NFL says dunking on goal posts will be a penalty in 2014

The NFL passed a pair of rule proposals at the 2014 NFL owners' meetings but they also managed to outlaw dunking on goal posts, apparently.

NFL VP of Officiating Dean Blandino told the Dan Patrick Show on Tuesday that dunking on the goal post -- or using the goal post or crossbar as a prop -- will be illegal in 2014.

The NFL is just mad at Mark Cuban.  Now they don't want any basketball references in the NFL.

No fun league. This is such a dumb rule.
The reason for the rule change penalizing the dunk over the goal post is because last year Jimmy Graham bent the goal post, causing a lengthy delay in the game while they fixed it.

The reason why this rule is being added is silly.  Issue a delay of game or un-sportsman like penalty and fine the player for damaging the goal post.  A new rule wasn't needed.

Yup. I bet commentators will stop mentioning players' backgrounds in other sports
I have no problem with the rule.

Isnt that what the rule enforces? Now they will throw a flag.
Just smack 'em with a big stick. They won't do it again.
5 hour games is the future of the NFL.  Whatever rules they make they'll somehow translate that to taking forever to run the next play.

A rule change was required for one incident?

Somebody else told me that part of the reason for the new rule is that they are extending the uprights by 5 feet.   That means if the goalposts are moved even slightly out of alignment, the uprights will be way out of alignment because they are going to be so long.

I really don't have any problem with the rule.   There aren't that many cases of guys dunking over the goalposts, so the rule should have a minimum impact on anyone's enjoyment of the game.

Curious that there isn't a rule out there already against damaging equipment or field.

Non issue. Continue your normal day.

There may be, but this rule addresses actions which MIGHT damage equipment.   Under this rule, it doesn't matter if you damage the goal posts or not.   Don't do that dunking thing.   That's the rule.

Or the Vai Sikahema heavy bag thing, that's out too.
dunking the goalpost is so played out.

I would have loved to see MJD try.

I don't see the big deal, this rule doesn't bother me.
Lame
Move along, Jimmy Graham was the only one really that did this and he's already stated he's going to continue doing it, so we can rest easy now.
