Quote:People have different preferences, which is fine. My father in law likes to watch golf on TV every weekend. I'd rather jump in the pool holding a plugged in toaster.
I find golf miserable. I played one time in my life and I wanted to shoot my foot off. I played in an event to support a local scholarship fund. That was 3 years ago. I have just donated my $75 every year since then and opted not to play. Miserable, absolutely miserable day.

How can you say that I am not phisiticated? I always raise my pinky when I drink out of the good mason jars.
Quote:I can remember back in the 70's hearing how soccer would sweep the nation. It was at the same time that the news agencies and the government was touting metric over the English System of Measurement. Obviously the metric system has yet to gain a foothold in America and soccer is not faring much better. With that said I can't figure out why soccer is being pushed so hard for American citizens to accept. I like what I like and soccer isn't it. Let the fastest guy on a team race down the field at full speed to challenge the goalie one on one and I might give it a chance. This crap of you have to wait for the defenders to be in place is a bunch of hooey! And for the love of heaven, quit telling me I am unsophisticated for not liking this game.
It's not being pushed on anybody. The younger generations have a lot more soccer fans. Average attendance for MLS matches is on par with the NBA and NHL. Some teams draw well over 20k per, Seattle over 40k.
In Jacksonville two years ago, we had 45k people for the US-Scotland match. If the rumors are true and Nigeria plays the US here in June, that attendance record will be shattered.
You don't have to like soccer. But alot of people do, that is why you see it on TV and in the news more.

Per game, the attendance for the MLS was better than the NBA last season. I posted that stat on here a while back.

Was some of that due to ticket prices?

I'd have to think that is a huge factor, no doubt. MLS, like any league getting it's feet underneath them will always have this advantage, (hasn't always worked with soccer in the U.S., plenty of failed leagues).
Quote:Can somebody please explain Soccers popularity too me?
With fans from outside this country or ties to other countries its a pastime, its history, its in their blood.... I.e. they have legit reasons to be soccer fans...
With most American born fans (and its mostly the younger generation), it has more to do with wanna-be's trying to latch on to an identity and trying to be a hipster. They cannot latch on to other already popular sports in America like football/ baseball/ basketball and claim it as "their own" so to speak. Similar to part of the reason young people rejected Boxing and instead gravitated to MMA/ UFC.
...All in my humble opinion of course :whistling:

I don't even know what I just watched..
"Do not scratch your eyes!"
Can't I at least gouge at them a little?

That was cool, but what about the first 96 minutes?
I get why some don't like soccer, I don't get why anyone thinks soccer is being pushed on anyone. Nothing lasts on TV without decent, profitable viewer ratings. More to the point, nothing is being bumped from coverage to make room for soccer.
If you don't like it, nobody is making you watch it.

It's the off season...we have to complain about something!!!

Excuse #1, The Pot I bought last week sucked, so don't tell me to watch Soccer and like it.
Excuse #2, The batteries on my remote died, and now my TV is stuck on the Soccer channel.
Excuse #3, I will complain about anything I want to complain about, stop telling me to not be a complainer.
Excuse #4, The Cookie Monster stole my munchies.

Well, that is a bummer, I have to admit.

yeah, sucks when I have it all figured out don't it? Just tears you up. LOL @ "middle age man". I'm probably younger than you. Americans that have latched on to soccer in recent years are largely poseurs.

Poseurs don't get soccer-specific stadiums built. Nor do poseurs get those stadiums filled with 20,000 fans.
