This is not a Manziel only discussion for those of you who like to read previous post and try and triangulate where someone is coming from or going. I would like to know if you had the chance of getting the so called Special player in a draft or the safe pick that can start and contribute as advertised who would you choose. The reason i came up with this topic is because, i've read countless post about picking the safe player but isn't that what each team tries to do in the draft? It takes a courageous GM to pull the trigger on the guy who's special over the safe player in the hopes of changing a Franchise around. Safe players and "normal" selections in the draft don't win teams superbowls or get them deep in the playoffs while they're rebuilding. Drafting a player to rebuild around is how you do that and even with a top defense in the league like we've had before here in JAX, we didn't go very far without an offensive compliment. What other position than QB is their a dire need for a Special player if your trying to build a championship team. Flacco was regular and he made it to a championship and now he's back to the norm without that staggering defense to help but look at Luck and Peyton and other special QB's that even without a top D can raise a team from the bottom feeder category. Let me know your opinions but keep in mind this is about QB's in my opinion but you can debate other position if you don't have an argument for QB.
I like the special pick. His name is Jadeveon Clowney. I like the safe pick as well. His name is also Jadeveon Clowney. Problem solved.

Last time i checked the internet, his critics said he has a lack of effort and a fall off in play his senior year. That's the most unsafe safe pick i've heard of in memory for a supposed top pick
The safest pick in the draft a couple of years ago was Aaron Curry.
Just food for thought.
Give me the special player. Clowney or Manziel
The safest player in this draft IMO is Jake Matthews

and I remember thinking he wasn't going to be that good as a pro.

were you a Curry fan?
Mack could be this years Curry
Well, at least we know we will get a stud at 3. Clowney, Mack, Watkins, or Manziel. We will get to pick out of at least 2 of the 4.

Curry was never a good pass rusher

Thats true....
but Larry Hart supposedly was.... :whistling:

Ok? Are you comparing Larry Hart to Mack?

lol no. The concept of drafting a linebacker who isn't a pass rusher in the top five makes me shrivel up and die inside. I just enjoy how you like to remind everyone about every time you've ever been right at every chance you get.

According to Gene Smith. There should be a friggin' asterisk behind every player who he gave a good grade to.

It happens a lot, doesn't it?....
As for the other, I think Mack could flop. He does come from a smaller school, and theres no guarantee he makes the leap in the upgrade in competition. Derek Cox wasn't able to, and he was a standout at his position in college.
Special: Clowney or Manziel
Safe: Watkins or Mathews
special: Clown, Manziel, Robinson,
safe: Gilbert, Matthews, Bridgewater

Well who would you choose TMD, one of the safe selections or one of the special players at #3
I think the answer to your questiion depends on the state of a club. Lets use the 49rs for example, they are built to be contenders every year right now so if im their GM I take the special player. The safe guy might be solid, giving you a starter with decent production. Now getting a special player can make others around you better. A guy like Clowney can draw more attention and allow the other side to produce more. Safe wouldnt allow that...
For the Jags taking the Special player is a huge gamble because its really boom or bust. Making the wrong choice could potentially set us back years (see Gabbert). On the flip side taking a safe player may just be another guy. Lets call Teddy the safe guy because he does most things good but isnt an elte QB...SO if Teddy turns out to be a Qb that ranks somewhere between 15-20 what have we really done? Did playing safe help us out at all?
This year we should take the Boom or bust guy, Clowney, Watkins or Manziel...Any of those guys would give us a superstar worth giving extra attention and possibly making others better. I have my concerns with Manziel but I think he would make our offense interesting.
For the OP that said he read that Clowney took plays off and he didnt work hard in his senior year...A, he isnt a senior. B. He still comes off as a very immature kid. C He watched one of his best friends (Marcus Lattimore) get his leg destroyed the prior year and lose millions of dollars. He was certainly a top 15 pick and when his leg was destroyed his career was almost over..Its my opinion that Clowney played scared, that he was scared to get hurt. He didnt go hard, because Im sure many Olinemen chopped his legs from under him on a regular basis. He shouldnt have plyed last year if this was the case. He should of pulled out of school, just sat and trained if he was so scared. While he would have taken heat for not playing, at least it would make more sense than going at 50% and most guys would have respected him for being honest.
I think Clowney has the potential to be one of the scariest players in the league ever, a better version of Peppers. Clowney reminds me of Lawrence Taylor, thats the highest praise a defender in the front 7 could get. IF Clowney matures and focuses on the game, he could have a similar impact. IF he doesnt mature, we will see Jamarcus Russell of the Defense.
Give me Clowney, Watkins and Manziel in that order
