to draft one or more of them, possibly one in the top 3.

My perspective has always been if you don't like the particular discussion on a message board, you can introduce any relevant topic you wish.  Nobody is a necessarily a topical prisoner here.

I don't think that anyone who is discussing taking a QB is advocating ignoring the rest of the roster.  Even if the team takes a QB at 3, the team will be in position to address other positions of need later in what is considered by most observers to be a very deep draft.

Conversely, there have been plenty of dominant defenses-1986-1990 Bears, 1986-1992 Eagles, the Dome Patrol Saints, the Schottenheimer era Browns and Chiefs, even the 2004-2006 Jaguars-that never won it all, or for that matter, made it to the Super Bowl.  Arguably, they all failed in large part due to the lack of a franchise QB.

A very valid point as well. The more that I dig into things like this, the more that I conclude that it's really really hard to win Super Bowls. There have been a lot of very good players to never have even gotten to play in one, much less win one. It takes a full roster with strengths across the board and some luck to be able to hoist the Lombardi.

There is only one example of a team with neither of those things and thats last years Ravens. Flacco played elite in the playoffs but is definitely not elite. That defense was very good but definitely not elite either. They just got hot and lucky at the right now.
I know this is a wierd idea but if I was Caldwell I would feel great pressure to draft a QB this year

though I don't know the specifics I would assume Caldwell has said to Khan something along the lines of by 2015 this team will go 8-8

I feel'that is a fair expectation 3 years to turn a franchise from empty to solid but with henne under centre that's a big ask

I understand Khan is patient but say we go 4 and 12 or 5 and 13 next year with the team showing marginal improvement I feel that puts Caldwell on the hotseat and I really wouldn't want to be drafting and trotting out a rookie when on the hotseat

From my perspective I would rather we took.Clowney or Mack over reaching for a qb but Caldwell may not have the time to pass on a qb two years running
Both

Quote:Yeah. And if you want to go really old school Archie Manning
Having watched Archie get put on his bu_ _ errrrrr back many times I will attest if you can't protect your QB your

doing no one a favor. He would joke about how nice it was to see that the maintenance crews had relamped the Superdome.

Exactly.

To put an even finer point on this, consider the 1990s Bills.  They had offense, a franchise QB and defense for days, but never managed to win it all.
The roster has been so bad these last couple years, I'd prefer they build talent and depth everywhere, and not get desperate to draft a qb they don't see as a franchisee calibre qb.

Fortunately, unless we're being lied to, that appears to be Caldwell's plan...  I really hope he finds one soon that can be the guy though.
I think it's a heart vs head thing.

The heart argument...

I would love us to draft an entertainer like Manziel. The great Danny Blanchflower said, "The game is about glory. It’s about doing things in style, with a flourish, about going out and beating the other lot, not waiting for them to die of boredom." Now, he was talking about a different sort of football, but the point stands I think. I want to be entertained.

The head argument...

But I think the reality is that you can get by (and yes, even win the Super Bowl) without one of the top quarterbacks. And a second round selection with the proper coaching to iron out their technical flaws will probably be good enough. Save the number three pick for some other dominant player.

And I think most General Managers these days will go for the "head" argument.
Quote:You take what's available, not what's convenient.  If there's no franchise QB in a given draft class, then you're not going to find him regardless of whether or not you need one.

A lot of franchise quarterbacks have slipped down team boards because GM's thought there were no franchise quarterbacks in a given draft. Identifying a franchise QB is where it is at. The Tom Brady scenario has been worn out, but even the Patriots passed on him five times. The truth of the matter is, you don't know if there is a franchise quarterback in the draft until years later in most cases.
Easily build the roster.   There have been many average qbs that have won it all or least made the playoffs.   And the Chances to find a manning or brady are very slim.     So as long as have the right staff to build a great roster.  Almost any qb will do.  However the exception to the rule is Chad.   He can have all the time in the world and still throw it directly to the defender.
