Private workout? Please, nobody ever looks bad in those.

In my opinion, you cannot go into a draft trying to "avoid" someone, it'll only inject doubt into the process and bias your conclusions. Remember, Caldwell and company didn't draft Gabbert. They may have been of the opinion that Gene Smith overdrafted the guy; that's something we don't know. All that they can do is evaluate the players available to them.

 

Rate each player based on who they are, and what they do. What are their bad habits? What are their good habits? If you keep worrying about what is in your past, you may end up missing out on the future.

I believe the thread starter meant identifying the shortcomings of Gabbert that precluded him from realizing the potential of his physical ability.



I also think you're wrong when you say teams shouldn't be trying to avoid things. They definitely should be trying to avoid players that have identifiably undesirable traits.

(1) I disagree. I read:

and took that to mean how to avoid selecting a Quarterback who will be ineffective despite having the necessary tools. When I read that, I remembered that most every bad habit has been overcome by one player or another to the player's success. Height, "happy feet", "chuck and duck", weak arm, etc. That's why I pointed out that you evaluate the talent in front of you, and figure out who is the best fit for your team. It's just my personal philosophy, and it really doesn't have an effect on how the world works but I don't draft scared.

 

 

(2) Every player has undesirable traits, each and every one. There just really isn't a "perfect" player in the draft so why not work within that? My response to this is tied to my response to (1), but you evaluate what is out there. A player's bad traits pushes them down on your board and a player's good traits push them up. Again, that's just how I would do business so I understand if it doesn't jive with everyone's outlook.

Of course you can't avoid a Gabbert if there isn't one. Does anyone know a player in the 2014 draft who is similar to Gabbert?

How do you avoid drafting a Gabbert?  Don't draft crappy football players.  Simple as that.

How do you know who is a crappy football player?

It's pretty simple.  Don't force yourself into a QB pick with the third overall.  If there's a better player on the board, you take him.

Watch the games.  Go back and watch some Gabbert games and ask yourself, is this guy a first round pick.  Or even a 4th rounder for that matter.

If you watch his college games, you get a completely different picture. I always thought he was a misfit because we don't primarily operate from the shotgun.

If you don't pick a quarterback at #3, you will never get a good one because of the huge dropoff in talent after the top three guys. So yes, you do have to force yourself to pick a quarterback at #3.

Regarding Blaine Gabbert, was that really a "forced" pick?  I'm just really curious.  Gabbert was gradually falling down in the draft, and if not for us -- and maybe the Vikings -- there was a good chance he would have slipped down to the second round.  In 2010, we were 8-8, and Garrard was decent; we were not in a desperate need of a QB.  So I'm not sure if Gabbert was a "reach", but rather a "curious" pick since Gene Smith fell in love with his potential and didn't want to risk losing him.

I think you are really incapable of comprehending the fact that Gabbert didn't have that much football talent and instinct to begin with?

But the entire QB class this year is weak. No guarantees at all. Your hatred for Clowney because you think he's "lazy" is just dumb. You don't have to force yourself to do anything. That's how you wind up in the same position we are in right now. Reaching for Alualu, reaching for Reggie Williams and reaching for Anger.

 

You don't have to worry though! If Clowney is there, we are taking him!

He's got the talent. The arm, the legs. He's got it in spades. He just has about the worst pocket presence you'll ever see.

The entire class as a WHOLE is WEAK. The top 3 QBs are not WEAK. After Manziel, Bortles, and Bridgewater there is a gigantic drop off. So if you want a QB, get them in the first. The other QBs are backups.

I don't disagree that there is a significant drop off from the top 3. There definitely is. I actually really like Bridgewater and would love to see him in a Jax uniform.

 

The problem i had was with JW  when she said "If you don't pick a QB #3 this year then you will never get a good QB." and that we have to force ourselves to take a QB at #3 which is outrageous.

 

We shouldn't force ourselves to do anything. If they think Manziel or Teddy or Bortles are franchise QBs then absolutely take them. If they don't, then i hope they don't feel forced to take one and they end up taking Clowney.

JW doesn't know what she is talking about. Of course you SHOULD absolutely NEVER force a QB pick. But where we are at 3, picking any of the top 3 would not be forcing a pick.
