For a team to be able to compete at a high level on a consistent basis, you need players to perform above, at, or near the spot of the draft they are taken in. Tyson Alualu also comes to mind regarding the Jaguars. He's been an NFL caliber role player for a number of years. But as someone who was taken with pick # 10 back in 2010, MUCH more was expected. The criticism isn't really regarding the player in most cases like his. It's with those responsible for the decision in taking him with pick # 10.

Tackling, I put on the player. By the time you reach the NFL, you should already have that skill.
Admittedly, it's something SORELY lacking in the NFL in general. This is made even worse by the new CBA effectively reducing the amount of contact allowed in Practice.
At the NFL Level, I don't think coaches have the time to spare to teach someone how to tackle. That's a fundamental. If you don't have it, well...
Additionally, it's been something that's been consistent with him his entire career.
All of that said, though... I don't think our coaching staff has done him any favors. They've kind of coddled him from negativity.

Sometimes taking a SS pays off in that same spot, as the Giants are getting very good play from Landon Collins ( who they traded up for ) this season. Yet, considering how desperate some teams are to trade up to the top of Round 2, a strong case can be made that you have a better chance of getting better overall value when trading down from that spot than when staying there.

I would not trade down in Round 2 without third round compensation. We got Allen Robinson by trading up from Round 3. Picking two WRs in the Round 2 worked out well.
If the Giants did not trade up for Landon Collins, would there have been a starter level safety available at their assigned pick number? Apparently they did not think so or believed Collins is very special.

Re-sign him for cheap. He can't demand a ton of money, solid depth. I don't want him going to another team and become all pro. He's shown some flashes, so that's very possible.
