I've spent most of my time looking at the top rated QBs in this draft and havent spent a ton of times looking at the later round guys.  I started watching some clips of this guy and I'm wondering what the deal is.  I know we've got a lot of Teddy fanboys and Bortles homers and Manziel fans on here.  Say what you want about Teddy, the guy looks like a whispy thin WR with a pretty good but not great arm playing QB.  Manziel looks like a midget sprite.  And Bortles at least looks like an NFL QB but almost never throws a ball with some juice on it.  He always looks like he guides the ball.

Well Im looking at some of these Tom Savage highlights and the first thing you notice is the guy looks like an NFL QB.  The dude is big and has a cannon.  And then you start looking at some of his throws.  look at this clip of his TDs at Duke.

obviously these are just highlights but in the 10 minutes ive spent looking at his games, Ive seen more bigtime throws than ive seen in the hours of Teddy, Bortles, and Manziel highlights.  Look at that 4th TD pass.  Not one of those three can make that pass with that velocity.  They just physically cant do it.  Go look at as many Savage clips as you can find.  The dude makes more big time NFL passes than any other QB Ive seen in this draft.

So whats the deal with this guy?  I see he started his career at Rutgers.  Started as a true freshman.  Led them to 9 wins. set the big east record for yards and tds as a true freshman.  i see he got hurt at the beginning of his soph year and never started again.  not sure if his injury forced him out all year or if he got beat out of a job or something else.  then he transfers to arizona and misses a year.  then transfers to pitt and has to miss another year.  so basically he has gone three years without playing.  then starts one season for pittsburgh and takes them to a bowl.  has a pretty good but not great year.  He throws for over 60% comp%.  His TD/INT is good but not great.  It looks like his Oline was awful.  I wonder what he would have looked like if he had stayed at one place and had a little more consistency to his career.

why did he transfer so much?  is he a headcase?  from just a physical standpoint, you could argue he is better than any QB in this draft.  But is he an injury liability?  are people just scared away because he is inexperienced?  He doesnt look uber-athletic, so is he too much of a statue?  does anyone know more of his backstory?

People talking about grabbing David Fales in the 3rd or Aaron Murray in the 4th.  I would take this guy in the mid-rounds over any of them in a heartbeat.  And if talking about potential return on value, I'd rather spend a 4th round pick on this guy than the 3rd overall on Manziel or Bortles.

He had one decent year in his entire college career where he threw 21 TDs and 9 picks, 61% completion rating, and only 7.6 ypa for just over 2900 yards. Not the kind of production you want to see in the final year of a potential NFL QB.

He has a lot of the tools, big body and a huge arm. His accuracy is spot on but only when his feet are set. He reminds me a lot of Gabbs. He has little pocket presence and terrible footwork when he is pressured. I watched him in his first game of the season and at the start I though that he would be a top pick. However, after a few more possessions the other team started to get pressure and he folded. His mechanics did a complete 180. He may be a 6th or 7th rounder. I'd tske him in the 7th but obviously only if we get another QB way earlier. It's frustrating to watch him when he could easily be the best QB of this year, yet as we learned from Gabbert, it all comes down to how you deal with pressure.
Do you know why he transferred around so much? Head case? Primadonna? Just circumstances?

I believe he was beat out of his starting spot. I think due to injury and then due to better QB play from the guy behind him.

It looks like his Oline was awful.

Not in that clip it wasn't. He had all day to throw to guys who were wide open. I could have made a couple of those throws!!

He had some nice zip on the ball though. I'll watch some games.
According to the three articles I could find, he lost his job due to injury and decided to transfer. After sitting out a year he wanted to move back east to be near his family.

If you are looking for a hidden gem of a quarterback, maybe you take a look at Tulsa' Cody Green?

Many fans and NFL scouts laid eyes on Virginia Tech QB Logan Thomas and he's stirring up a lot of interest. Well? Why not Cody Green?

He transfered to Tulsa from Nebraska relating to playing time. He led the Golden Hurricane to a Conference USA title and a Liberty Bowl win over Iowa State in 2012.

Green drew attention. His size (6-4, 247 Lbs.) and quarterback talent are unmistakably that of the prototypical NFL drop-back quarterback. Green was one of the few college quarterbacks that ran a pro-set offense, and appears to thrive under center. He demonstrates poise, awareness, reads, pocket mobility, tactical ability, and has a degree of spontaneous genius. He has frequently demonstrated he has the ability to pull victory from the jaws of defeat.

He has appreciable arm talent. He makes NFL throws in tight spaces, and he has nice touch. He can complete passes on the run, he can scramble to secondary launch points, and has the size and leg power that an NFL passer relies upon to extend plays. Above all, he's a naturally talented quarterback that has some post-season production to his credit.

For what it's worth, entering this season Cody Green even had some folks warming up to his game.

For example, the Steelers' Bleacher Report guy gave some value to Cody Green after he made a good impression in 2012, suggesting at the start of the 2013 season that the Steelers' might consider using a fourth round pick to secure Green in the 2014 NFL draft.

Green sat out the 2011 season after transferring from Nebraska. He was named Honorable Mention All-Conference USA in 2012 and could have a better chance than Jones of winning the No. 2 quarterback spot behind Roethlisberger.

Tulsa lost a number of players early this season, including Keyarris Garrett, Tulsa's most prolific wide receiver and one of Green's key targets. Unless mistaken, Garrett was lost in Tulsa's 30-27 victory over Colorado State.

There's a lot more Tulsa video on you tube where you can evaluate Green.

It should be stated that the last time I was able to see Green play this season he was slapping himself on the sides of his helmet after being benched by Tulsa coach Bill Blankenship. Coach Blankenship pulled Green apparently figuring he was ineffective. The back-up inserted into the game was not able to perform any better than Cody Green.

Details are not knowable, but one thing that was clear was a continuation of the exact same problems that befuddled Cody Green hit his back-up as well. It's possible that responsibility rested on the shoulders of both Tulsa QBs, but It looked a lot like Tulsa was unable to surround either quarterback with much talent.

Green took the shocking replacement move in stride. Other than smacking himself in the earholes, He never threw his helmet or kicked over the juice bucket. While viewing the television coverage, as Cody was benched, it was impossible to not feel a strong sense of disappointment for Green.

There did appear to be some sort of revelation that Green was playing hurt in the news as Tulsa's season went on, but exactly what was happening leading into Blankenship's decision to de-stabilize the quarterback position at Tulsa would have to be determined. The change didn't work out too well, and what actually happened should be checked out as it would be a shame to disregard Green based on a poor season for the entire Tulsa team.

It would be nice to see Cody Green have a NFL Combine invite. I really hope he gets one. Otherwise, I have a Tulsa Pro Day date of March 14th, 2014 to pass along. You can bet their heads are hanging low. When Garrett went down, it was a loss that isn't so easy to fill. Scouts might even get to see NCAA superstar former-walk-on RB Trey Watts.

If you like VT's Logan Thomas or your hidden gem Savage, maybe you might like Cody Green also?

Cody Green is an interesting developmental prospect IMO.  (UDFA material)

I gotta say - watching that clip - the takeaway I had was Col St. RB Kapri Bibbs has got some moves.

Crappy tackling helps.

Watts has some boogie on that third and one 45-yarder late in the fourth. Tough as nails running back. He finished with 152 yards on 22 carries plus another 58 yards on 8 receptions and 37 more all-purpose yards on returns. 152+58+37= 247 total yards.

Colorado State's RBs Bibbs and Nwoke combined gained 180 yds.

And now back to Savage, I guess?

I wouldn't mind bringing him in as an UDFA considering he literally had like a year and a half of play time. I think he would actually be in the convo from that video and how he did his last year at pitt if he would have been in the same place four years.

at the time of his first season at Rutgers, I lived pretty close to the university. I saw savage and thought he was a future sure fire first rounder. Watched all the games. He was throwing to guys like sanu, and I thought well maybe the talent around him is making me think he is better than he is. All the sudden he got injured and was off everyones radar. I definitely think he has huge upside and 5th round range would be a steal.

plus he's got a sweet name.... way better than gabbert or leftwich

Quote:Bibbs didn't have much left to prove at the collegiate level, as he put up PlayStation numbers in 2013: 1,741 rushing yards and 31 rushing touchdowns. He joined Wisconsin's Montee Ball and Oklahoma State's Barry Sanders as the only players to ever rush for 30 TDs in a season. Bibbs had two seasons of eligibility remaining, and he's not likely to receive first-round money, but he is wise to jump to the next level at a time when there isn't much wear on his tires.

Colorado State has a good offensive line. I know of Weston Richburg. It might be a good idea to dissect the line entirely. It does appear they have much to do with Bibbs success. Some of the holes Bibbs gets to run through are big-big.

Bibbs has forward speed. He doesn't run inside well. He runs upright quite a bit. Doesn't appear to have the ability to break through arm tackles, and doesn't hit the hole quick enough. If he has generous speed to the outside it doesn't always show.

He does follow blockers very well. He reads blocks very well. He darts somewhat effectively, but lacks acceleration off the cut, power to run through tacklers, and seems to go down pretty easy with first contact.

Good change of pace back to use later in the game when you want to grind down the clock, but don't want in the game facing a lot of guys in the box.

I'm not sure if you are hitting that perfect balance with your meds - or maybe I'm just crazy enough to start figuring you out - or I need to get my meds right  - but about half of your analysis is somehow starting to make more sense to me.   :teehee:

I kid  - but I am pretty much in line with your Bibbs analysis there.
Probably the coolest last name ever.

Savage was tearing it up. The 2nd and 4th TD pass are legit. Very intrigued.
NO !!!

I watched every Pitt game last year and never once did I think "wow, I wish the Jags had him".

Savage is halfway decent but in no way is someone that would make a difference in the NFL.    Throw him in the bucket with the other 20 average to above average college QBs coming out this year.

Eh, saw Savage live a few times and honestly he has a big arm but I don't think he's gonna last in the NFL.
