Mayock was wrong on Gabbert, but it doesn't mean he doesn't know football. He's actually very professional on his evaluations. I actually like him over tool bags like Casserly, who still stuck in the old school mentality and not even try to accept the changes in NFL evaluation process.
Quote:Mayock was there. He simply could not provide analysis during the game due to family emergency but he was there the entire week of practice making observations so he's got enough from the senior bowl to give thoughts on the prospects.
OK good. I never watched the practices.

A lot of people loved Gabbert. He was projected as the top pick by the Panthers at one point. Everybody was surprised he fell to #10.
Quote:probably because you're not looking hard enough, Hyde might end up being the best RB in the draft, but Mayock is probably the only one that I've seen rank him #1
As for Hyde, he has character red flags?
Jeremy Hill is also a player with red flags.

Carlos Hyde was suspended the first three games last year, but otherwise he has stayed out of trouble.
Quote:Wasn't Mccoy an all pro this year?
Maybe so.
BTW, Mayock graded him slightly above Suh relating to maturity.

Jaguars' woman, you support alleged woman-beaters?

Earlier in the day it was learned that Hyde would not face criminal charges related to an alleged assault at a Columbus night club. Hyde had been accused of assaulting a woman in the club on the night of July 20.
Ohio State's first three games of the season include home games against Buffalo and San Diego State, as well as a road game against Cal. Should Hyde's suspension last longer than three games, Ohio State has a home game against Florida A&M before hosting Wisconsin in late September to open Big Ten play.
Quote:It's hard to overlook that most Big Ten running backs just have not panned out. Guys like Hart, Beanie Wells, Javon Ringer, Shonn Green, Marion Barber, Rashard Mendenhall have been average at best.
I dont think that has anything to do with talent. Most of the B1G rb's were successful in college due to their punishing run style. Looks great in college seeing guys barrel over everyone, but now days it's almost impossible for those guys to stay healthy in the NFL. Which is sad because although im a SEC homer, I reallu like everyone of the backs you listed. Especially Marion the Barbarian
I'd take Mason over Hyde.

They are all throwback runners. The guys to come out of Alabama (Ingram, Richardson, Lacy) are the same way. They are not great fits in the modern NFL. I am not sure Hyde is either. I'd take a guy with some wiggle that can catch the ball out of the backfield. Give me Gio Bernard or Lesean McCoy.

I am not saying we should disregard what he did that resulted in a three-game suspension. Of course that matters. I am just saying before that happened and later in the year, he was not a bad guy. Yes, it is something to be concerned about, but nobody should assume that automatically makes him a chronic troublemaker like some other guys. It just means the risk is there that he can be like them.
Ohio State's schedule last year has nothing to do with this topic. I am just talking about the player rankings by Mike Mayock.

So you are saying Eddie Lacy is not a good fit for the NFL after he won the Offensive Rookie of the Year award?

Big deal. Anthony Thomas won Rookie of the Year too.

He did not have to carry the Bears to the playoffs while the starting quarterback was out 7 weeks.

I think the schedule is relative since this is a discussion about how one ranks particular football players.
One will also need to consider weight to height. Hyde is 6' 0" 240 Lbs. Then there's speed. Hyde seems to be in a 4.6 to 4.7 range. That's fullback size and fullback speed, not feature running back.
40 times are dumb but for RB they're even less useful.

Has Mike Mayock ever used a team's schedule to rank players? If he did that, Tre Mason would be his top-ranked running back.
I am looking forward to seeing his 40 time. If he really is that slow (I can't judge absolute speed by watching games) it will be interesting to see how far Mayock drops him.

They are important if a team is thinking about moving a player to a different position. For example, everybody was saying Malcom Jenkins should be a safety in the NFL because he was too slow in his 40 to be a cornerback (in the 4.5 range). He never played safety at Ohio State. But most of the time it is a very useless statistic.
Wow maybe we can get Mason after all. That would be a dream.
